I’ve been on a mission to reach 30 pull-ups in one set. My previous best was 28. Now at 59 years old, the clock is ticking. Prior to this video I had spent 6 weeks making weighted pull-ups my main focus. I was planning to get to 22 before slowing down the pace, then hanging on until I hit 30, but that didn’t happen. Instead I opted for a hanging rest to get me to 30.

I think the controversial thing about this performance is that you didn't do 31 pull-ups after banging rep 30 so explosively. You're amazing brother, much respect. Congratulations on achieving your objective 🫡

Hitting my first in may and manage to do 10 consecutive one month later. Deep respect for you at this age. I thought I was the old guy haha. Hello Rob from the Netherlands! It’s incredible how it takes us ages to get the first muscle up, then only a short while to get multiple reps. 10 is impressive, I’ve only managed that a few times. I’m thinking of more challenges now I’ve done the 30 pull-ups one, so maybe it will be more muscle ups.. thanks for watching, and pleased it’s inspired you to keep going for years to come.

I feel some secondhand accomplishment from that! I remember watching your video about the weighted pull up program you used to get there just minutes after you posted. Will you still be making a video detailing that program because I will certainly follow it and update you on my progress. I used to be able to do 20+ solid pull ups in just about any grip and as I’ve gained weight and slowed down training I can barely do 10 even on a good day. One thing I’ve noticed though is I gain the strength back pretty quickly when I’m consistent and I feel the program you used will take me to the next level. I’m so glad I found your channel. That was absolutely amazing - bravo! As an older guy (53), I find this pretty inspirational. I tried to get to 10 (!) consecutive pullups a few years ago, and just about managed it, although the last few reps were questionable. 30 is outstanding. I'm going to get back into it this coming year, and pullups will feature prominently in my training, although I don't see 30 in my future, at least for 2024. I think a hanging rest is totally fair game, as long as your feet are off the ground. Question for you: have you ever had any issues with golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)? That has plagued my training, although I've been able to work around it previously. I hope that by building up gradually during the course of next year, I can keep it at bay.
@funwithcalisthenics
@funwithcalisthenics 7 ай бұрын
Hi, I’ve been really lucky with my elbows, never had a problem at all. I had a few problems with a shoulder a few years back, just had to rest it. Definitely build up slowly, that’s my advice, and if things start hurting just stop. Maybe mix it up with push-ups too, if that’s less painful. Appreciate your comment about feet of the ground, I agree, but when I uploaded this video 8 was thinking some purists may have a few harsh words to say about it.

Well done - training and consistency paid off. Hanging rest is good idea. I'm 49 and just starting out- this set you did and the training that went into it is an inspiration for me. I use rings for mine (as I can position them higher than I could a bar and also as ability to rotate forearm through the pull seems to be less bad on my tendons at this stage). Any thoughts you have on that as opposed to sticking with straight bar and toughing it out much appreciated.
@funwithcalisthenics
@funwithcalisthenics 6 ай бұрын
Martin, everything I’ve read and learnt is that the rings are better for you than the bar, for so many reasons. I guess I just really enjoy the bar work. I have a set of rings, and hang them from the bar and really enjoy using them too. They are so versatile. If you are happy with the rings, I’d stick with them.

So very impressive! Not many people AT ALL can do 30 pull ups, let alone at your age! I’m 60 and I’m almost back to square one with my pull-ups to be fair. I notice that you have such great technique. You sort of go around in a quarter circle and you don’t go to full dead hang at the bottom. I have this habit of going full dead hang every rep and it’s like doing dead stop pull ups every rep. I’ve never got more than 12 at bodyweight. How do you train to keep the tension there, just don’t let yourself go to full dead hang? I’m sure I’d do more if I could do that. Well done anyway! 👏👏👏
@funwithcalisthenics
@funwithcalisthenics 6 ай бұрын
That’s a really interesting observation. Yes I do tend to go a little more around the bar, more than straight up and down. I’m not sure why that happens. I suspect it’s not the most efficient way to do pull-ups. Sometimes I really focus on full range of motion dead hang pull-ups, they are tougher for sure. When I’m going for max reps, I like to think I’m doing the full range of motion, but watching this video back, I’m clearly not. That video was all about max reps. For training purposes, I’d keep doing what you are doing, it’s harder, but more purist. Having said all that, there are many people that believe half reps, in pull-ups and push-ups are just as good. Prison inmates apparently do shorter reps, with push-ups but get totally jacked! Food for thought.
@Ian.Does.Fitness
@Ian.Does.Fitness 6 ай бұрын
@@funwithcalisthenics It’s good to look jacked but my main motivation is to be able to do the moves with full ROM as clean as possible. I think your pull up technique is great. Keeping that retraction is tough to do. You need a lot of strength to do that but then you get elastic return on each rep back up. Swings and roundabouts defo. Not wrong, just different. I’ll carry on getting my retraction strength for now. Thanks for the tips! 🙏

This is brilliant. Imagine being in the gym and seeing this 😊. I'm sure you've experimented with different body positions, but do you ever feel there is some energy leakage because your legs are not together, would tensing your glutes, calves etc give you even more reps?
@funwithcalisthenics
@funwithcalisthenics 4 ай бұрын
That’s so true. I’m working hard on keeping my legs together on adding tension to the glutes. Sometimes I even tie my legs together with a band. Never see this in the gym.. but if it’s not busy, I do do an occasional muscle up, just for fun.

You did it!!! Well done and very impressive. As someone who started with Pull-ups 2 years ago I can imagine what this means. 49 years I was not able to do a single pull-up. Then I started with bands and in the meantime my max. is 15. So your results give me a lot of motiviation to continue and improve even in the fifties. What also impressed me is your "one-arm-resting". Only someone who ever tried to hang on one arm knows what your "resting" means. For me you included an additional excercise within the 30 pull-up challenge ;-) Keep going; you are a real inspiration for a lot of people. Thanks for sharing your videos.

Hello Markus, yes the one arm resting is a weird concept. The first time I tried it, it nearly pulled my arm out of its socket! Took me a few months to be brave enough to try again. Then after some guidance about not swinging at the same time etc… I finally cracked it. So pleased you found it inspiring. I’m just doing what I enjoy, if it helps you in some small way, then I’m delighted. Thanks for showing your appreciation. It’s not easy being a guy, getting older. 😊💪👍👍👍

Great achievement. But for most selection tests I have been through in the military, the reps have to be continuous and from a full extension each time. Stopping for any inordinate amount of time, changing grip positions or releasing one hand to rest it would disqualify you.

You are probably right. I think the military insist on dead hang pull-ups with a seconds pause at the top and bottom of each rep. That’s a great workout! I do that style too sometimes. Thanks for watching.

In my opinion, the best way is to keep training hard so you increase or at least maintain your strength, while improving your diet, which will help with a little weight loss. So not too many mince pies and Christmas pudding!

@@funwithcalisthenics yeah, it seems that strength doesn't really correlate much with "appereance", and not all the ones with abs can do pull ups or muscle up. Thanks. Starting with bands, we'll see how long until i can do a muscle up.

Lighter is always better for max pullups reps. The guys who hold the world records clearly avoid leg training and most other training. They are thin. At some point, you have to decide what you want your goal to be (max pullups reps or well-proportioned whole body).

I lack retraction strength too, as I sink lower after a few reps and can only get chin to bar. Think I need to focus on more volume, build that retraction strength on less weight then return to bodyweight pull ups.

when I was in basic training 1978 MCRD USMC we did pull-ups, 3 mile run and 2 minute max sit-ups. they would allow us to hang by one arm and shake out the other arm. i guess they figured if you are climbing that hanging by one arm to rest is good for your survival.
