Standing throws are really important for my sport, Highland Games. We call it the Braemar Stone in remembrance of the Battle of Braemar. The English has the castle surrounded and the Scots has no arrows or spears left. So, they broke down an inner wall and threw those stones from the ramparts when the English tried to breach the walls. Since the ramparts are narrow, they could only do standing throws. This obviously wasn’t a distance throw but an accuracy throw. Anyway, not that this is overly relevant, just thought you would like the info. One exercise I do for this is use a standing sled with some weight and see how far I can shove it without moving my feet. Do you think this is a good exercise?
@ThrowsUniversity4 жыл бұрын
We used to use an exercise like that. Certainly not bad. Standing bench presses, throwing even heavier + lighter stones will probably help too! Thank you for the question!

I'm a master's thrower 67 years old. I can't glide anymore. Hip issue. So I do standing throws . All you said is good info. I would just add push presses. For me as fast and heavy as I can go. It has helped me greatly.

Hey Dane, I just watched this, what a great video thanks man! I've learned heaps from your channel! This reminds me of reading when Udo Beyer threw his 22.64 m in the rain putting 21.92 m standing that day, his 295 kg x 5 bounce bench definitely helped lol!

Really fantastic videos. I was inspired by the Olympics this year and joined the shotput team in my local athletics club. Did one session, not too bad. I'm 26, I know its late but I want to be a competitor. I was a weightlifter and rugby player before, not the strongest, bench press is around 160kg (352 pounds), and shoulder press is 110kg (242 pounds) I know its far off from the collegiate level even. But I've changed my entire routine around for shotput, I've started dedicating all my training for it. Did my first throw session, got to around 11-12 metres. We practiced the standing, shuffle and glide only. Think I have a chance to get to a competitive level in the next 3 years?

Excellent advice I can't wait to put into practice ! BTW have you any further advice for throwers that MOVE into the forward facing throw as I do .Cheers Eddie

If you're a 21m thrower, how far should you typically be able to throw off a standing throw? How much extra do the pros get from the full spin/glide over a standing throw?

What time should I strive for with 315 for 5 reps? Or how many seconds per rep?
@ThrowsUniversity4 жыл бұрын
4-5 seconds is a good range to aim for at that weight. That will set you up to drop bombs! If you have any other questions or ideas for topics, we are all ears!

@@ThrowsUniversity Training around injuries or returning to training after injury would be a really good topic to cover. There is a good amount of info on returning to training after injury for powerlifting and weightlifting, but there is very little on how to manage throwing and lifting.

@@ThrowsUniversity I've found I have a problem transferring my speed to the front of the ring, I'm told from the back of the ring to the power position my technique and speed are good but I always have some slow down when I reach to the front Also I'm told I recover too early and not finishing my throw,any tips?
@ThrowsUniversity4 жыл бұрын
@@notbrian6805 Focus on trying to get the left down sooner and as you finish wait til you face the sector before you press the ball. Make sure you are finishing towards the sector with your left foot on the ground as the ball leaves the hand. Hope that helps!

@ThrowsUniversity4 жыл бұрын
@@powerzone7146 That is a really good bench press, but technique and feeling for the throw has a lot do with it. The worlds best can stand throw between 16 and 19 meters
