3 year old DEAD mini ecosphere revival

Life in Jars?

Life in Jars?

3 жыл бұрын

After three years, the mini ecosphere has completely dried up. All plants algae and animal inside the small closed ecosystem have died. In this update video we refill the dead mini ecosphere with water to try and see if we can revive it. Maybe new algae and animals will reappear.
Enjoy!

I've been following Life in Jars for most of the Covid season :) I started two in August, 2020 which quickly became opaque with algae. So I started a third, this time with paired magnets, about 1cm diameter, inside and outside, so I can scrape the inside of the jar and keep a window clear. I have it below a window beside my bed and watch it most every night. Thanks for all your posts!

300k Special Idea: Make a 300,000 ml Ecosphere. You could get a 300 liter (or 80 gallon) tank and seal it shut with a panel of plastic. Granted, this would take up a lot of room and be incredibly difficult to move safely as it would weigh around 300kg (Nearly 700 lbs). However, it would definitely be pretty special. Each of us viewers could be one milliliter in your tank.

I think a near boiling ecosphere could be interesting, basically keep a jar at around 65-70C and see what kinds organisms can survive. If you want an idea for subscriber benchmark - maybe using a science lab (do you have access to one from your classes?) to help you look at the difference in water between an ecosphere that has been sealed up a long time vs fresh - like what levels of nitrogen or uh... chemicals... (I am not scientist) in it. Or microscopic life differences you can't see with your microscope. I think that'd be interesting too. You might find out it was a great idea to not drink it, or you might find it was perfectly safe.
