The two gaskets is because the supplier is expecting the factory to have fitted the spacer! Still no issues with mine since fitting the spacer and a genuine pump. The Britpart oem one looks the same as the genuine and only lacks ‘made in england’ on the casting and the flash hasn’t been cleaned off the seams so hopefully is a good un. I had a spate of duff Delphi ones before this.
@BritannicaRestorations

Or do they expect there is a spacer and need 2 gaskets - one either side?
@jamesbarker4808
@jamesbarker4808 3 жыл бұрын
Yes that’s what I meant, a gasket for each side of the spacer. I’m guessing they expect the vehicle to have come with one from the factory, my 2005 parts book still has it listed on the diagram but NSP so would be interested to know when they were last fitted, the Wolf parts book doesn’t list the spacer but.shows too different numbers for the gasket and the picture is a 200 tdi lift pump!

I really hope the owner has been watching all these videos from start to finish, to see just how much work, time, and effort has gone into this. Nothing has been done unnecessarily. So, when they roll up to collect it and you show them the final bill, if they even wince, shudder, take a sharp intake of breath or try to haggle and get a few bucks knocked off, then you have my full permission to kick their arse from the bottom of the hill, to the top, and back down again. Yes, the invoice is gonna be a big one, but, well, that's what folk get for buying stuff that looks ok from the outside and who don't have a clue about mechanicals. This was more than _''Hello mike, I've just bought a Land Rover...can I drop it off tonight at 5pm...it's not running as smooth as it should, so have a wee look at it like a good chap. Also if you put new air into the tyres, change the oil, wipe the dust off the dash and give it a wash, then I'll collect it tomorrow''._

I had a similar problem 2 weeks ago on a 200tdi Discovery. The pump worked fine when removed from the car but would not pump when fixed back on the engine! I remember many years ago, my mum's Triumph Spitfire was getting harder and harder to start or run right. Hours messing around with SU carbs, plugs, points and new fuel pump. Turned out, the original fuel pump as worn a deep groove through the camshaft! One good second hand camshaft and a weekend of scraped knuckles later, it fired up and ran lovely. There should be a five mm spacer to fit between the two gaskets, NSP on parts diagram, deleted by Land Rover to save money on the 300 tdi. I haven’t had any pump issues since fitting the spacer to mine and it allows you to prime at any position saving faff.

Ive tried both with and without and not noticed any difference. I fitted a new Delphi lift pump to the 110 just last week and debated whether to try fitting a spacer again, but couldnt find one.! I had that problem with a new lift pump. Turned the engine by hand to try & find the point where the lift pump would work. @@BritannicaRestorations Very strange Mike. It's just one of those things. We know not to trust new parts but our brain still puts it at the bottom of the list because it is new. I am trying to think of what could have failed during the time it was off? A blockage? A wasp blocking up the inlet/ outlet with a nest?(wouldn't be the first time) Could the diaphragm had a pinhole in it when it came in and it has gotten bigger as it dried out? Even as I write these things, I am thinking none of them sound credibly. Perhaps a video taking the pump apart?

Mike you spoke the answer, you did the solution, electric fuel pump. I mounted my efp back at the tank before the sedimenter. The other benefit is no more suction leaks along the fuel line, without the fuel lift pump and the Wabco vac pump on the block there's heaps of space to work around the IP.

At twelve minutes in, I was sure that I could smell diesel. A similar thing but different happens when the fuel filter is changed and it is not topped up with fuel before being put back onto the filter body. If the lift pump is a dud and the vehicle has been running OK until the filter change it,s normally because the injection pump has been doing the job of the lift pump. BUT!!! of coarse you already knew that Mike, but not all your subscribers do. So I always fill filters including the fuel filter as you have shown in a previous video, and I test the tickler on the the lift pump to see if its a dud so that if it is, I can still run the vehicle and order in a replacement pump for fitting later. I am sending you half a dozen new laid Mike, I recon that you know how to suck em with out me telling you how. Great video shown with warts an all, thats the best way to teach people Mike. Best wishes and thanks from Yorkshire Rob. WHAT NEXT??????

Hello mr. Mike, how r you doing? Nice video, thanks for sharing! I have one delphi pump also. And I noticed that the manual lever is loose almost the whole course of it. In order to prime, you need to push the lever down and when it seems to have reached the bottom, you should press a little more, you will fell some resistence (if you can't move any further is because of the position of the motor). The lever will move just a little, like few milimeters further down. When you pull the lever back, it will prime. It is an awkard way to work, but it is how mine does. I was struggling with this when I changed my diesel filter. At 14:17 you can see the delphi pump working when you started the motor and the hose to the fuel filter was loose (it squirts a little). Cheers!

I once replaced a fuel line with the only thing available which happened to be some clear homebrew siphon ziptied in a loop,didn't even cut it to length just left the loops in case it was needed in the future,works great and has the added bonus of being able to see the fuel and any contamination + gravity feed on bumpstart! Just had the same on my 200tdi, rebuilt it earlier in the year as part of my series 2a rebuild, I went to start it for the first time, pre-filled the filter and it started briefly before cutting out when I tried to rev it. I then couldn't get any fuel from the lift pump, like yours it worked fine when I stripped the car down? The only one I could get at the weekend was a bearmach unit (old one was an AC) but it sorted the fuel out to the filter which now squirts out lovely. It fills the injector pump as I can get it squirting out of the return on the back of the pump but nothing is getting up to the injectors themselves. The stop solenoid is working and I even tried removing the plunger from it so it couldn't shut off the fuel. Still nothing at the injectors... so it looks like the injection pump is coming off at the weekend to investigate further! I did strip it and fit new seals etc so I'm wondering if I missed something or didn't put something together right and it's come adrift inside hence stopping after running a little, governer related maybe don't know. All good fun I could do without!

I’ve run my Land Rover discovery 300tdi injection pump for 9 years with no lift pump at all. And my diesel pickup hasn’t had a lift pump since new..... 1981. It was actually built in 1980. So it’s been 40 years and no lift pump. Nearly Half a century. The trick is if you want a lift pump. “TEE” after the pump to the tank outlet. With a check valve that is pressurized shut by the lift pump. That way if the lift pump dies the engine still runs. Your welcome for avoiding you or others being stranded in the future.

Sherlock Mike does it again, I had the same problem with the new Delphi pump I fitted to my RRC 300 tdi no way would it prime by hand I too use a 12v pump to fill it all up, although it will run with the delphi pump now but I am thinking of changing it to a oem pump. I noticed when cranking yours turned a lot faster than mine does what size battery do you have and do you think it would fit on the RRC. keep up the good work Mike.

Sounding good great job !! All that work then let down by a dodgy lift pump, typical. That looks like a nice watch too good to be wearing for work or is it a Britpart version ??

It is a real Omega and if you do not wear it every day, why have it in a drawer? 15 years strong many straps but not a mark on the glass!

You need to put the spacer between the lift pump and engine to get the hand lever to work , as 200 tdi ,had same prob

Indeed but how did it drive before? I was told the lift pump was fitted late 2019
@simonrowlands7472

If you set the cam by looking inside the hole so its off cam and push the pump on leaving a gap try the leaver to operate the pump the spacer i made was about 4mm thick, my old pump started sucking air from the diafram and the lift lever worked ok but side by side with the new pump the arms look identical i think the internal ratio's are different and can over stroke the pump and damage it, alot of vintage cars you use shims to set the dosing volume on pumps, i think landrover forgot after the 200 tdi

@@BritannicaRestorations just remembered the injection pump can draw fuel past a duff lift pump and drive like normal only when you break into the pipe or runout of fuel you find it won't prime itself, hope this helps

What a faff! I hate those pumps, had an even weaker one on my series truck.. ended up adding an electric one as a backup. Can you do a teardown of the knackered unit? I'm guessing that the non return valve had blocked the whole thing.. but I'm curious why it died and stopped fuel flowing even with pressure on the tank...

Hi Mike, not really related to this video, but can you replace the rear bearing carrier for the main box output shaft on an LT230 without changing the whole case, or is it line-bored like the main box? Some PSO messed it up good with a sledgehammer (well, he did drive it through Africa, which explains everything).

Sounds sweet mike. Nice job. But it was pretty obvious, from my arm chair, that the pump was buggered. Probably a bit of crap in a check valve, but I could hear the air when you were pressurising the tank, so maybe the diaphragm.

The vehicle drove in on that new Delphi pump and I had the connector off the pump when pressurizing the tank just in case there was a defective valve
