I know a third reason to convert text to outline. Our customer was asking for us to use "Helvetica Condensed Italic" for a silk screen but the standard font set on my computer does not include that so I downloaded one from a web site. When I looked at the text, everything looked great but when I printed, there were tiny dots all around it which would cause a reject as you can imagine. By converting to outlines, this problem disappeared. Thanks for your help in solving this problem.

When a font is converted to outlines, an outline is added to it which makes the font thicker. It's barely noticeable on thick fonts because the outline is so thin, but particularly noticeable when converting really thin fonts. Is there a way of avoiding this? I am designing a logo and want to use a font that looks really good when thin, but when I convert it to outlines it looks slightly thicker and it just ruins its look. I need to convert to outlines because I want to export as SVG which looks really sharp on a website and can be resized without pixelation.
@CaryHawkins2 жыл бұрын
This is usually not a big deal as most of the time, it's not noticeable. You lose some hinting information when you convert to outlines and that affects how these fonts are displayed slightly. Have you tried exporting to svg and seeing if it looks thicker there too? If nothing else, you could do path offset by a small amount so that when it thickens up it looks as intended.
@lovemadeinjapan10 ай бұрын
Viewing in Chrome? That browser is incapable of dealing with 0-thickness outlines. Only Firefox and Safari will render these correctly.

I have the same issue here! Which is really noticeable on thinner fonts. Glad you asked.

I'm looking for a similar but seemingly impossible variation: I want to vectorize bitmap fonts by turning the shape into exact pixel-contours, like if it turns into perfect squares that get united into polygons. All vector tools seem to try to interpolate into fluent shapes.

I have another vector pixel art tutorial in there somewhere that might help. It has a pixel image of Megaman's face on it. See if that helps you. Vector tracing doesn't do well with sharp angles.

Sounds like an issue with your settings. Check to see if View > GPU Preview is on. If so, try cpu preview instead. If your gpu isn't strong enough, the art may appear pixelated.

Well, you are saving them as a raster filetype. If you want vector, you need to save as a vector filetype: ai, pdf, eps

If i have a png image with text on it, after image tracing it, the text disappears. How to fix this?
@CaryHawkins3 жыл бұрын
Threshold settings in live trace. It's either too high or too low probably. If you are doing something like a silhouette, all black, then the text is probably a lighter color and the threshold needs to be set higher to include it in the trace. Hope that helps.

Yes, this process actually creates an outline around the letters. It's much more noticeable on thin fonts because you can really tell the difference between before and after converting to outlines. I still haven't found a solution for this and it's very annoying.

I watched the whole video and I have the impression that after you found the font for free and downloaded it (it is 3 years I have it already) you didn't explain how to transform it in a vector I think and you went directly to "If we don't find the font for free" or something like that.
