300: The Final 300 Seconds (perhaps the most epic 5 minutes of cinematic history!)

Every time I watch 300 I get massive chills when I get to the ending. It is the most dramatic, terrific, exciting, stimulating, endearing, inspiring five minutes of any movie I've ever seen! The first song is "Message for a Queen" and the second is "Remember Us."
This clip might be a little less impacting taken out of context, but prepare to be moved and give it a shot.
Speech to the Spartan high council and army
(aka. Dilios' Battle Call at Plataea):
"Remember us: as simple an order as a king can give. Remeber why we died. For he did not wish tribute, nor song, nor monuments, nor poems of war and valor. His wish was simple: "Remember us," he said to me.
That was his hope, should any free soul come across that place in all the countless centuries yet to be, may all our voices whisper to you from the ageless stones; "Go tell the Spartans, passerby, that here by Spartan law we lie."
And so my king died, and my brothers died. barly a year ago. Long I pondered my kings cryptic talk of victory. Time has proven him wise. For from free Greek to free Greek the word was spread that bold Leonidas and his 300, so far from home, laid down their lives; not just for Sparta, but for all Greece and the promise this country holds. Now, here on this ragged patch of earth called Plataea, Xerxe's hordes face obliteration!

I was in Arnhem two years ago and I had the opportunity to be in the cemetery where they buried all the allies and Germans who died during the battles of '44 (fighting for the strategic control of the bridges ofreció Arnhem and Nimega through which the allied army had to pass to Berlin). For anyone interested, they did indeed accomplish their mission. However, the actual account of the Battle of Plates goes something like this. Dilios (not his historic name) went back to Sparta and did convey the king's message. But, he was part of two that were sent home and the other ridden with guilt at his cowardice for not dying with his king and brothers hung himself. Dilios did deliver the message to Queen Gorgo and the council. However, he was "disgraced" for leaving and was barely acknowledged. At the Battle of Plates, Dilios DID redeem himself and earned him a proper Spartan burial and headstone (only reserved for honorably serving soldiers and mothers who died in childbirth. But, Dilios was conveyed NO honors from the battle due to him being shunned. That and he also charged into battle like a berserker and did not stay with his unit. As Spartan and Agoge tradition teach teamwork and fighting for the man beside you. Dilios had no official order from Leonidis I to return and that is why he was labeled a deserter. A fate worse than death for a Spartan Warrior.

The whole film is Dilios' battle cry. That's the way to view it. He's getting the Greeks pumped up, telling them how grotesque the Persians are, that they're uncivilised barbarian monsters, that they have no honour, they're cowards, so far beneath the Spartans and other Greeks that the Greeks need not fear them, that an army of Greeks will erase this 'filth' from the face of the earth. That's all this film is.

Aristodemus (man Dilios is based of) was ordered to return to Sparta because of an infection in his eye, not a combat wound. Let's just say Spartans didn't take it well, he was basically shunned, "Aristodemus the Coward". In battle of Plataea, Aristodemus fought like an absolute madman, slaying countless Persians before he fell. He redeemed himself but received no special honor, because of his suicide-like berserker charge and breaking the formation

Just got back from a study abroad in Greece and actually had the opportunity to visit the site where those 300 Spartans were buried. Written in ancient Greek, the tombstone roughly translates to "O stranger, tell the Spartans that here we lie, obedient to their laws.” In other words, they followed their Spartan code to the very end, never surrendering, and never retreating.

I'm a big fan of the movie, but it did over dramatize the battle of Thermopylae. The 5 thousand plus Greeks aiding in the battle were paramount. Also what Themistocles did during the battle of Salamis might be one of the most impressive Greek victories during this era. However it was all for nought after the Persians won at Thermopylae.

@@Valeij221 I'm with you man... the portrayal of Spartans in 300 is as alpha as it gets. You should checkout the history channel documentary that came out a little after the movie. In the movie when Leonidas says our women could have won the battle, he wasn't lying.

The thing about this film being over dramatised is that it's not meant to be an actual account of what happened, it's the story as the Greeks would have told it. Obviously the Persians didn't have Giant Golems, Xerxes wasn't a massive god and there were no Goat ladies in his camp, but that's how the story was told long ago and how the movie was made, and when you watch it with the knowledge that it's a myth it becomes an even better movie in my opinion

@@chrism1598 hey Chris I just have two questions 1) what did Persians do after winning Thermopylae, did they push to win more land etc 2) why didn’t the other Greek states help the Spartans when the Persians arrived at their lands, did they not realise the massive Persian army would continue to take **more** land after beating the Spartans? Just imagine this... an enemy has invaded your land and you must fight back. The enemy is huge, but lacks the training you have, which is beyond levels of extremes most regular people can comprehend. You send a small party commanded by your king to hold off the invaders and fight them to the death, losing everybody but still dealing a devastating blow. It's a year later and the enemy outnumbers you by somewhere between 3:1 or maybe even at 1:1. Your training makes this almost the easiest victory you can imagine. In a way you almost feel sorry for the enemy, but only for a moment - after all, they're invading your land and not the other way around so all bets are off. It's go time.

Hmmm I don’t think you can compare! This scene is more emotional by nature of the movie’s conclusion; the sacrifice of Leonidas and the brave 300. Ride of the Rohirrim however occurs 3/4 into the movie with still plenty to explore in the story.
