There one thing that is a theory about Vegeta...He actually saved the world from the very day he appeared on Earth. If he never showed up, Goku would not have the need to do what he did to become stronger. Though other strong opponents existed, Vegeta was his goal as he mentioned to Krillin that he must fight him again and that fight did happen during the Buu Saga. He was always taking a shot at Vegeta that he is stronger as he took that shot after he exited the hyperbolic time chamber during the Cell Saga.
