When I got my driver's license back in 1993, I got a '68 Buick Wildcat that was 9 years older than I was and it certainly was old then! I managed to keep it 8 years and I needed to subscribe to Hemmings Motor news for spare parts as they were already inexistant in junkyards around here! I still have mid-1960s Buicks but I stopped driving them daily years ago! And now my daily driver (a 1993 a Toyota SR5 pickup that I bought 15 years ago) is older than my first car was in 1993. People talk to me about it in parking lots as if it was a unique vehicle. They made millions of these and for so many years that there were still plenty on the roads until recently and to me, they never felt old as they were brand new and out of my reach when I got my driver's license! I have to admit they are getting rarer around here! I'm even thinking about storing it for winter now!

I believe the "exploding Firestones" were due to Ford engineers recommending below rated tire pressures because a certain Ford SUV model liked to rest on the side of the highway with the shiny side down. Personally saw several of them in this position.

That recall incident was so notorious, they made references to it on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" during that time. »"Here's your damn Schwinn back¡ Repair totals are $89.95, will that be cash or card?" »"... I didn't order the Firestone tires."
@johnelder4273 Жыл бұрын
The Firestone tires in the 1970s and 80s earned the reputation of exploding quite honestly. I had two cars that came with Firestones, both sets separated and came apart prematurely while they still had plenty of tread. I haven't bought a Firestone tire since and never will.

Picked up an 03 Dodge Dakota quad cab with 95k miles for $8k and it was in good shape despite being in Colorado for most of its life. V8 engine in a midsize means it could tow if needed but on the highway it eats miles with its large gas tank. I've owned hardbodys for twenty years. In Colorado. The frames rot like crazy if your in an area that uses mag clhoride. Hardbody?? The body metal is the thinnest sheet metal ever put on a truck or car! That said the drivetrains are rock solid, the traction on the 4x4s is amazing , many came with rear posi stock. Parts are still available and fairly cheap. 400k and 290k trucks still don't use oil.
@Jeff_PNW Жыл бұрын
Haha, you're 100% right about the sheetmetal. I worked at a Nissan dealership when the hardbodies came out. Our sales guys jokingly referred to them as lardbodies because exterior panels were so soft. Other than that they were good trucks.

90's Chevy trucks are GARBAGE. I have a 92 half ton Silverado and a 2000 Chevy S-10, and they are both total crap. They both have ignition switches and windshield wiper switches which need replacing. The idiots at GM put ten pounds of crap into a one pound box with those awful steering columns and they are a NIGHTMARE to work on. The dash instrumentation is all plastic trash and the door handles break. I have been driving Chevys for 45 years and the quality is steadily going down the tubes. My best truck was a 1989 Toyota 4 cylinder mini truck. It handles like a sports car, got great mileage, and was durable as hell. You want trucks built in the 60's and 70's if you can find them. They are simple, durable, and rebuildable.

I would strip down old outdated equipment, clean with purple cleaner, which will etch the surface and provide a great bonding surface.. Once cleaned I used Wallylands brand 98 cent cans of primer and black paint.. For the factory orange, I used the factories canned paint.. Once done, the manager couldn't tell which one was factory or my work.. Sad part, he sold them as new equipment... Not refurbished.. A reel head that was worth $250 used, he sold for $1400 as new.. Took over all time for one head 2 hours.. Times 5 heads. Parts and labor total was $350, for a profit of $4,000, which he pocketed because they weren't in the inventory.. Gas prices will undoubtly keep going up due to WEF pressure to go green. Unless you work with the truck or can deduct gas bils from your income, get yourself something more efficient. Also 10k for 100k miles is not a great deal.
