Well, i dooo have to say, excess of 200 yds I'd argue to your point! 400 yds is pretty do-able and adequate for 7.62x39. Definitely smack ipsc steel most of the day long, at 400. 500yds though!, that's quite another story. Definitely drops off hard there. Great video/ podcast 👍👍

I really like your approach to explaining these cartridges. Both are very good rounds. Love the intermediate cartridges, I hand load for both and have taken whitetails in Missouri.

I’m still at a toss up. I like both, would prefer as quiet as possible but not necessary. I do like the galil and CMmg mutant but I also would like the new psa krink. My decision boils down to which would survive longer in the US? I don’t want to be 50 and I can’t find either or. I’m thinking about possibly doing a short barrel 308. I’ve been invited hog hunting so it has to serve well for that purpose as well. I would like it to be a piston but not necessary either.

If I do 300 blackout I will be doing an ak but a 5.56 custom. Basically I want to standardize my ammo and have 3 maybe 4 max

I'd love to see some 300 Ham'r compared. It's definitely better supersonic than 300 blk. I have and like both for different reasons
@Thebiggamehuntingblog3 ай бұрын
You're definitely right about the 300 HAMR. The 300 Blackout gives better subsonic options, but the 300 HAMR is unquestionably more powerful with the supersonic options.

Could you do a comparison with the 8.6 blackout and the .338 Arc and also do gel tests?
@Thebiggamehuntingblog14 күн бұрын
That's a good idea and I appreciate the comment. No guarantees on if/when I'll be able to do that specific comparison though
@jmc04107114 күн бұрын
@@Thebiggamehuntingblog Oh I do understand that. I just wanted to ask and see what you thought about it. I've heard talk that the 338 Arc was created to rival the 8.6 and that it is also more efficient, that there is less room left in the case when loaded with powder. So I'm curious. Thanks!

I did talk about both cartridges a bit in my recent 338 caliber podcast episode. Have a listen here (be sure to subscribe too): kzbin.info/www/bejne/h53SgKGIhsx_Y8k

The 300 BLK uses pistol powder (in both its sub and super cartridges). This was part of the design strategy. Pistol powder burns faster, so max muzzle velocity is generated in shorter barrels. There is very little benefit to having a 300 BLK barrel greater 16”. It’s just not worth the extra length and weight. In shorter barrels, the 300 BLK muzzle velocity is reduced compared to the 16” standard, but this reduction is not as greats as with short barreled variants of calibers using rifle powder, such as 5.56 and .308 Win. In fact, short barrels sold in those rifle calibers are (IMHO) a complete rip off. This makes the 300 BLK a very viable platform over a wide range of barrel lengths. The result: More energy per inch of barrel length.

Excellent points, thanks!
@jorgesolis9468Ай бұрын
But you still gain enough velocity to matter with 125 gr bullets going from the 9 inch barrel up to 16 inches is 200 fps it may not seem like much but it's enough to give it an energy and range boost of about 300 ft lbs which is alot considering that's also the usual difference between 9mm 124 gr plus p and 357 mag 125 gr besides you avoid the whole pistol brace and 90 degree fore grip issues and if u do go with 16 inches well you're picking performance over portability and weight savings so for example hunting

With handloading, would 200+gr round nose soft point be an option for subsonic?
@Thebiggamehuntingblog3 ай бұрын
Maybe, but I doubt any old round nose soft point would work here. It would need to be something specifically designed for expansion at very low impact velocities, otherwise you risk having the bullet just "pencil through" the animal without expanding at all.
@BullseyeBenR3 ай бұрын
I like 300 blackout better beyond get full powder in a shorter barrel and really good suppressed
@jorgesolis9468Ай бұрын
That statement is only true with subsonic loads and even then there is still enough pressure that they do increase speed in 16 inch barrels it's just a statement based on a misconception the truth is it doesnt lose as much performance as its 5.56 nato brother when it goes to short barrels

I run about 2,200 fps on the TAC-TX and the V-Max and 2,100 fps on the Balistic Tip. This is out of my 16 inch setup. I'm not sure about the fps on my 7.5 or 10 inch pistols.

Just had an idea for a potential cartridge comparison video, if you're looking for new content ideas. Large pistol cartridges that are also sometimes used in rifles. Usually lever or single shot rifles. .357 Mag V. 44 rem Mag. Maybe put them up against something most are more familiar with out of those guns, like a 45-70 or 30-30?
@RonhickmottАй бұрын
Hmmm, skipped over the 30 carbine, pretty sure it comes perilously close to assault rifle specs.
@ThebiggamehuntingblogАй бұрын
Sort of. The 30 Carbine was the first round to approach those specs, but really starts to fall off out in the 200-300 yard range. Both the 300 Blackout and 7.62x39 are markedly more powerful than the 30 Carbine.
