In this episode, I will examine William Henry Roberts' account of July 14, 1881, the shooting at Ft. Sumner. I will also compare Roberts' statements with those made by Pat Garrett and John Poe. Additionally, I will do a detailed analysis of all the events relevant to what purportedly occurred that night at the home of Pete Maxwell.

Regardless of whether Brushy was Billy or not what I have learned here is that Garrett was a coward with how many times he ambushed ppl in the dark. And he killed the wrong man twice? What a lunatic. And I'm not debating Brushy wasn't Billy as you definitely have some compelling videos here, and the "in his own words" series is really well done.

Does anyone else remember that INTERVIEW about Jesse James Cousin Ida? She discussed Her Uncle Jesse and Billy the Kid. Jesse actually rode with Billy’s father in The War between the States. Cousin Ida said that when Brushy Bill Robert’s died that her Cousin Jesse cried. Her Cousin Jesse took on several aliases. She called him “Uncle Jesse” as a show of respect. When “Brushy Bill Robert’s” wanted his Pardon and the Governor treated it like “a circus”, why would any “imposter” be so adamant about “his Pardon”. I do Hope that he got The Real Pardon and Forgiveness from our Savior, The Lord JESUS Christ.

Pat does all of that in the pitch dark. Says he knows the kids vioce but doesn't seem to recognize it enough to shoot instantly and instead waits until he get close and waits until Maxwell says that's him. Also I can't believe that Billy was shot in the heart..fell backwards yet according to Poe still had a gun in his right hand and a knife in his left. You get hit in heart. .and you won't still be holding a heavy gun and a knife..you loose grip and function...not keep it.

Brushy Bill was Billy the Kid’ the facts of Mr Garrets story never added up’ the known fact that he already shot 2 other men he thought were billy was damaging enough’ no one in there right mind would let that happen a 3rd time’ he passed off Barlow as the kid and Poe and others could not argue that fact’ they never saw or met Billy’ Pat most likely thought that Billy would disappear and change his name and live under an alias far enough away to go on with his life’ the chance of that likely since Billy was not your typical cold blooded murdering type outlaw’ in fact he was the law at one point and bad corrupt politics put him on the other side of things’ may he rest in peace that he did not get in his life.

No and another thing the story siringo heard first hand of how billy helped a sick old man payed his doctor bill just like the good Samaritan story in the Bible and when the old man heard billy was killed he cried . Only billy got away and I found his trail 100% he got away . Died at 90 years old with a kind wife that loved him , exactly what billy the kid deserved . Period .

Brett what if I told you that I can't prove that Pat Garrett by his own words did not kill Billy the Kid. Ok here we go if you go to Pat Garrett book he said that " We approached these houses cautiously, and when within ear shot, heard the sound of voices conversing in Spanish. We concealed ourselves quickly and listened; but the distance was too great to hear words, or even distinguish voices. Soon a man arose from the ground, in full view, but too far away to recognize. He wore a broad-brimmed hat, a dark vest and pants, and was in his shin sleeves. With a few words, which fell like a murmur on our ears, he went to the fence, jumped it, and walked down towards Maxwell's house. Little as we then suspected it, this man was the Kid." Now from here Pat goes into what he was told by someone else what Billy was doing before they got to Maxwells place. Now let's pick back up where Pat start talking about Billy again. "When the Kid, by me unrecognized, left the orchard, I motioned to my companions, and we cautiously retreated a short distance, and, to avoid the persons whom we had heard at the houses, took another route, approaching Maxwell's house from the opposite direction. When we reached the porch in front of the building, I left Poe and McKinney at the end of the porch, about twenty feet from the door of Pete's room, and went in. It was near midnight and Pete was in bed. I walked to the head of the bed and sat down on it, beside him, near the pillow. I asked him as to the whereabouts of the Kid. He said that the Kid had certainly been about, but he did not know whether he had left or not. At that moment a man sprang quickly into the door, looking back, and called twice in Spanish, "Who conies there?" No one replied and he came on in. He was bare headed. From his step I could perceive he was either barefooted or in his stocking-feet, and held a revolver in his right hand and a butcher knife in his left." Now if you read this Pat just describe two different people one person with a hat who hoop the fence with no gun or knife in either hand. So what Billy hoop the fence took off his hat then head down to Maxwells place? Why would Billy do that? And the other person bear headed bear footed with knife in one hand and a 41 in the other.

Yknow. We have to remember who is writing people’s history. Like we’re finding out that the Aztecs didn’t really sacrifice people but their history was written by people who wanted them to look at bad as possible. His history was written by a man who wanted to be a hero and him to be a villain. And dead. I try to look through different lenses. I was watching a movie and a criminal was being observed and his father said “he stole because he was just hungry and the law wouldn’t leave him alone” and the detective said “maybe he just wanted to steal … (this took place during the depression) and his father in tears said “he stole the chicken bc we were hungry” and the police turned him into a criminal bc they made it impossible for him to even get a job. So he had to steal more. And to this day we only know him as a criminal (Clyde Barrow) So yah … who is writing the story

I keep rewatching these and it makes me think of more points. To people who think they couldn't fake a death back then, people have successfully faked their deaths in the modern world. This is with cameras everywhere and where people commonly have dozens of pictures of themselves, even online. We, for sure, have ONE picture of Billy the Kid, which there was only a couple copies of and at least one copy was with Billy's friend. It was extraordinarily hard to identify people back then, you would need an eyewitness; or one of these very uncommon pictures. There are people in prison for faking their deaths today, it would be way easier back then... If you believe people can fake their death now, but couldn't do it back then, then you don't live in reality

Good presentation. I find your argument for the non-killing of Bill in 1891 to be compelling and though I never gave a lot of thought to it, my understanding of Garrett's lack of personality makes me doubt his story. Given over 50 years to concoct a story presenting an alternative narrative that explains previous testimony, evidence, and written accounts of Billy's death, I'm not inclined to believe the Brushy Bill story.

It makes no sense that a man knowing he’s close to the end of his life would want to be remembered for someone he was not and die a liar . So why would brushy Bill Roberts days before his death try to get exonerated for false crimes of another unless he truly was billy the kid? The kid had to become brushy Bill Roberts so that he could live his life without looking over his shoulder the rest of his day,so it was a necessity of survival to go by another name, or every idiot looking to be the man who shot billy the kid would not be hunting him down. Some idiots think killing an icon whos famous will in turn make them famous and I’m sure Billy the kid aka brushy Bill Roberts would have been thinking the same thing. I think that on his last days he had NOTHNG to lose and the fear of death didn’t matter anymore because of his age so he wanted to go to his maker a clean man and leave behind the truth of his life which was he was not an outlaw but made one by others for personal gain. Everting about garrets story has holes in it. Then you have other people all telling the same story and the only ones not were pat Garrett and company.

First of all , sederwall , graves and Sullivan proved brushy's story correct and Garretts to be false on the jail escape , how did Roberts know judge Parker's words when they were not published until 1974 and brushy's were published in 1955 and no way would poe go to white oaks to pay an old drunk bum 1 dollar for info , when the mc sween widow lived in white oaks she had money and lots of it that's why poe was in white oaks to collect a pay off . Cause Garrett knew where the kid was the whole time , him and the kid were family and worked together for many years after 1881 the kid took on the name bill carr and helped Garrett with the fountain murder investigation in 1896 and there is more .

DNA Confirmed that Billy the Kid actually lived until he died of Natural Causes in his late 70's or early 80's. He made an effort to reveal the truth, but wasn't believed. He literally lived h8s life, God Bless him. That had to take some restraint for a young man with reasons to retaliate. Garrett must have made arrangements with Billy to make his story stick. He wasn't the turncoat everyone thought he was. DNA is a valuable tool to validate or invalidate a vast number of History subjects. Beth Bartlett Sociologist/Behavioralist and Historian

I don't know who was killed the night of July 14 but I do know that Garrett met his fate much the same way as that person (?) Garrett ambushed that fateful night in 1881. He was bushwacked by his two travelling companions sometime after 1905, just on the outskirts of Las Cruces NM, and since there were no witnesses the jury believed the self defense claim and the men were found not guilty of murder and set free.

This was tried in the early 2000s, by two former Lincoln County Deputy Sheriffs. However, the powers that be in New Mexico fought this every step of the way by filing a series of lawsuits and legal motions. The plan was to exhume the body of Catherine Antrim in Silver City, the body in Ft. Sumner, Brushy Bill Roberts, and John Miller. Joe Antrim's body was donated to science upon his death, so he's not an option for obtaining DNA. This is all detailed in the books, The Dirty on Billy the Kid by Steven Sederwall and Billy the Kid: Cold Case - Investigating History's Mysteries by W.C. Jameson.
