We no-till, Heavy mulch here in SE Louisiana. We have had straight temperature (NOT INCLUDING HEAT INDEX) of 110F this year. Our garden looks absolutely amazing. Our soil was compacted red clay when we started our market garden last year. This year I can direct seed into that clay! We don’t use shade cloth or anything else to protect our plants.

We are in California and just went through a tough 2weeks, some new citrus I planted this year started getting scorched after a nice spring growth. So your episode was especially poignant. Especially the simplicity you tackle it with. I have the engineer's curse, as I tend to over think/complicate myself out of a solution. Keep up the great content!

The concrete in the bucket seemed like a good idea until I had to move them 😒💪🏾 😆. We normally have our shade cloth up before June because of how July is. This heat just snuck up on us FAST. This shade cloth is perfect. Allows light and rain to come thru.

That's a really nice looking garden. Quick tip. Put a tennis ball or something similar on top of that center pole so it doesn't tear the shade cloth.

That is a great idea! That pole is deceiving...it's coated in thick plastic and rounded at the top. We've been lucky for 3 years using it so far 🙏🏽. What things are you using to beat the heat this year?

@@TheNakidGardeners it was a mix of coming off the pandemic, inflation, and a lot of worrying on what could happen next. I’ve been gardening about seven months started easy with all the herbs and now I’ve got 2 cherry tomato plants producing. I just took a big swing 3 months ago and bought seeds to really get the most bang for my buck and I’ve got corn and green beans growing well. It’s a journey but it’s really enjoyable and therapeutic.

I am going to have to do this next year. We are already planning something similar. My tomatoes…some of them got sun scald.it’s just so hot here in GA. But have to say,despite the heat our garden has been truly prolific this year. can you use those clay spikes whenever you want for your tomatoes and other plants ? so you don't want to get your leaves wet during hot od the day but it's ok to get water on the leaves ?! I thought getting the leaves wet was just a bad thing because of diseases and such!

Yes you can use these around your tomatoes and peppers plant or any crop. You can get your leaves wet just have to make sure it's able to dry during the high heat of the day. It's called VPD, Vapor Pressure Deficit. There are charts but basically you want your plants sweating & not heat-exhausted. The shade cloth lowers temps by hopefully 10f while also keeping higher moisture levels for a more ideal VPD. I want a mist setup but I'm still playing with comprehending VPD numbers.

Containers are not the best way to grow in hot weather. So, 1/3 of the container filled with cardboard cut into approx 6 inch squares. Then at least 6 month old compost up to 4 inches from the top. Sow, water, then chopped up straw to the top of container. Lay a single cardboard 'lid' with slot allowing stem to pass through. Daily slide cardboard, water, cardboard slide back. Object: keeping the water in the container to keep plant damp. Aphids on tomatoes: spray with much diluted washing up liquid. Stop ants climbing: apply a smear of vassoline on stem just above cardboard lid. Once a week Epsom salts liquid feed. Happy gardening.

We had great success in growing in container in Texas. We were growing in mostly fabric containers and had about 2-4" of mulch to keep the moisture and keeping the soul cool. Everyone has their own method of doing things. Neither one is the wrong way if you're successful. This is our first year doing in-ground gardening and we are still learning. We noticed the Epsom salt didn't do much for flavor as the gardening myth claimed so we stop using that and mostly just use compost and vermicomposting since those are free things we can use. We don't really have a problem with aphid this year. I guess from our soil having life from the compost and vermicomposting. If we do have an issue with ants we will try the Vaseline method. Thanks

I never knew about those clay watering spikes. I'm gonna get me some of those. And that wine bottle in it is a good bit of info as well. I live in a very hot, dry climate during the summers and these will help a lot. Funny how I've not seen them at my nurseries.....or maybe I have but just didn't know what they were.

I get most of our plastic containers from the construction site. Once they are almost complete with the job the do landscape. Landscapers will give you those for free

Great question. MOST of the time when it rains it gets a lot cooler. Especially below 100° like here in Texas. The cooler weather allows the rain droplets not to act as a magnifying glass on the leaves. Reason why we try to water in the morning and evening. It gives the droplets time to evaporate and dry off the leaves better. Will there still be some damage? sometimes and possibly. However, you have to do what best in your area and garden. Hope that explains it for. Once again, great question.

I was using a shade cloth until the daily afternoon showers started. We always put a can or small bucket on top of the spike in the middle so it won’t poke through as easily. I was thinking umbrellas would be so cute lol. Idk if dollar tree still sells them, but you can bulk order with free shipping to store from their website. ☂️🪴☂️🪴☂️🪴☂️
