I can't tell if you did or not, but you'll want a vapor barrier between the door and the hardboard. Otherwise that hardboard will get wet and swell and/or mildew. Loving the build!!!
@Freedom_is_better_than_safety4 жыл бұрын
This. ^^^^ The exterior belt moldings in a vehicle allow water to weep down the window and into the bottom of the door, and drain out. Without a water/vapor barrier there, that hardboard will get damp, warp, then turn to mush. Good exterior belt moldings and moisture barriers are a must.

@@Freedom_is_better_than_safety Not all the time take it from me I own a 95 starlet and it uses the same hardboard door cards and the ones that were in there before were in a bad shape and when I made new ones I didn't put the vapour barrier in thinking it would be good but it did get wet and it did warp a bit so it would be a good idea to put them in even thou the weather strips are in place

Robert Febur Simply go to Home Depot, get thick plastic drop cloth. Cut it to size and glue on the inside door frame before placing the new door panels.

I think you should put some wood staples on the back of the hardboard so if the glue gives it doesn’t fall apart

Just wrap everyting you can with the black vinyl you have on the doors

1:17 Just to let you know for the future. I have NEVER had a spray can adhesive hold vinyl for any significant length of time. Your best bet is to use something like Weldwood Landau Top Adhesive sprayed from a gun. I usually just buy a $15-ish Harbor Freight one and throw it away after I'm done. The Landau Top Adhesive isn't cheap, but it is absolutely the best thing I've ever used. For a bit of flair, you can buy hobby foam in around 1/8" thick pieces, cut it to shape before gluing the vinyl down, and add some cool designs.

Door accessories would look great sprayed the same as the outside. I'd also treat the plastic on the new dash to give it the plastic a protective layer keep it looking new for longer. And easier to clean. Its looking good with all the hard work you've put in.

Love seeing you do something that I do as a living. I cover alot of things in vinyl for the company I work for. Also happy to see you not lay the vinyl down first but instead lay the laminate down onto the vinyl. That's the way to do it.

Fixed headliner on my volvo 740 recently. Common method in sweden is to use speaker fabric, like what you would use for a subwoofer box. Can get them in big sheets and looks decent if you do it right.

For the headliner you can strip it then use black truck bed liner rolled on to look good

You can replace the headliner with regular fabric from a fabric store and for the A pillars you can use expanding foam and then shave it down to shape then smooth out with bondo.... that’s what we do for custom a pillars in the audio shop
@the_money_pits4 жыл бұрын
On my ke20 corolla, i made strap handles from a leather belt. turned out really good. Used a eyelet punch set with some brass plated washer eyelet grommets for the holes. Just an idea, cheap and looks mint :D
@TheCarEnthusiast4 жыл бұрын
For the headliner, what if you did the same kind of thing as the door panels and vinyl-wrap a thin board and then rivet it into the roof in a consistent pattern? You could even add a thin layer of foam and it would add some sound insulation and provide a good finish
@gabetrudeau16414 жыл бұрын
You should definitely use a fleece for the headliner that’s what I did and I love it!

@Droopy5784 жыл бұрын
Great job. I learned a couple tricks from my good friend who use to do Automotive interiors. For door panels, you can get headliner material cause it has some cushion, and glue that to the back of the synthetic leather then glue them to the Hardboard. Also, you can put plastic drop cloth, cut to size as a vapor barrier to the inside door opening so the hardboard doesn’t turn to mush. As well as adding some Jute padding behind the hard board to help with insulation or use dynamat. For the “A” pillars, try going to junkyard and getting them from some random car and test fit to the ‘Rolla. Paint them or wrap them in suede. How to install Headliner without removing the windshield. Here’s an idea, use the hard board, cut contour of roof, then to 3 to 4 panels and wrap them. To install them or hold them down, use heavy duty Velcro. Hope this helps out ! 👍👍

Have you considered going with dupli-color fabric paint for the headliner? I've seen some people use it....or even a fabric dye? Little more messy but it keeps the fabric softer then the fabric spray paint
@shplayshiggty75374 жыл бұрын
Great job on the panels man! I remember doing something like that on my beamer when I was in high school, I didn't have the cash for masonite back then so 1/2" scrap plywood a nice sand and some stain lol.

for the headliner you should diy with custom fabric of your choice. I watched a video how to once and its similar to the door cards you just did with more disassembly required.

@timwegman57764 жыл бұрын
It’s looking good. You should try to Flock the door pillars look it up you just paint them with a sticky glue and shake flocking on them and it looks like Suede material when it’s done. Also I think you should go the extra mile and glue some material on your head liner then put new carpet in. I don’t think any of that would be too hard or expensive and would make a world of difference hey you could put a new steering wheel if you really want to up your game but I really think the other stuff should be at the top of your list.
@henningkock44364 жыл бұрын
For the headliner: You can put an lightweight cloth on put of your current vinyl, very easy to do and doesn't need to completely to the headliner over. Spray the glue on both, leave it a bit to get more tacky and spray again on cloth stick and trim it.
@fionnmcwilliam80034 жыл бұрын
Re-doing headliners is quite easy for flat roof cars there are some amazing kits online. 3-D printing or making A pillars out of foam and fiberglass could be an option as well you could use carbon fiber instead of fiberglass. I replaced in a pillar this way in a car before it turned out pretty good.
@MrTizzon4 жыл бұрын
if you come up with a plan for those a pillar covers im interested! Same 79 wagon being built!
@greywulf734 жыл бұрын
Use the same material for the roof as you did for the door cards, a bit thinner, maybe and wrap it the way you did the door cards. Not sure if the headliner is screwed into ribs on the roof or if it is spring/pressure fit. Either way, use the existing roof material as a template. Also, you could use black hardware on the door cards. Awesome work!
@genocideul4 жыл бұрын
I say for the a pillars you should do fiberglass and black vinyl wrap. Just lay aluminum foil over the pillars then a couple of layers of glass matt. Trim, drill holes, sand a little then wrap with the same vinyl as the door panels. Will look amazing!
@LaughterIsFunner4 жыл бұрын
Have you considered painting the interior hardware the color of the car? I bet it would look pretty sharp if the hardware was that great yellow, and would definitely pop more than black.
