I totally agree!! There have been several times I go to donate something that is still perfectly good and start to feel a tinge of guilt- then I remind myself of when I moved out at 18 completely on my own and having to build a kitchen and gather other basic household essentials and even Walmart felt like top dollar. After that I just get excited that it will bless someone else😊

I feel the need to comment regarding the person who had lost their mom and wanted to save everything. Please give yourself grace. Both of my parents passed on within 8 months of each other 3 years ago. My parents were savers and every time I started to go through their things I would run across something that triggered a childhood memory. I cried so much and it took me so long to go through their things. The best advice I can give is to just be gentle with yourself. This is exponentially harder for those of us who are sentimental than any other kind of sentimental stuff I have ever dealt with. When you're going through the possessions of a loved one who has passed there will be no new memories made. And especially if you are an only child or the last of your siblings or possibly estranged from them you probably are the only one who holds those memories. It can be an extremely emotional and difficult experience. Go easy on yourself. You may need to keep more initially than you will once more time has passed. Make peace with it and give yourself permission to not do it perfectly right away Take some time to let your heart heal. It will get easier after more time passes to prioritize what means the most to you. You have my sincere condolences on your loss.

You are so correct. My brother(only sibling) and my parents passed within a short timeframe. I wanted to keep everything because that is all I had left of my childhood and I am very sentimental. Of course I couldn’t keep everything but as time has passed, I have found perfect homes for some of the most precious things I kept, homes where the items were needed and would be loved and appreciated. I gave them away with a grateful heart. Some items have simply been incorporated into my everyday life and now I am ready to let most of the rest of it go so my children , who don’t understand why it is important to me, don’t have to clean it up.

22:25 Dana's answer just blew my mind. We hold our entire homes and psyche hostage because of a fear of having to replace something; how absolutely crazy is that thought process. I would literally pay someone 500 to come in and declutter for me. Now I'm just gonna say I'm paying myself, thus saving $500 that can be used to replace any "mistakes". OR think of it like, I gained my HOME back, there's NOTHing worth regretting for that peace of mind. You just straightened out my very distorted priorities Dana and all, thank you!

@@marilynrafla6628 I was the same. It took a tragedy to shift my mindsets. My sister passed away in 1992 and left me all her valuable gold jewelry. I treasured her jewelry SO much❤️ Our home was burgled in 2009 and all her beautiful and sentimental jewelry was stolen. I grieved it for many, many years but now use that experience to remind me that her memory is ALWAYS with me and not attached to items that were stolen. It’s now how I see items. I keep the sentimental items that I love and fit in whatever “container” I’ve allocated for it….and the rest goes. It takes time though.🥰🥰🥰

Something I learned over time with sentimental items or clutter! A neighbor gave me tons of garden tools I for sure needed but couldn’t afford! My neighbors dad passed away and instead of her keeping all these items she didn’t need… she left them at my door! It made my heart melt. And now every time she stops by or sees my garden she knows I used her dads tools and she is just beyond thrilled about it!! Something I never thought about until it happened … and now I get to lend my tools out to neighbors who need to Barrow something random. It’s now the gift that keeps on giving! And I think my neighbor loves it and I think her dad would be really happy his items live and love on!!! And serve their purpose. Thanks for all you guys do! Community is SO important!

I have gotten rid of things in the past that I have found myself wanting again. But I don't actually regret getting rid of them! I know the freedom that comes from having a home our family can thrive in is more important then having every possible thing you ever might want on hand at every moment. It is very hard to make that decision, especially if you have a limited budget, but don't be afraid! Even if you momentary miss something you no longer have it doesn't have be regret.

Arrrrgggghhhh i can only imagine! I am single living in a house that was clearly too big for me when I bought it, but you know, "I WANT IT BECAUSE IT HAS SO MUCH STORAGE!" Duh. :) Every day I ask myself how can one person have so much "stuff"? Anyway, I started the process of "downsizing" and at first I was excited! Now I"m just stuck! Stuff everywhere and projects I've begun and I just seem to keep shuffling to another corner. I feel like this will take an entire year! How did you keep going!?

@@laronicaconway1230 , we started in February. My husband died in late March, so I lost a lot of time in April to … well … life. My 3 kids and 2 kid lets-in-law helped as much as they could. I finally had everything out of the house in early August. I also got so sick of all the stuff I began donating huge amounts. In the end, there was still so much left I knew I didn’t want, couldn’t store, and was too tired and overwhelmed to find places to give it away that I hired a company that came in and just cleared everything out. They donated as much as they could, recycled as much as they could, and threw out the rest. It was worth every penny I paid just to not have to deal with it myself.

People would be amazed when they would come in and it looked like we had lived there for years. I also ended up decluttering a LOT as we went along and never looked back. Now we are in our “forever” home and everything fits perfectly and we are committed to remaining organized and minimal.

I think the biggest obstacle is if everyone in the family isn't going along with it. It takes a lot of strength and energy to declutter or organize a space and it takes a long time to do this and someone else who it doesn't matter to comes along and puts things wherever and I can't follow people all around all the time putting things back in there right place or people wanting to keep things I want to donate.

I’m looking forward to the all day declutter. I’ve been working on my home since joining in January. Still have a lot to do, but with my stressful full time job there’s not always much time in my week. Going to get some things donated that are already in boxes so I’ll be ready for Saturday 😊

Now I've been organizing our new home using your tips and one of the tips that work for my fam is practicality and easy grab easy put away. Thank you all very much. It's unbelievable how much inventory we can accumulate. I feel I had too much for a bedroom space even after declutering. Thank you all Gid bless. By the way, I'm only getting minimum furniture. 😊

I’ve been practicing minimalism for many years now, and I love this! It’s amazing to me that how much less I can live with. What I would like to hear discussed is making a conscious decision to really try to bring in much less or reuse or reinvent what you already have. We can’t continue to send all our clutter into landfills. I’m really really working on this now!

Sorry, long story. We replaced our son's 6 year old comforter set last Christmas that had euro shams, regular shams, bedskirt, valance, sheets and 2 decorative pillows because it became too young looking for him. It was all in perfect condition, except for a 2" opening on one of the comforter's corner seams. Funny thing, I only know how to sew on a button. The other day I was watching Megan Fox Unlocked and decided- THIS IS IT- I am going to mend the comforter!! I rewinded her 17 minute vlog 4 times and at the end removed the ridiculous looking stitches, attached a note with safety pins that it needed mending in that spot and bagged everything up; Vietnam Vets picked it up yesterday, along with a bag of new cond clothes!!!! What a great feeling!!!!

Thank you so much for the " mom stuff" question especially, my mom passed away a few months ago and I have had a really hard time going through the boxes much less actually getting rid of things. She saved everything, including a lot of my stuff from when I was a kid so with a small house with no storage it had felt like I am throwing my childhood away. I try to say "thank you" to items I have to get rid of and be mindful that they already were loved and "served their purpose " so its okay to let them go to someone else or even throw them away. 😴

I never realized how much “real estate” that I’m giving up for STUFF to rob my beautiful spaces in my home! ! I never really looked at things as stuff I never used. It was more of… I will save this for a rainy day. I will keep this in case I need it. But as time & years go by… you begin drowning in things, waiting for the rainy day, and then end up feeling like you are in the aftermath of a tornado lol because there is just so much clutter of unnecessary things so THANK YOU for these videos! I have been up all night watching you Dana! Your interview on Mel's podcast and now I am here. I have been following several people who I thought would help me but I am more like you. One is a humble aboad.. I love them.. I got lotsof dollar tree ideas that were so cute and cheap.. then they didn't look good in my house and I would get depressed. This has been refreshing because I see that there is hope. My husband does keep stuff out but I can do plenty.. he trashes the kitchen and I trash the living room. We each have a bedroom that we trash and each have a bathroom that I have been painting mine for two months and using his shower, his has vitamins everywhere and mine will stay decent because the make-up and hair happens in my personal bedroom.. our bedroom that we share is okay.. now the house looks horrible, and nobody can come in but I Will say we aren't pigs! Lol. We have pets and we don't have oders or anything.. the beds are clean but the one in my room is covered with stuff . Organized piles.. good, high end skin care and hair care and make-up. I think i can get it all put away. But then the getting my hands on what I want is going to be a hassle. There are over 100 lip products most not opened or swatched, I get anxiety looking at it all and it gave me pleasure to buy it all.. Scentsy has been a biggie too! He gave my a wall in his room because it has two closets and bought me a huge shelf to store it on. Wasn't that sweet of him? Lol. He wont get rid of an ice maker that is broken though! That is the difderence in us. I was married before for 15 years and kept a perfect house, yard, cars, truck, boat we were self employed and I was totally involved.. I was single for eight years and stayed straight then as well. Its strange, i would say it's his fault but he isn't getting a box a day but he drags in a bag a day. Anyway just refreshing to find you and you other girls are so cute and your personalities are infectious but I just found you this and the video hefore this. Subscribed to all three.. I just turned 57 and my husband is 67. We are young for our ages.. him more than me.. but I have less wrinkles! You girls don't have to worry about that so I was surprised that I connected to Dana above the older ladies that I follow. Sorry so long.

I like to just go into a room, or closet and pick out the favorite clothes, items etc and then it’s easier to let go of their rest. When my husband helps we empty a room and then only put into that makes it look like we want it to look, then the other stuff either has a new home or goes away.

I had to learn to be gentle with myself to say it was OK for me to take multiple sweeps through my 5 bedroom home to declutter. My husband passed away, that was a process of it's own. Then I became an empty nester, processing again with the kids taking and/or leaving things in the family home. Then my midlife (urge or divine appointment) came upon me & I decided to move to another state. That took me a year to process down from 1800+ sq. ft. of my own home to move into an 1100 sq. ft. apartment that I would be Sharing with a family member!! My declutter came in waves & waves!!! Mainly because there were 20+ years of family memories! So I am still working the process & it is freeing for sure. God Bless you ladies and I am so blessed to have found your channels!
