There one thing that is a theory about Vegeta...He actually saved the world from the very day he appeared on Earth. If he never showed up, Goku would not have the need to do what he did to become stronger. Though other strong opponents existed, Vegeta was his goal as he mentioned to Krillin that he must fight him again and that fight did happen during the Buu Saga. He was always taking a shot at Vegeta that he is stronger as he took that shot after he exited the hyperbolic time chamber during the Cell Saga. Goku is stronger because of Vegeta because he realized that there is a similar being of his caliber to always test his strength as Vegeta trains to be stronger than him. Because of this rivalry, Goku musters up the strength to save the world even through his son as he was once stronger than Vegeta as Super Saiyans.
