Join me for this 30 Minute Ashtanga practice where we will draw from both the Primary and Intermediate Series to build a shorter, but still well rounded, practice. Some days you just don't have the time for doing either series in its entirety, and if you are trying to maintain the momentum of a near daily Ashtanga practice that can present a dilemma. There is a misguided notion that within the Ashtanga approach it is either all or nothing, and it can be frustrating when time isn't on your side. Well, there is good news! Time is on your side, even when there isn't as much as you might have hoped for. Life tosses curve balls all the time, and on the days it does, it can be better to a shorter practice than to simply skip it. So let's get on our mats and use the time we have to our advantage.

Thank you for sharing a blended Primary and Second series abbreviated sequence!!! This is awesome! I have been working both for some time, but don't always have time for fulls. I have one major question. Could you share your thought process behind why you selected the poses you did? I would love some context behind why you chose some and not others. It really helps me better understand the abbreviated sequence. Thank you!

I apologize for not responding to your question sooner, I wanted to make sure I gave it some thought and then the baby ate my brain, lol The answer to why I chose some poses over others is that I wanted to get a well rounded mix of what the two series have to offer, so that in a shorter window of time I can come away feeling balanced. I will likely make some other videos that also blend primary and intermediate with different postures. After spending some time with each series you become aware of the relationship between the various poses. In some cases the connection is more obvious than others, but there are common threads. Seeing those threads can give you the opportunity to put the postures together in a way that they still relate, they still build upon one another, like they do within each series, but without following just one series for that practice. Sometimes you want a practice that allows you to focus on some of the more “intense” postures, and other times you want to focus on a “softer” practice. The postures themselves don’t always dictate the level of challenge as some days you may simply be up for doing more than others. I hope this helps to clarify the “why” of this practice, though I realize it could be seen as being a bit vague in that it didn’t go pose by pose for why it was or was not included. 🙂🙏🏼 - Justin
