If you immediately put on a new roof and address that wall that’s pulling away, you would have stabilized it for awhile and could put all the floors back slowly. If that isn’t done immediately, you will lose the house altogether.❤️🐝🤗

Hey little heads up….we use mole soil mounds as it is great for aiding growth, as it has beneficial microbes in the soil,the plastic bags that you buy soil in are useful to keep the soil in ,cut open one side only at the top of the bag .multi use instead of single use ….better for you and your land …the planet in general. Re voles: continue to use raised beds with 1" square hardware wire across the bottom so animals can't get through.

very nice video, specially for the “randomness”: i liked to see the castle of Tomar (maybe next time show us more of the town) and a glimpse of your surroundings. Thanks for the house tour: there is in fact a lot of work ahead of you, but the potential is definitely there. Most importantly, make sure to avoid further structural damage, second get yourself a comfortable space to live in (what you are obviously doing right now), and from there take it step by step. Hopefully, you have a decent budget for your project. Good luck!

Walls of barn and hose looks surprisingly sound . roof of house eill have to come off and redone possibly new ring beam. One wall pilling away from other needs chrcking? New under pinning of foundation . caution do mot rush to try and convert all areas to living arreas. Working farms needs lots of storage space especially with horses

I'm a salvaging person, I would be checking to see if any of the traditional furniture was whole enough to put into safe storage, and also kitchen ware and maybe stove could be cleaned and useful. I'm 68 and have kitchenware that's older than I am.

Yeah indeed I saw a few little trinkets that I think could look lovely. One of the rooms has a chest in which looks in surprisingly good condition so I will need to get that out and have a proper good look at it. You can't beat the old kitchenware it was made so much better back then 🤗

Thanks dude, a local here has said just leave the trees and when U harvest this year to prune as I harvest so basically chop a branch get all olives then put the branch in a pile for the leaves to fall off. If I can get 26 litres I will be chuffed 🙏🏻

Oh, renovation- definitely. if you have the determination and stamina for the job--do it. I watched for several years- from raking away the rat nests in the thick, filthy hay floor-smashing up the concrete floor -- to replacing the roof and a couple years more work in addition to that, Theo and Bea finally did it. I have seen a lot worse places then your recovered and made very livable. With the roof and floors collapsing actually will make it easier to take down. The main thing to protect is the rock walls from getting rain from the top as it will wash out the clay/dirt that the walls were originally built with. I would like to give you one piece of advise as you have the pine trees all around you property and that is watching Walt with processionary caterpillar's as they can be deadly.

Thanks 🙏🏻 yeah the caterpillars are usually about Feb - may depending on when they nest but we have been okay here they must not like those type of pine trees but we plan to plough a trench around them every year so if there are any caterpillars they go straight into the ground as that's all they are looking for is soft dirt to crawl into. Its the main reason I made th fence around garden so walt isn't up there sniffing all the time haha thankyou for the care though as it is a big problem over here. ☺️

Your Olive trees are quite old, you need to keep the base of the trees free from suckers that shoot up, just prune them off. I had a grove of 900 Olive trees in Western Australia, they were just sticks when I planted them, in their third year they started to produce, they normally produce a good crop one year and a very big crop the next. By the fifth year our small trees gave us just on 80 litres of oil. Look after your trees and they will give you much more oil than you will be able to use. Also keep the grass away from the base of the trees, and on fruit trees keep them fairly clear out to the drip line. (edge of the overhanging branches) hope that helps.

@@escapetothequinta Our Olive trees were Manzanillo and Frantoio for oils and Kalamata for eating, but in the beginning we crushed them all for oil. We sold up after 8 years, but went back to collect 20 Lt drum of oil for a few years after, but we still couldn't get through that much in a year. I cannot tell you what the trees produced by the time they were mature.

Hi Dave, another great video.. so happy for Sophia that the horse is coming soon. Have you thought about putting cement board down in the shower floor area. You can tile directly onto that, and being that it’s small it shouldn’t be too hard. Osb will rot out fairly quickly. The refresh viewing of the old house was great.. I’m seeing the barn as a better starting point too. It looks a lot more structurally sound than the house. Sending love to you both, and to Walt of course ❤️❤️❤️

Well I was thinking about putting some waterproofing down like a pond liner and then make my own base with concrete and dye..... And then if that fails possible go down the tiling route hahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@escapetothequinta even better, using the cement , (tiling is for the birds) but if you can use cement board as your base it will last a lot longer. My daughter’s house had rotted through when she bought it. There was osb flooring under the tiles. All good now with the new floor (whole new bathroom) . It had rotted out around the drain holes. Having a set plan, a check list of everything that needs doing and the order in which they need to be done would help. If it were my property I'd gut the entire house and barn. Have all the debris removed so you can see the walls, find the load bearing walls, then work from there. Starting with a good foundation first, then walls, then a roof. Out of curiosity, why does Sophie have or need a horse? Wow, so much to do. There will come a time when you'll look back to this video and remember how far you've come. As others have said, you have a vision, you're both very young, and time is on your side. Looking forward to seeing the plans for these future project homes. Yeah I think that's the plan once the cowshed is done it'll be full force ahead with those building i cant wait! 🤗🤗🤗 Sophia has always loved horses and it's her passion this horse she has now she rescued from a terrible place and the horse was weeks off death and she recovered her to be able to compete and live her best life so we want to retire her here in Portugal and give her her best days. Yes if taken from a herd they can go crazy alone however if they have always been alone they would buddy up nicely with our 2 horses. I don't know why but I love them such great peaceful creatures 😍

Heya Dave, nice tour that was of Tomar, great little city! The house looks do-able, I would keep the outside stone structure and take out everything else to start with. Yeah all the wood is completely knackered I think the roof needs to come off and get the structure safe with a ring beam and then start to reintroduce the floors back in 🙏🏻

Yes I need to spend a good day clearing the area around them. Giving them space to breathe and stopping the brambles from choking them also I can get to the vines then easier 🙏🙏🙏

Yes I would love to recover as much as possible. I would love for once it's done for people to think it was a well preserved Portuguese house and not just a modern build you know 🤗🤗🤗

Think it may be a little late to plant winter potatoes. Should they have been planted in march at the latest in April . All the trees are looking great. I've only got a small space for growing vegetables and fruits love to have about half of an acre to grow on. Thanks for showing the house, think I've watched all your videos but have never seen the inside

Half an acre is loads I think that's about the space I will be using I think the horses will have most of the land hahah. Have you ever read a book John Seymour the complete guide to self sufficiency it's a really good book about smallholding and gardening 😊😊😊

Masya Allah the place is really beautiful, very calm, like there are no humans at all. Is it really like that, or is it only crowded with people on certain days? I hope one day I can go there. I like ancient buildings like that

It is generally very very quiet on market days there is a bit more activity but so much more quieter then big cities. We went to Nazare beach yesterday and there was no one else there haha I will post something on Instagram to show you. If you like ancient building you will love central Portugal 😁😁😁

Unless you have stacks of cash hidden away, will you have enough money to do both buildings? I like the barn building. Could look amazing and very modern-rustic. The house looks a little more traditional and, I don't know, is it worth it? May be beyond hope. The Newbys knocked down one of their destroyed houses. They are planning to rebuild it, but there's no limit to what you can decide to do. You don't have to restore everything - depends on how you want to live. Could turn the basement bits into garages and storerooms.

I will get some quotes but I really don't know yet but you are right I like your way of thinking. Not everything has too be done and we have quite a large urban plot so we could maybe set the house back in the future if we wanted too. Lots of food for thought 🤔. Haha they slept downstairs and upstairs was where the hay was. There used to be a hole in the floor where the hay was pushed down..... Though now you have me thinking of cows tip toeing up the stairs hahahaha. Thanks for commenting have a lovely weekend 🤗

Just on your rant about the string shouldn't associate all farmers dumping there string in the ground as we recycle all our string which can now be used to make new do some research.

Hiya, no I'm not tarnishing everyone with the same brush I super respect anyone that recycles. I just can't believe how much of it there was. Surely a biodegradable twine could be used. But I suppose that may not work as well in bailer machines. At horse yards I see so much in with the piles of hay to compost its mad. Really glad you recycle too. If everyone does there but the planet becomes much better. Thanks for commenting bud, keep up the good work 🙏🙏🙏🤗
