The word “trend” is the definition of in/out fashion, but nothing dies in fashion as people who wore it before the trend will carry on and people who don’t will be doing so once it comes back on trend. Just wear what you like and you won’t care.

I think generally using TikTok/Instagram as your guide for what’s trending is fundamentally flawed since those platforms are driven by artificial hype and trend cycles produced by brands. What people are wearing on streets and what they like is much different than what influencers are being paid to push on social media

Agreed! I believe I only noticed 3 people wearing 550s in the span of a year and in 3 different cities. If something died then the folks making videos about them never really cared about the shoe or style, they were just following the hype.

The Boston’s will just shift from trendy to classic status like they were in pre-2020. They already had a solid user base before the social media hype which will allow them to remain relevant-just like the Arizona sandals. They’re in contrast to other trends that don’t have decades-long cultural relevancy to sustain them.

You forgot that Converse and Vans are also sneakers that stand the test of time like the Jordan's. My belief is that when something like these silhouettes that just go with everything and basically interact with every person as something 'non-harmful' and normal they usually just appeal to the greater audience of people who just need a shoe to wear.

I find myself to be a very frugal person that wants to indulge in trends all the time. I consume trends like everybody else through social media, and have this gigantic urge to purchase popular items like the NB 550s, birks, etcetera. However, I never let myself buy these things for some reason, yet I still suffer for not swiping my card on it. I am always fighting with myself for being too frugal and not letting myself indulge. Then again trends come and go, so by the time I allow myself to spend money, birks and the NB550s are left in the past.

I love 550s. I got like 2 550s (one that I wear to the gym) and a pair of 650s. Definitely lost its hype due to constant mentions and meh cws being released, but its pretty much evolved to a basic shoe (and that's a good thing for NB, in terms of profit). Its the closest alternative to white AF1s for me.

I feel brushed mohair is part of a wider trend for tactile and textured fabrics - and with all the crochet, cable knits, raffia, linen, borg, boucle, alpaca, casentino wool, faux fur, hairy suede, applique, quilting, embroidery, glitter, embossed leathers, 3D fabrics etc we're still seeing around, I don't think it's going away quite yet. I'm even wondering whether tartan mohair specifically will see a renaissance once we hit winter. EDIT: When something is everywhere, it's easy to call time on the trend and swing to the exact opposite... but the more I think about this, I'm wondering whether 'big texture' could end up being one of those broader themes that sticks around and defines the decade??

I love the NB 550 silhouette. my issue with NB 550s were that the colors were always garishly saturated. Their whites were always optic white and not cream, their blacks always black, not charcoal. I exclusively buy a more muted color palette because my skin tone is muted; my clothes gotta match my skintone, my shoes gotta match my clothes. In the rare occurrence that I found NB 550s which fit the strict softer color scheme of my wardrobe, they were always sold out.

My favorite trend is something by New Balance. Their collaborations with various brands and their fusion of classic designs are spectacular. I just recently purchased a pair of M2002RM (i.e. mules) and I'm quite fond of them because they are comfortable as well. Sure, 550 is already standing on the cliff of the trend, but I have a feeling that other products will continue to be loved in the future. i think regarding the topic of shoes with longevity that there are only so many shoes that have a interesting history to them. A lot of popular shoes these days just don't have the cultural impact of more classic shoes and cant stay around long enough to build one either(although i think it would be neat to hear about more "local Legend" type deals regarding certain shoes)

#pvv I've started knitting/crocheting this past year but fully on board of maximalist colour combos!! Someone describes a lot bold colour combos as dopamine core and I think that's a perfect way to describe it. Like seeing a bright sun yellow, with a deep cerulean blue accented with various pinks just brings me so much joy and makes me feel like a walking grade school art class haha. Also on the mohair, I'm very okay with it falling out of trend in the knitting community, its so pricey for a single ball of mohair so i will say mo-bye to mohair with no regrests

#pvv My favorite "trend" at the moment is men wearing jewelry. On one hand its not really a trend to me as I grew up seeing it all the time ( rappers, athletes, community members, etc) but the full-on embrace of it as the cherry on top of an outfit, I find amazing. Counter question, who you got in the playoffs Drew, who's making the finals and who's taking it all?

Truth be told I think that when we truly embrace our own style does it matter what’s in trend. I wear the same style and comfort clothes I’ve been wearing for over 10 plus years. Regardless if people like it our not I love it. Shouldn’t that simply be enough, where fashion + comfort + functionality reaches into our daily routine. To me that’s the quintessential fashion goal.

From a marketing standpoint. The only reason why these each of these trends die was because supply met demand. Keep things limited & the longevity of a trend increases. When ald started restocking everything the shoe became less in demand. People want to deny that increasing supply wont kill a trend bc theyll be able to finally get them but at the end of 2 months that new shoe is in the corner of a room and theyre moving on to the next limited shoe . I can explain why tiktokification also adds to increase a false sense of supply which reduces demand. Most long lasting trends like jordans, yeezys, and now some nbs have been bc they all have limited models that will stay relevant because people look them up but cant access them
@shoki5271

To respond to your question about why certain sneakers fall off so quickly while others like the Jordan 1 and 4 stay relevant, I think it comes down to which sneakers the sneakers community actually supports and think are cool. The New Balance 550s seem like more of a mainstream fashion trend that the casuals (people who don't follow sneakers or fashion all that much) caught on to. The same thing will happen to the Sambas to some degree. They'll have their peak and then decline which will leave true fans or people who play footy as the ones who keep wearing them past their trend peak. At least, that's my opinion, I may be wrong though:P

I think mohair trend start when a lot of hand-made brand specially hand-knitted or crochet made hats and outfits with mohair yarns(example brand is Nong Rak, which specify hand-knitted mohair garments) and mohair is itchy when you wash and take care them wrong, mohair usually need to hand-wash with Shampoo and Hair conditioner or a mild laundry detergent and if you want to iron it, instead steam it.

i think I can answer the Jordan 1 and Jordan 4 timelessness question and rebuttal it with another example. Chucks, Chuck freakin' Taylors man; they've always been in style no matter what. It's a classic silhouette you have other companies constantly trying to copy it (and they do) but nothing comes close to the original Converse. Same thing with the Jordan 1's and 4's they're huge, they have a very distinct silhouette endless color options so the possibilities are endless. The thing about these three shoes is that they're also versatile and tend to end up in a lot of Capsule Wardrobes because you can pretty much match Chucks, 1's and 4's with any outfit, even freakin' suits.

Wool garments are just a pain to deal with to keep clean and with patterns you'd probably have to make sure all the hairs align properly. Also to deal with wool itch, gotta line it with something or wear a shirt under. I assume mohair got popular cuz it gave texture to flatness. Imo it's like a fashion ghille/hunting suit and am waiting for the realtree 3d camo or something to become more mainstream lol.

We live in an age that we believe what is online is our own reality but honestly we shouldn't care. If you've been inspired by an online trend and you like an item, then wear it. If you have an item of clothing that you like, wear it no matter it's current online trend. This is in no way a shot at drew, he's simply made a video about online trends that are dying and he's 100% right with all of them, love the videos.

from someone who doesnt own the birkenstock mule things, living in a tropical country and summer rolling in, socks and the sandals feel a bit hot and sweaty for me/us, maybe back then it was popular cause of fall/winter/spring and back then we were dominantly indoors. walking here with the high chance of rain or puddles, seeing your socks get wet is not a viable option

I also think TikTok and social media has shortened our attention span so much that we quickly get old of certain trends. Also that mohair joke outta pocket bro 😂

dig your content! Mohair was very popular when I was a kid. it peaked about 1967 and I stopped wearing my chartreuse real mohair V-neck. Wow was it warm. but they will come back...

I’m cool headed into the rest of my life wearing athleisure. You can dress it up, dress it down, anything thats synthetic and breathable and stretches. I use to be hella into fashion in the sense of trying new things just to see how you can sauce it. But after a while I realized throwing on layers or cottons and all that heavy and uncomfortable clothing was just not worth it. And athleisure is just way more practicle and clean looking. No I ain’t talking bout a nike techfleece or tracksuits at all. I’m just talkin active oriented clothing. Polyesters, synthetics.

I've wanted the bostons as long as they've been popular, and decided that I have a reason to get them (no sandals, mules or slip-ons but I live by the beach). I decided to wait to get them for cheaper until after the trend was over, and I'm excited now.

I don’t think Birkenstocks are out at all. I think certain styles will be considered less cool due to over saturation. However with Birkenstocks being a major fashion and plot point in Barbie this summer there is and will continue to be a second wave of cultural relevance. Birkenstock has started doing more colored shoes and I think that and platform birks will be the new cool version for the fall.

#pvv I am going through this insane cardigan phase. I really love how you paired your CMIYGL tee with the brown. It really reminded me of how Tyler has been a huge influence in my cardigan craze. My mom never understood why he (Tyler) could be a style icon for me (as a woman) but I always beg her to get the grannies she works with to set up a crocheting/knitting tutorial for me. Cardigans feel like warm hugs honestly. I love the occasional compliment I get whenever I wear one too :)

I agree that the 550 has run its course due to the amount of releases by NB but still love mine and was one of the models that made me switch brands and found a community of NB-heads that are super cool. It will always be a staple in my collection as it marked a notable change in my preferences as a sneaker enthusiast. PS.. the side profile of the shoe still gets me every time.

Ive been watching your videos for a while and i love them! I just wanted to comment on your statements „at least in america when you wear a clean 550 youd still be more fashionable than the great majority of people“ because i think this goes for every other country as well. I feel like people have this image of europeans or asians to be insanely fashionable and stylish but tbh? Most people just dress very average in a sweater and jeans. Yes there are fashion mekkas such as Paris or London but even there most people dress very normal :) ive been to various european cities and thats what ive seen so far (im german myself).

I just crossed the 10 year anniversary on my Berks. I bought them even before the boom and I will wear them till they fall apart. The Boston silhouette feels so timeless that the fact that it even became a “trend” is silly to me. To me it’s be like three piece suits becoming a “trend.”

As someone who grew up with Birks and Sambas since I can remmeber cus my parent's are relatively preppy, it's been so weird to see them out and about in vogue. Same way I felt when I realized both Crocs and Salomon's were back. I literally wore Salomon's in grade school beccause I couldn't stand wearing snow boots. People are truly unoriginal it seems.

2:07 But the quality isn't the same. Birkenstock's midsole have true fully cork inside. Cheaper ones only have a lil layer of cork on the edge. That's why the gap of the price, also made in Germany

the mohair trend i feel has started in the rise of crochet pieces, from crochet tok and a bit of a crocheter the bolero/sleeve trend has gotten a huge uprising for layering outfits and have subversive basics. Mohair is a type of yarn used in creating interesting types of boleros and other crochet items and coming from a third world country trying to find it has been pretty pricy and see little to none at all.

drew i'd love to know your thoughts on the dickies double knee loose fit pants, i just got some because i was inspired by your suggestion of the dickies 874s but wanted to try something a little different. this purchase was the most i've spent on a pair of pants; all of my pants are second hand tho so this is the first pair of new pants i've bought and i'm loving the fact that they fit my waist without a belt, it feels like a real luxury
