That’s correct! I know my prices seem very high from an outside perspective, but they have to cover more than just labor and materials if I want to stay in business and continue to grow

Amen to that. I get so frustrated w/my boyfriend the ppl pleaseR that either gives our belts away or won't charge enough. My job is the painter. Even though I taught him how to make,he has yrs on making them & got good at it. Most definitely you get what you pay for. Most ppl that have our belts say they Luv them & wear every day. Some have had them for yrs. 8-10yrs has been my experience but a life time could happen as well. Haven't had any break, every once in awhile the silver snaps don't stay in place. I like the blk snaps anyway. I get so frustrated w/my boyfriend I almost don't want to make belts. I've got an industrial sewing machine that I still need to learn to use,I could be making biker vest or upholstery. Some customers don't bat an eye on the price of a belt & some ppl it's too expensive. Look at expensive sneakers & Fendi belts, how much ppl pay for them? The real used Fendi belts are as much as $800-$1000. & I highly doubt unknown rappers are wearing real Fendi belts, they're probably paying for a knock off $130-$150. I say if you're making it by hand charge accordingly to what your time is worth plus material/hardware. My apologies for my rant but I jus hand painted a belt w/a tooth pick for days that stamped all over & my bf wants to charge $125. Normally a belt from us is $125 stamped w/name or whatever word & painted. We used to charge $100 but leather went up in price. $100 is what my mentor who taught me said to charge, that was 8yrs ago. Really itz a piece of art to me. I most definitely look at them differently then I did before.

Your design is really unique, it looks to be Several different styles, Sheridan, Buscadero, etc. in one, which makes it very recognizable to you as a Maker. All Makers should be working towards this as a goal. Bravo! Keep up the great work.

I have been doing occasional leather work since I was exposed to the craft at a Veteran Hospital in 2002. The amount of work, talent, time and experience necessary to craft this belt easily justifies the cost. A similar comparison would be a Toyota verses a Rolls-Royce. Both are cars, have engines and will get you from A to B. Same here. Wonderful work!

Yes! I don’t really have much in stock right this moment but I could make one as plain as you’d like. Feel free to send me an email and I’d be happy to discuss further and show pictures.

Beautiful belts. Video backstitch. That rough out with buck stitch is pretty rad style. Thanks

Genuine is a grade like top grain, full grain... it is the lowest grade leather. Usually the last split, then it gets pressed, sanded, buffed, and finished. A lot of times embossed like this belt.

That is true! I probably could have done a better job at diving into the processes and explaining each type better. Thank you for clarifying that

@Girtyleatherco it's a very good marketing ploy. Anyone who is unaware, reads genuine, and automatically makes them think it's higher quality because it says genuine. The video especially lets people know why we charge what we do for the work we do. There's a lot of people that just don't know that we can charge and get as much as we do for a belt or anything else made with quality in mind. Just had an argument a few days back about this very thing with a few stating I couldn't get $175 (starting point) for a leather belt without branding (like LV) or using exotic leather. I'm sure this video would've helped at the time. They don't understand the difference between a store bought genuine leather belt and a custom shop handmade one.

I personally don’t think the genuine leather belt you showed in the video in anyway provides less durability than the veg tanned belt compared in the video. On the contrary the belt you made is a sandwiched belt which itself may be less durable than the embossed one ( unless you used a very high quality of adhesive ) you were talking about. The belt you made is actually hand tooled which is great but you too know that you charge way higher for that belt.

I'd love to have a belt like that, it's hard to justify as hard as I am on them. My Leatherman and the wet dirty conditions usually twist mine up

If the edge is burnished and looks perfectly slick then its probably that composite leather/genuine leather garbage. REAL leather, like top or full grain, will have rougher edges. It can still be burnished or lined, but it wont typically be rounded and slick...especially with store bought belts. And also the back side or rough side will clue you in. The garbage belts will again look perfect, and have some laminated liner, whereas real top grain leather will have a slightly rough and imperfect character to it. And most importantly, the good leather is usually much more supple feeling.

There are people in this world who would spend that on a name brand t-shirt. I don’t think it’s that far fetched to believe someone would spend that on a handcrafted item that is being made specifically for them and actually going to get many years of use from it. They also know exactly where that money is going and can even watch hours of my content to see what goes into the process to make it cost that much 🤷🏽‍♂️

anyone who pays $70 for a "genuine" leather belt is getting scammed you can get very well build single and maybe double (if machine sewn) layer Full grain leather belts for that price or slightly more but they will last many times longer.
