In this video, we go over 3 tips/concepts that you can start implementing in your gameplay to increase your FFXIV Healer damage. It is the deeper dive to Lesson 4: Always be Casting.
0:00 Introduction
0:42 Cast While Moving/Slidecasting
2:29 Learn to Weave (part that was updated!!!)
5:29 Learn the Fight
7:47 Blooper
PSA: This is for healers that want to edge out more
damage and already have a handle on their jobs. At the very core of doing good damage is knowing your class abilities and how to use them, so if you're still learning, start there!
Also, remember, play the game for fun. If trying to master these concepts stressed you out, don't worry about it! Everything I go over in this video is just icing on the cake.

I want to bring up something important! In the 7 Lessons Video I talk about how important it is to recognize that it's okay to make mistakes and that when you do make mistakes, you take them in and learn from them to get better. I used a bad example of weaving the first upload of this video and two awesome members of the community let me know in a very respectful way (Thank you @Yarr and @SeifellalAlmacht) When you make mistakes, and someone offers advice, take it in! Learn from it! That's a crucial part of becoming a better healer

As a WHM main that does regular savage content: Don't let that weaving get to you. Weaving on WHM is much MUCH more difficult than the other healers. We don't have that many opportunities. Clipping a Glare here and then is fine. If you can weave, do it, if you can't, not the end of the world.
@EverydayEorzean
@EverydayEorzean 3 жыл бұрын
It is! I think the biggest thing for WHM is learning to maximize your healing efficiency and mastering movement, cause even slide casting is harder on WHMs, it's doable but you don't get nearly the movement a AST does.

Learning slide casting as a caster is paramount. However learning how to weave and learning when raid wide damage hits is very useful on all roles. Tanks have group mitigation skills that they can use. Some DPS have damage mitigation skills as well that can help reduce a good chunk of incoming AoE damage which I'm sure healers can appreciate.

As a sprout, slide casting was something I was doing but not knowing what it means. I've used it on Leves. One of the problems I run into is (and this should tell you how new I am) Aero will cause a GCD before I can pop off a heal or Repose (which I like to do with multiple enemies). Sometimes that screws up my casing rotation.
@EverydayEorzean
@EverydayEorzean 3 жыл бұрын
Ooooh, okay. Even though Aero is an instant cast, it's considered a spell, which means it still procts the GCD. So you still have to wait that 2.5 and can't cast your heal or repose until it's up. Spells like Aero are used to weave in OGCD abilities (Like your Surecast or Lucid Dreaming.) Because those are abilities (not spells), they have their own independent timer. An example of weaving: You could cast aero > Lucid Dreaming > Cure without causing a delay in your GCD.

Huge improvement is macros. I made macros for each damaging spell with , and priority and , and for heals. It saves you a bunch of time. I have tank targeted all the time, I can do damage to it's target or mouse-over to specific enemy and I heal the other party/alliance people also with mouse-over. As AST I also included a Draw spell to my damaging ability macros, so it reminds me to buff my party as much as possible without keeping an eye on the CD. You can also combine spells like Ascend with Essential Dignity, because when target is alive, you cast Essential Dignity, but when the target is down it casts Ascend. I noticed FF community hates combined macro and on every forum people advice not to combine spells, but there is a huge BUT people don't consider. I started a Pugilist few days ago and the first thing I did was a macro which casts the basic 3 part combo. I haven't found a single downside to it. Sure, it's boring, but when I get more spells it will be more interesting.

But afaik it doesnt cause any damage reduction, just healing over time and 10% extra healing potency for members in the bubble

Mitigate was a poor choice of words, I was more trying to point out the combination of Asylum and Star being able to heal the party with the need for a cast, therefore mitigating it, but you're totally right! I know this topic is a bit more advanced, but macros can help dpsing too! Like the macro I use on all my healers is one that allows me to target whatever my target is targeting. This means I don't have to worry about picking a target to attack and can just focus on other things. I never have to leave the party list. Small simple macros like this help so much it is crazy.

@@EverydayEorzean its for the spells like stone, malefic, and broil. Basically the macro is /macroicon Stone /action Stone /action Stone This makes it so if I am targeting someone in the party list (normally the tank) whatever foe the tank is targeting my Stone/Glare will automatically target that, but the reason I use both and is so I can manually target too if needed. Mind if I ask why it's better to use Lucid with another instant cast OGCD instead of after like let's say a Glare? Is it so they basically can be used at the same time and you can go back to casting Glare/whatever sooner? Also, I really love your style, hopefully more people will find the channel soon enough :) I'm fairly sure KZbin just dropped it in the "recommended videos" section for me, but glad it did ^^

Yes! It's too reduce pushing your GCD timer So when you cast dia, it is instant, but you're still locked by the GCD timer right? So you have this downtime when you can't cast another spell, so instead of just standing there, you can use an OGCD like lucid and your GCD timer goes without interruption. So now you've cast three things (dia, lucid, glare) in The time span of 2gcd cycles. Glare on the other hand takes the same amount of time to cast as your GCD reset, so you don't have that idle time. So if you used it after glare, you are pushing your GCD timer out because you are going to be momentarily animation locked by lucid. It's small, but it ads up over time. Does that explain it a little better? Also thank you!!!

@Dahras1 3 жыл бұрын
Another thing that's important to mention for the ASTs out there, you can weave about 1 OGCD per second where your GCD is spinning but you aren't casting. For that reason, ASTs, who have a ~1.4s cast time on most of their spells, can weave exactly one ability after each spell. This is super important for AST gameplay, as they're designed to be using the card system OGCDs basically half the time. The other healers don't really have the same short casts except for Esuna, but if you find yourself dispelling, feel free to weave in an OGCD. Personally, I hope Endwalker gives Scholar short casts as well. Considering how OGCD-based they are, it's super annoying that they either have to clip GCDs or use their AoE button to get get good weaving opportunities.
@EverydayEorzean

Never considered using swiftcast to keep uptime during forced movement before - that's pretty neat! Coming from a game where almost everything was instacast, it was definitely a bit of an adjustment to have to stand still and learn to plan my movement more carefully. p.s.: tangential aside, but may I ask what glam you're using? I find too many people focus on slide casting, not understanding that it does NOT help with your real enemy: GCD. Focus on knowing enemy cast bars and moving when you need to, not the instant you see a puddle under you. Ultimately, you are trying to get one more spell in before an attack, so it is best to learn when to dodge than sliding too late to dodge.

Something I'd add is--Communicate with your co healer! If you're out of swiftcast when someone dies, communicate, it makes it easier for both of you to continue actively participating in the fight, while seeing who can pick your party member up off the floor. This also will help on overhealing--If you both know after the third raidwide, you need to drop a bubble, then your co-healer is not gonna do anything unless you communicate otherwise!

One small thing that I noticed: only do swift + glare into a ogcd if you absolutely need to move and don't have any lilies and dia is >4s. You'll be trading a clip for another one in the end. Otherwise, *and this is for whm only* just wait for your natural weave windows to use them. Swiftcast is an ogcd, so (hardclip swift) + glare + lucid is the same as glare + (hardclip lucid). Each clip makes you unable to cast another spell for 0,7s meaning that, on a gcd of 2.39, the first case will be 0,7 + 2,39 = 3,09. The second is 2,39 + 0,7, which is exactly the same but doesn't burn swift. As a general rule too, sometimes clipping your assize (and this is for WHM, of course) is not a bad thing. Most people actually do it from 9 to 11 since there's no need to heal there at all and you don't want to drift your assize too much and weaving it (with regen, for instance) would cause you to be locked for the entirity of a gcd while just clipping it would lock your animations just for 0,7s.

@@EverydayEorzean Well, if we're talking p1... I believe I use my swiftcast on the opener to weave Temperance, then it comes back before the tankbuster, which sometimes I use to weave a medica 2 if I have a sch cohealer (no need to if you're with an ast). Then, after that, there's another usage before icicles, which is when it comes back so you can weave temperance again. The next one will be after the first sets of rocks to weave plenary and use medica 2 (or glare, if you want). Then we have another one for a heal on statues, one for the heals for the second lions. It's mostly used on cooldown since it lines up perfectly with your dias if you don't drift it too much. Always on cooldown, honestly. As a fellow WHM just a few (partially) Job-Specific additions: 1.) The Blood Lily is awesome, BUT it is just (in Single Target Fights) a mere compensation in order to compensate for lost DPS GCDs (900 Potency for 4 GCDs => 3 Glares + 1 Heal GCD). If your OGCDs are sufficient for heal and you do not need the additional movement (Slidecasting *wink wink*), then don't use the afflatus skills just for the Blood Lily. Map your healing within a fight in a way that you optimally clear / finish with an empty blood lily. 2.) Mitigation is king => learn the mitigation toolkits of the other roles / jobs and try to optimize the utility in order to enable additional GLARE-Time 3.) TALK with your co-healer and plan together. It will take pressure from you both 4.) ASSISE is a DPS skill. It is not an emergency raidheal 5.) After managing and hopefully master slidecasting. Start learning slidecasting under Presence of Mind. Beware, that slidecasting will feel different due to the faster GCD. Changes in Spellspeed as well may need to retrain yourself. 6.) Have fun and blame the DRG ;-)

To DPS with no worry as a healer I maintain regen/shield on team but is that considered overhealing ?
@EverydayEorzean
@EverydayEorzean 2 жыл бұрын
So... yes, but essentially it boils down to efficiency, the content you're playing and what your goal is. Are you casting too much to the point to the point they are becoming detrimental? (ie: loosing a GCD cast on a 'preventative' medica II or succor that is mostly going to waste that could have been a DPS cast?) If I cast medica II on my team but the tank is the only one taking damage, then 7 of those regens are being wasted, same with shields. So now I essentially just spent a GCD for a single regen, and ended up spending 1300mp. Alternatively I could have used that GCD to cast more DPS and used a single target oGCD to heal the tank as needed. If I'm keeping it up an entire fight (let's go with a dungeon fight of about 3 minutes), I'm spending 9 GCDs, and 11,700 MP on what could possibly be a lot of not needed healing. My philosophy with healing is to only heal or shield actual damage. (with the exception of when you're learning a fight and not sure when things are going to happen, but that's a different mindset!) That being said - I'm not going to stress my overheal in a dungeon during a wall2wall pull because the fights don't last long enough for me to be concerned and the stakes aren't as high. At the end of the day, it's all about what you feel comfortable with and then taking steps to improve as you're comfortable. If having the regen and shield on at all times allows your to DPS with confidence, start taking baby steps. Take note of when you can get away with just shielding or regening the tank as opposed to the team. Then take note of when you could have maybe just used a lustrate/tetra/essential d. to heal them as needed. Instead of a constant shield/regen. I hope this helps! If I missed the mark with my explanation I might have misunderstood what you meant. Let me know!
@CeeJay322

@@EverydayEorzean I know that spamming medica 2 is not a thing xD but let’s say that the whole team took damage on a tank buster : I used to heal until everyone is 100% HP then DPS (when i was a sprout). But you’re saying that it’s better to medica 2 or diurnal helios (if not too much damages) and then DPS the boss to be more effective ?
@EverydayEorzean
@EverydayEorzean 2 жыл бұрын
@@CeeJay322 It's situational, if you look at around 4:39 you'll notice the team took a ton of damage. This is the opening raid wide to E12s. I put down Asylum to add a regen and increased healing received and the AST put down Earthly Star and timed it to explode right after the damage went out, healing everyone to full. Neither of us lost a step in our DPSing during the opening. If you know the fight and you can plan your oGCD abilities around healing it , I would do that over a cast., but I could have also cast Medica II and let the regen take it's course assuming there is the time to do so (I cant remember how much time is between that hit and the next bit one). I could have dpse'd fine because at that point directly after, the DPS were not in any additional danger. I think over time and as you become more and more experienced, it becomes less and less about your team being 'full' and more about if they will survive. That's not to say leave them dangerously low at all times lol, but if there is no immediate need to heal them to full to survive an upcoming attack, then casting a single medica II/aspected helios or better yet waiting until your Assize or Celestial Opposition is off cooldown and able to be weaved in, is just as good if not better!

I have healed in WoW, and now FF14 in the end content raiding mythic/savage and I have never had any guild ask me to dps while healing. Instead they usually end up asking the other healer to focus more on healing and less on dps. If there was no healing needed they preferred us to sit on our mana just in case a accident happened so we could react properly. Its never caused us any issues with dps checks ect. So I honestly think that healing doing dps is a optional thing, and not a must. Then again I have always had people requesting me to heal as I usually do enough healing to where the other healer isn't always needed. In WoW I am usually able to do enough healing to do the job of 2 healers, which in return allows the group to get 1 more dps. In FF14 I actually had a healer get onto me about doing too much healing because I reacted too fast and shielded too many people making it where he felt useless because no one needed healing and when they did I healed them so fast he didn't get anything out. @@naheo yes i know, but when i did savage's even in progression they always asked me to focus on healing and not to worry about dps. They trusted me to keep them alive, and in return I trusted them to be able to do enough dps. Which they did, we never had any issues with dps, and only had minor issues when someone messed up mechanics and i needed to heal them up. Plus everyone in the guild play for fun, so we never forced anyone to play a certain style. A lot of us played WoW so we know just how toxic expecting and demanding people to do things can get, and we wanted to avoid that and have fun. So they loved to dps, and preferred me to focus healing which I don't mind as it was a common thing in mythic raids in WoW as well we all had fun and no issues. Then again everyone in my guild always made sure they were geared properly, had proper food, and gems. They all knew what to do and did their best to do the best they could. They are a good group and could afford to not have healers dps. But i am highly aware of the fact that there are several groups out there that do need their healer to do dps while healing, and there isn't anything wrong with it. But i honestly do think that healers shouldn't feel like they have to dps. I have met players that were good healers and the only reason they quit playing was because people kept demanding them to help dps, even if the healer didn't want to. A lot of healers i know play healer because they like to heal, and don't like the dps role so its wrong to ask/demand them to dps if they don't want to.

My own top tips (from a chronic jaded long term healer of 10+ years) 1: dps, meters, and logs are all bs. The moment you stop caring about them is the moment you can actually improve. 2: healing is about feel. 3: if you can get a clear then that's all that really matters. 4: you can't and will never be able to heal stupid. If the face rolling summoner wants to eat boss cleaves or stand in aoe puddles, let them. 5: in the end do yourself a favor and discover the joy of either tanking or a dps too. Taking a break from a job type that really has lost all sense of worth is a good idea. My hot take : healing in FF14 has been gutted and boiled down to mindless filler noise. It's an unsatisfying mess that has devolved into hurr durr green dps. If healing is ever going to be fun and engaging again then I think SE needs to redesign healing. In my opinion the healing role needs to become 100% healing and support with no damage output at all. Instead, the healer dps contribution could come from a myriad of buffs and supportive actions they could take. This would also require more intensive healing and higher incoming damage overall (which could easily be achieved with a second, harsher, stat squish - which let's face it is likely going to happen in 7.0 as dps in general is already crazy high, even after the squish now.) Well that's me. Jaded healer signing out.

@@EverydayEorzean why does the gear damage even exist in the game? is there any abilities that attack gear or is it just to annoy the players and give crafers a bit more reason to exist?
