Yes! Uruk Hai scouts are a video I've been waiting for. Getting the skin tone right is really tricky, its easy for them to look almost cartoonishly red whilst the movie Uruks are actually quite dark, and the various leathers is also a difficult look to pull off balancing between grittiness and making the model not too dark.
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
haha all good things come to those who wait :) Glad that you liked it, yes i agree - i think it's easy to go really red, or just really dark overall. But you have seen enough of my videos where i try to do things a smidge differently! I think the ragged look to the cloth will help them seem a bit more gritty, even if the colours are a touch brighter than the GW dark brown look :)
@Ynffy

One way to get smooth and varied skin tones in any color is to learn to use oil paints. I was hestitant for years but oils are superior when it comes to skin and cloth. Finding a nice variation for a group of Urukai Hai becomes a fun project instead of a chore. Once you learn how it works it is also very forgiving if you need to wipe away mistakes and you can add paint but stippling and than smooth it out. The downside is still the cleaning process and some people dislike the smell of oil paints.

Great painting video. Thanks. Just to clarify: When using Army Painter Speedpaints you use water to make more of a glaze and the Speedpaint medium to make a lighter version, right ?
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly! Switch that around - the water will make it more translucent and turn it into a great wash/shade paint. But for glazes i would go with the Medium route as you will still have a decent amount of pigment from the paint in there to control it better - so glazing should be easier to work with :)

Well damn, these look epic! I'm super keen to repaint my old Uruk-Hai in your 1st speedpaint style, but I'd have to keep it simple, so only trouble is I don't know what to do for the skin. Is there a way to paint the skin more like your 2nd model here but in say 2 steps with speedpaint? I've pre-order the Speedpaint Mega Set 2 and so excited to smash through all my grey LOTR models!
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes Жыл бұрын
I try! :) The second method was a few layers built up so you could replicate this with speedpaints somewhat, but it would be a case of getting a test model and trying it. Id guess something like crusader skin mixed with a touch of Slaughter red as a base and then work a couple darker shades from there to see if you can do a quick method. Alternatively you could apply something like a Fur Brown paint and then use speedpaint afterwards to get the red tones in. The mega set looks great doesn't it! Lots of new colours to try out :):)

Great video ! I really enjoyed the second version of Uruk Hai , can you just explain how you did the prime ? Was it chaos black spray + rhinox hide spray ? Will this prime also work with a metallic one ( lurtz ) ? Thanks for the help
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes Жыл бұрын
Thank you kindly, glad that you enjoyed the video :) For the priming you don't need to spray it Black then Rhinox, just go straight for Rhinox, that way it's just one less layer to do before you start painting - especially if you are using a spray can. But sometimes its good to have that black first - for example metal miniatures, where its not always the easiest to get into all the nooks and crannies. That way you always have a dark area of black which would naturally be some sort of shadow :) For my normal Uruk Hai which are more like 80% metal armour - i just prime them with Gun Metal (Leadbelcher) and go from there :) Hope that helps! :)

What is the best way to go about re-painting a model? I want to buy a set second-hand and half of them are already painted. Is it safe to just spray over or is there a way to remove existing paint without damaging the plastic?
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
If the paint isn't too thick and the details are still there - then i just paint over it :) but if you need to remove some paint then in the past i have used 'Isopropyl alcohol' and a toothbrush (not my own) and that has worked well enough for me. If its on metal miniatures then some acetone based nail polish remover has done the trick, i just leave the models in it overnight - but don't do this on resin or plastic miniatures - it will go blobby and horrid! :)

Hi! I wish I had this before I started on my own Uruk-Hai scouts, 12 done and I can already see how I can improve them! Though I'm opting for a different style, mainly with a green tabard/coat and bronze armour, and I was wondering what you'd use for that please? (I've only ever used GW paints, but Army Painter seems inviting! Especially with the ability to squeeze them out)
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
Ah that sounds like a pretty cool combination! What kind of greens are you thinking? GW paints are good too, the paint itself is great, just not a fan of the pots for me, Army painter i find is pretty good also, squeezy bottles i find are brilliant as you can control the amount the comes out pretty well (great for minimising wastage)
@97sampson
@97sampson 2 жыл бұрын
@@SwordsandBrushes Well initially I was going for a death world green -> Elysian green layer -> Ogryn Camo drybrush -> Krieg Khaki edges, but I wanted to improve on it since I struggle to get it smooth, and I think the AP paints would help me with measuring the paints better. I'm hoping to pick some up tomorrow perhaps, so I'd love to get an idea for the list of paints I'll need, which is primarily for: Bronze armour, the reddish skin, the green upper layer, the remaining leather armour/tassles and also some wood for say the bows and arrows of my Uruks.
@theconfusedhistorian714
@theconfusedhistorian714 2 жыл бұрын
One for the idea's list maybe, and keeping with the skin theme, maybe different types of Orc skin? Some (e.g. Gothmog, snaga) are quite pale, some (e.g. Sharku) are more tanned, some green (e.g. Goblins though you've done those), and others almost reddish (e.g. Grishnakh). I remember one in particular from ROTK being reminiscent of Star War's Darth Maul! Also, giving orcs different skin tones can be a good way to break up an orc horde where you are likely to have multiple models in the same pose.
@SwordsandBrushes
@SwordsandBrushes 2 жыл бұрын
agree having a few different skin tones would be great especially for a horde of orcs! I do have a video idea for our greenskin friends out there which is certainly on the list of "to do's" plus i found some hunter orcs today in the cabinet so thats a bonus! AND luckily, there will be a pretty cool looking Gothmog mini coming out soon which is screaming out for a video to be made :):)

I had a think about it and i think for the time being i will do LOTR and fantasy on this channel for sure, as well as scenery later on - perhaps to 40K too or i might do a separate channel with all things Sc Fi - i will see how it goes. For me it is not comprehensible, why Speedpainting is such a big issue in Miniaturepainting. Ok, when you have to paint an entire army it can be an issue, but is there anyone out there who stops time for this? My miniatures are done when I am proud of it. Sometimes it takes several days, cus during the process of painting I go blind and the project looks undone. On the other day it matured and luckily went complete, if you know what I mean. There is no need to speedpaint…

I think it's just another great tool/method that you can have in your painting arsenal - Theres so many methods these days such as dry brushing, airbrushing, using oils - it can be a bit overwhelming with what to do/try - especially if you are coming into this hobby. But the nice thing is that we are all in it together and whatever time we have or skills, money to buy what ever brand - it's just nice to paint minis and also play and have fun with others in our fine hobby :) Glad to hear that you are getting things finished off, whats the latest from your paint desk? :)
