One year ago in ATX I bought my 50th AE z31, and the months prior I watched all of your episodes to guide me on what would be my first project car. It was barely running with a turbo spilling oil as if it was a tanker in the Gulf of Mexico. Now she's fully running with a big turbo, intercooler, poly bushings, new head gaskets, block off plates, new clutch, custom 3" turbo-back exhaust with v-bands, and almost everything else you've named in this video. I'm always excited to see new content from you. I wish you good health and the best of luck with this great build! The Instagram for my z if you're interested is @quarantine_z

@Abogado-Del-Diablo3 жыл бұрын
Hi I really love the build on the Z31. I heard you mention moving to a megasquirt. I would seriously advise thinking about a Haltec ECU. I have a NA2T Z31 with a Garrett gt3076, the Haltec offers so much flexibility fully sequential injection with Z34 coils which deletes the distributor supplying spark. Controls the turbo and fueling which would delete your apexi fuel controller, deletes all the 80’s crap controlling cold start, PCV idle control etc. Also has option of fly by wire, cruise control would also control fans on the radiator.
@importmodify3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice. My buddy already has a megasquirt 3. That's why I mentioned it. What haltec you running?
@importmodify3 жыл бұрын
Thanks and glad you love the build.
@Abogado-Del-Diablo3 жыл бұрын
I use a Haltec 2500 which I know is the most expensive model they do, but does offer the most flexibility and has given me fly by wire using one of the z34 TB’s and fully sequential injection also using 6 Z34 coils. I live in the U.K. and there are only 16 turbo cars left and 29 N/A’s. So trying to get parts is a real struggle, unless you go direct to Japan where around 95% of the parts are still available. So for me the Haltec was a no brainer, it also has a 28 psi map sensor built in, so I have deleted that troublesome MAF. Please don’t think I am knocking the Megasquirt they are a really great mod and work brilliantly, but the Haltec makes turbo upgrades and tuning very very easy. I have watched you build from the beginning, the Z31 is my favourite Z car I have loved ever episode and wish you all the best
@importmodify3 жыл бұрын
Yeah those are expensive. I'm getting one for the rb z32. I already bought the wiring speciality harness with the haltech connectors.
@Abogado-Del-Diablo3 жыл бұрын
The harness makes it a easier job. I had to take the Z31 EFI harness remove all the wires I didn’t want and re-use some of the existing wires for another purpose, such as air inlet sensor, tps and a Wideband sensor. The only complicated part was the crank angle sensor but Scott at Haltec sent me some Nissan CAS layouts and the Z31 is the same as the Skyline R31, which really helped. My Z31 is now in many parts as it is going through a complete restoration and thanks to you I purchased a Prothane bush kit which will be installed when the paint is finished and the rebuild starts, I do envy you as I cannot drive mine yet. But I do also have a Nissan NX coupe that I drive around😁😁

This is an incredible build! I just purchased a low mileage '89 Z31 & watching your vids has given me tons of ideas. I see a lot of asks about the specifics of your setup in the comments. Are you planning to add a list of all aftermarket parts and where they can be purchased? Are you planning to ever take in similar cars from customers to add your mods?
@importmodify2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment, yeah I'm getting alot of people asking me for a a parts list. I'm thinking about putting together a list but most of my parts where bought through eBay so I need to find listing to leave links. I might be interested in building one for a customer for the right price.

Love this series and I miss my z31. Since it is a t-top it will never really be stiff like a modern car. Chassis stiffness wasn't really a big concern to the manufacturers back then.
@importmodify3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know in the video I said chassis stiffness but I was really referring to suspension. Yeah these 80 cars will never be stiff like the newer cars. I can tell a difference with the poly bushings but should be alot stiffer with the hiem joints. Glad you love the build series. Thanks for watching.

@@importmodify I remember way back in the day a Z in sports compact car they found a z31 with a solid roof in a junkyard and actually welded it on to their project car. I'd rather have the t-tops though.

Really got your head in the game! I'm a Z31 turbo lifer. Owned all turbo's -84 "50th", 88, & on my 3rd 87 which is a one owner in excellent condition and all the original window and sales paperwork. Looking for your help on what is available for struts and shocks on this 87 turbo? Has original 3 way in cab adjustable Tokico's(which I know are no longer available). Bilstein's on my last Z31 no longer available, and even heard you can't even get KYB's any longer? I need help on any struts/stocks still available. Car is still completely stock. Thanks
@importmodify2 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yeah I don't see me getting rid of mine since I put so much work into it. It's a one of a kind now. As far as the struts go I don't know of any at the moment that are adjustable. I just opted for the coilovers but you have to weld the knuckles on them. I believe powertrix has the option to send in your knuckles and they provide the service. Techno tuning has the same options as well. Google search would be a good way to see if there is anything available. Thank you for the compliment!
@gearjammer55332 жыл бұрын
@@importmodify Thanks for the comeback! I have seen a few videos on coilovers which may be the way I need to go, but would like to stay as close to stock as I can. I think Koni use to make a "cut a strut" where you cut the housing and insert a perfect fitting cartridge inside and reapply the housing(either non or manually adjustable). Lost my Z guy/shop (Covid) and have to find a new Z guy that knows his stuff. Not easy Seattle area. Know anyone up in this neck of the woods LMK? Thanks

Are you going to put it on a dyno because I really want to know what kind of power a vg30 makes on 11 psi
@importmodify3 жыл бұрын
I plan on reaching out and seeing how much to dyno after I put in the megasquirt because I need to be able to tune the ignition tables that is where I can make the real power.

@importmodify3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I do not. I had mine custom made. I used universal intercooler piping 2.5" for the intake. I'm running straight pipe with custom down pipe. 2.5". A custom exhaust shop can help you with that. If your handy with a welder you can get your stainless steel piping off ebay. Hope this helps.
