the problem isn't that its SUPER dangerous ALL the time, its just the fact that if you AREN'T going to PREPARE for it, you shouldn't do it, so don't dig straight down, because chances are, your not gonna always be prepared for what comes after. also, that lava bit, is only useful if the lava is one block deep... any deeper, and well your in more trouble. caves however are safe as long as you got something to break fall or feather fall/slow fall on boots or potions. but yeah, still, don't dig down, because it STILL can screw you over.

2:45 digging straight down is still bad. A water bucket cannot save you every time (it usually won't) And even though it's a low chance of falling into lava, it's still a chance nonetheless and should be avoided. He also didn't take into account digging into a really tall cave and falling to your death, or digging straight up and getting suffocated. Still never dig straight down or up, no matter how safe you think you are. And even if you do end up safe, you cannot easily get up or down the hole you just dug. If you need to dig straight down, mine out 1x2 blocks and stand in the middle of those 2 blocks.
