She was probably doing laundry, cooking, watching them when Ruby was gone, dressing them for school, doing their hair, protecting them from the parents, etc. So when she left, Ruby's severe neglect and abuse had no intermediary

This episode was handled with so much care. Kendahl did a great job explaining the backstory and sarah have such great insight on the inner workings of narcissistic ab*se. I’m so sorry to the Franke kids, the Schauer kids, and anyone else who suffered through child ab*se. You didn’t deserve it, you deserved to be loved and cared for in a safe environment. I hope things are better and you’re able to get the support you need. As a queer ex Mormon with a verbally ab*s*ve father this hit close to home but I could never imagine everything these poor kids went through. The oldest is so brave to get away and the 12year old is too for escaping to ask for help. I hope all these siblings are able to receive the love and care they deserved all along.

I was also an abused child and I wanna know what you thought. There were a few issues I found where they were like 'that probably didn't happen,' and it made me feel horrible. Like when they said 'cps didn't laugh' when thats literally happened to me. I'm tending to welts all over while I hear my mom and cps making jokes. I don't think kids who weren't abused in the same way understand. It's just not possible.

I am so sorry you had to go through the horrible abuse, you didn't deserve it at all. i understand how it can feel invalidating to hear someone say "that probably didn't happen" when the same thing has actually happened to you. I usually hear these words from my abusers or enablers (and it feels horrible but their intent is to make me feel horrible so...) I don't actually know how it feels when a random person says it (i think it would make me question my reality more than when my abusers say it). i think in the podcast they were just trying to give the cps workers benefit of the doubt as many times outsiders who are there to help do act friendly to the abusers to seem unharmful (but of course there are also many times when they actually end up enabling the abuse even more). people who were raised in a respectful safe home would never understand what people who were raised on survival mode went through. Where i am right now mentally (too tired and done), i just feel happy for them... they were actually cared for and given so much love that imagining this kind of abuse is almost impossible for them... i know the pain too well and i am happy they didn't have to get hurt like that... so it's like... you know... at least some people did live a good life even if i was not one of them.

I can't imagine how bad the eldest daughter must have felt when she left her siblings at home with their parents :( even if she went full no contact with them she still loved her siblings and the guilt that she felt for leaving was probably insane.

my parents are addicts, not the same, but still a form of abuse and a horrible situation. And i cant even explain the guilt i feel for not being able to save all of my little siblings from the home.

As someone who has a similar childhood/fundie cult parents and had to go low contact.. You often come to the conclusion that you can't make your siblings realise how bad things are, they have to get to that conclusion yourself, you can do your best but there's certain times where no amount of effort will change their minds because they've been raised in such a way. Wishing her and her siblings all the best and lovely healing.

I’m happy that Sarah emphasized that children are not extensions of their parents. There’s so many cases like this where the mother demands complete control over their children. It’s like the mother sees the kid as just another vessel for the parent’s will. Motherhood/pregnancy is just a way for them to produce more of themselves. Kate Gosselin, Ruby Frankie, and Lori Vallow all seem like well known examples of this phenomenon but to different severity levels.

Loved hearing your input with your background and upbringings. Just so you know the neighbor that called 911 was a man actually and his wife! They waited for cops and ambulance to arrive on their front porch together and got the child food and water. I believe it is public record so be sure to listen if you want to hear the full recording. Very heartbreaking to hear the neighbor get emotional when the operator asks about the boy’s injuries and restraints. The moment he realized the boy was held captive and intentionally hurt.

Sarah's story about Thanksgiving with her aunt and seeing the "person my mom could have been" was so deeply personal and affirming for me. My mom was an alcoholic and I would see on and off her potential to be a full person whenever she would have her periods of sobriety

I’m so glad you guys decided to speak on this situation because most people online that their thing is being funny, they think they can’t ever be serious. It’s super important for everyone to have actual conversations about things like this because it’s the only way these kind of things will stop. Obviously it’s not going to fix abusive people but it’s going to reach a wider range of people that may have not otherwise known what abuse looks like in their lives. there’s a lot of wild nuances to being a child in an abusive home. i was kind of a Munchausen syndrome by proxy case with a brain tumor and received insane levels of verbal abuse and gaslighting, to the point i was being torn apart so bad that i was incapable of believing there was anything safe for me outside of the abuse. had a sister who even tore me up for not wanting my abuser in my life because its better to have at least “one parent” than none at all. i was trapped. i was being further disabled to be emotionally incapable of leaving for fear of what would happen to me and my sister if i did escape. people pull the “why didn’t you leave if it was so bad” thing all the time but it really isn’t that simple. you’re made to believe that this is normal, you’re isolated from healthy relationships so you don’t see that you’re being deceived, and you still crave the love of your abuser because “they’re all you’ve got”, and to save yourself would be dooming your siblings or your parent ( who has weaponized their incompetence to be your burden ) - so you stay and don’t question it. i feel for these kids. i’m so glad y’all’re talking about these things and allowing awareness to spread through this channel. and to anyone who might be reading this in an abusive ( familial or otherwise ) situation and don’t know what to do, i promise - there is healing and peace on the other side. be safe but be prepared, because abuse can only go so far before you crumble. you deserve freedom. don’t let your abuser convince you otherwise.

@@laurielmaoo i fortunately am. I cut off all communication with them because I started to realize that they were manipulating/abusing me. They are both covert narcisists, and they won't accept me being trans, so I went from the golden child (good grades/listened to them) to the bad example. I really relate to the oldest 8 passenger kid in that way. I just did whatever to get their love/survive until I couldn't anymore. I hope it showed my little siblings that they can also get out one day. I live with my former step mom now, and it has been better.

Trigger warning ⚠️ (Child abuse) This is so sad. I'm glad both Ruby and Whatshername are in custody. I hope all the kids and *anyone* else affected by this abuse get all the support, resources, and healing they rightly deserve. I fully believe that the child who escaped and ran for help, saved their, or one of their sibling's lives. From the abundance of evidence showing escalation during the family channel years, to now. And now, hearing the details of the arrest and current abuse. I just cannot imagine a world where this had any other ending than a death or arrest. That baby ( I know they are around 12, but idk that Ruby ever treated them like a baby deserves) is so strong and heroic to have taken such a huge, scary risk. I can't imagine how hard and stressful it may have been deciding to try and then doing it. I'm really proud of them, even if thats a bit weird of me to say being a total stranger adult. It's just such an unimaginable amount of mental strength.

I hope they get sentenced to the max. I work in corrections and a guy was found guilty of child abuse. He used religion as his “reasoning” for severely abusing his children. The mother is in trouble too bc she would record the abuse. CPS had been in and out of home as well. The father was only sentenced to 13 years in prison. Still waiting on the mothers trial.

With reference to what was said about the children that are ‘in distortion’ being kept away from the others, this was something that came up when the children were taken by CPS. It was reported that Ruby actually said to CPS that the two that were starved and had the wounds from being tied up should be kept away from the others in protective custody. She truly is absolutely gone in the head.

1:06:51 Mormon here, just as a heads up no one is allowed to film inside the temple. Any footage you see online of people doing stuff in the temple is unauthorized. There is some footage of the insides of temples that is sanctioned by the church but that is usually taken during open houses when the public can tour the building before it's dedicated. Unfortunately the Illinois law is only if the child is in 30% of the content or more AND only if the content makes ten cents or more per view. Which is very unlikely apparently. The podcast Psychology in Seattle talked about it during their Duggar deep dive. It seems like the law might be a reaction to complaints or someone suing a parent, that could explain why the stipulations are so weird. But who knows. If I a kid is in 100% of the content but the channel only gets 9 cents per view it doesn’t apply. Or if they’re in 29% of the content but they get 15 cents per view it doesn’t apply. Hopefully it’s a small stepping stone in the right direction though.
