Did Pat Garrett kill Billy the Kid?
It was a moonlit night in Ft. Sumner, NM when history tells us that Sheriff Pat Garrett shot down the notorious outlaw Billy “the Kid”. Newspapers across the country quickly reported that the Kid was dead and Garrett quickly put the body in the ground. But rumors spread that the Kid had survived and the testimony of Garrett’s posse was contradictory about how, exactly, the shooting had gone down. Nevertheless, without evidence, the story of the heroic Sheriff stood for almost 70 years. Then, in 1950, an old man from Hico, TX petitioned the governor of New Mexico for a pardon for crimes he committed as Billy the Kid. No one took him seriously, and yet the old man was an exact match in physical characteristics and knew intimate details about the Kid’s life. He also knew details about the fateful shooting the night Garrett claimed to have shot him that had been erased by history. Details, for example, that Garrett had killed his very drunk bearded half-Mexican partner, a claim that has only recently been verified by modern research.
It has been said that the living write history and not the dead, but when one returns from the dead, so to speak, that which was lost to history is restored. This is the true story of Billy the Kid, complete with new evidence that he lived to a ripe old age and died a free man.
THE STORY
In 1882 the notorious outlaw Jesse Evans, a childhood friend of Billy the Kid and a participant in the Lincoln County War, walked out of jail after serving a sentence for killing a Texas ranger. Jesse walked out of prison a free man and disappeared, never to be heard from again. Never, that is, until 1949 when Jesse came out of hiding after almost 60 years to claim an inheritance left to him by his brother.
In the course of proving his identity to a court, Jesse told some amazing stories of his time when he was an outlaw but his biggest revelation of all was that his good friend Billy the Kid was still alive. Jesse led a young lawyer named William Morrison to an old man named not William H. Bonney but William H. Roberts who after some consideration finally agreed to come forward and reveal himself as Billy the Kid. He agreed to this on one condition- that the lawyer helps him obtain the pardon he was promised by the Governor but never received so he could die a free man. You see, Billy the Kid was still wanted for murder and was condemned to hang. To reveal himself was to risk arrest and death. This was a risk that William H. Roberts was willing to take. He sat down with Mr. Morrison and told his story.
This book contains that story. It is the one true autobiography of Billy the Kid. A story that aside from some definite highlights and adventures that one would expect from the Kid, was remarkable normal and focused on his skill breaking horses as much or as more as his skill as a gunslinger. Billy the Kid was, in fact, just a gifted young cowhand who found himself juxtaposed against corrupt officials and lawmen at what became a key moment in American History.
Before one dismisses Mr. Roberts it should be considered that 5 living acquaintances of Billy the Kid, aside from Mr. Evans who revealed him, were willing to sign legal affidavits that Mr. Roberts was the man they knew as Billy the Kid. Further, the new photographic comparison shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that they were the same man. Mr. Roberts' story became the inspiration for the opening scene in the hit movie "Young Guns II" starring Emilio Estevez as Billy the Kid. Also, Consider that Pat Garrett was denied his reward for killing the kid for many months and that only a special act of the legislature allowed him to finally receive it. All of this and more is contained in this book. Thanks to Mr. Morrison each of us can now pull up a chair, sit down across from Billy the Kid, and listen as he shares his story.

They left out the part where Brushy Bill also signed the Declaration of Independence, was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, fought at the Alamo and was the most decorated American soldier of both World Wars. Of course, these are minor accomplishments compared to all the others Brushy Bill lays claim to.

Thank you for covering the truth about Billy the Kid and Brushy Bill finally the story is being told. I’ve been researching Brushy Bill Roberts and I’ve found a photo when he said he worked with Buffalo Bill. It’s extremely awesome when you find things that’s right there in front of your eyes and no one else realizes it. Always love young guns and was always fancinated by Billy's story. My father had told me Garrett did not kill Billy the kid when we watched young guns together back in the day. Growing up in Harlem NY I realized when watching the news and the official story on tv of events in my neighborhood that it was just that, a story. 95% of the time the story's were full of lies or half truths.

Josiah G. “Doc” Scurlock died and is buried in Eastland, Texas. Eastland is close to Hico, where Brushy Bill lived. Seems strange to me that Doc and someone claiming to be the Kid lived so close to each other and nobody ever mentions it. I don’t believe in coincidences that much.

Yes he looked very young because even when he was 21 years old he was known to not be able to grow a beard. And even his mustache was said to be little more than peach fuzz. Mexican women were almost standing in line to get with Billy. They said the picture of him absolutely looks nothing like him. He said he was a pleasant looking very handsome man and looks nothing like this rogue rough-looking guy in the tin type. Is definitely all wrong that he had a very small chin while in the picture this guy has a huge chin. They said the picture looks almost like a different man even though it is known that it is Billy the kid.

I’m 50/50. I really like to believe he didn’t end in Fort Sumner and I hope he didn’t, even if I never know beyond a doubt. His path of “wrongdoings” started because of his fierce loyalty to friends (Tunstall) and wanting justice that he knew would otherwise never be served. From there it was almost totally out of sheer self-preservation. Very good analysis and background from start to finish by both of you

Garrett didn't kill the kid , My mother was born near Ruidoso nm , her great aunt was there at Maxwells when the shooting occurred. She told family members the boy Garrett shot was a Mexican not Billy . I had 2 aunts who were Bennetts who lived on a ranch on the Rio Pineasco and they stayed their grandfather visited with Billy several years after he was supposed to be killed . Also my Uncle Pete Gililland stated his Uncle Jim Gililland brought an old man to the ranch when he was about 8 yrs of age and the old timer stayed for a spell , after Uncle Pete dad and family figured out who he was they took him to Nogales and dropped him off that was about 1935 . I believe my family far more than I believe outsiders .

If we could find 'Billy Barlow' on the 1880 Lincoln County census, then that certainly would explain why 'Billy Barlow' completely "fell off the face of the earth" that night. ...it would explain why Billy the Kid was reported 2 have "resembled a mexican:" Billy Barlow was Half-Mexican! I wonder if any 'missing persons' reports were filed on Billy Barlow??

What do you think Dan about the ears of Billy compared to Brushys ? You are the best investigator and researcher on the subject of the Kid. You make sense out of the mystery and controversy of the Kid. I have been totally convinced Brushy was Billy and then I ran across a program comparing Billy's detached ear lobes against photo of Brushys completly attached ear lobe. Ola Everhart interview convinced me that Brushy was Billy and Dalton was her cousin Jessie James. She explains Billy's front teeth being removed and his relationship with Jessie James throughout childhood that continued until Brushys death. I want Brushy to be Billy but now I'm confused about the ears ?

Pat and Billy knew each other in Uvalde Tx later Pat wants Billy to leave New Mexico. The plan was to kill Billy Barlow and they split the reward. Billy also knew Jesse James because JJ would come to Las Vegas NM and even stayed at the St. James hotel in Cimarron NM. I believe BtK is Brushy Bill Roberts.

It would have been very easy for Pat Garrett to shoot the wrong man because witnesses said after he fired the shot he ran off yelling. He knew it was killed or be killed and Billy didn't see him so he took a shot in the dark it paid off but not with Billy. Billy told him that it's kill or be killed so he was there with a very itchy trigger finger and scared to death anyway.

Here’s the problem. Brushy if he was Billy the kid, would have lived a life of laying low so as to not be caught and hanged. Yet Brushy Roberts said that he was a Marshall, not once, but twice and that he traveled and was in the wild Bill West show, he fought in two wars, rode with Teddy Roosevelt and the rough riders, and it goes on and on and on, about the only thing he did not do was run for president of the United States, and we are to believe that he was Billy, the kid, and no one ever thought any of the wiser? Come on you guys.

One thing that makes me know that that's not Billy the kid is he would never be roaming around barefoot with a knife and one of his hands with strangers around. That was not Billy the kid and Billy the kid had a sixth sense and he would not be roaming around that area barefoot with a knife to get some meat when strangers are known to be in the add to me that makes all the sense in the world why would Billy speak in Spanish to men who were talking to him in English.

Before Brushy claimed to be Billy the Kid he claimed to be in the James Gang and his friend Dalton was Jesse James. There was newspaper article with his picture of him standing by Dalton's bed.

@@corycole3474 The rumors/myths back then was that both Billy and Jesse weren't killed and rode together. Sue Land claims that her husband at 12 years old met the James Gang=Brushy and Dalton. Ole Everhard claimed to be a relative and friends of Jesse and Billy=Dalton and Brushy.

Gale Cooper does an excellent job of debunking Brushy Bill Roberts. He was illiterate, didn’t speak Spanish, and was only eighteen months old when Billy was killed.

Watch the billy the kid episode of wild west extravaganza. Very very well researched. The residents of ft sumter had billys body for a whole day not garett. and many people saw him dead. 48 that historians have confirmed. 48 residents that were at least familiar and at most were friends with the kid. And garret’s deputy said you killed the wrong man, at the door before going in and looking at the body. There was not argument. He details the situation in his book, the DEATH of billy the kid. All the real evidence says garret killed the kid. Now, the residents could have all lied. But the evidence that he was killed far outweighs the hearsay that he wasnt. Brushy bill may have known the kid. Its a good story. But its probably not true.

He wasn't old enough to be The Kid. He did not look anything like the Kid. He did not speak Spanish fluently, he could not read or write well. He was old enough and in the right part of the country to have probably heard stories (true or not) from other old timers from that Era. So these little unknown "facts" was no doubt told to him.

If you have an opportunity ,, you need to read the Saga of Billy the Kid , which was published in 1926 ,, it has all the details that were actually described by Bushy ,, it mentions the African American , The buffalo that Bushy mentioned,, also the Lincoln war was a five day Battle not three days ,, I strongly believe Bushy read this book and went accordingly to what he read ,,

@aurelioperez3517 oh okay, I'm still studying through the topic, I didn't know tye details on it all. So far after listening to Brett Halls stuff I'm more convinced that he was the kid. But little things have popped up so far that's making me question it. Its hard to separate fact from fiction
