I’ve watched every vlog and I congratulate you on your drive, work ethics, and achievements. Your efforts and home are stellar. The one thing I love is that you are doing your thing your way. There are many paths to the same destination, but following yours rather than someone else’s is priceless. As the weather improves I well understand the urge to switch to outside chores... but, there will always be more to do and changes to make... that’s life... take it from this old farmer. Wishing you all the very best, Edward

I can feel the drywall blues just watching this video. I have drywalled and mudded a number of rooms myself and there's really nothing that compares to the frustration and regret in taking on this kind of work yourself. Gib coat is a new word up here. I use Tuff Hide, a spray on Level 5(smooth) no sanding and a primer for paint. My one man build needs all the time I can save. I use metal reinforced paper corners as they don’t need screws that buckle and mess with the mud. Seeing those metal perfed corners reminds of what my head revealed when I fell into a wall corner after my older brother tripped me in the hall. Funny how 48 years hasn’t faded the memory of metal corners and the stitches.

Did a house and a half of drywall and finishing, besides the repairs and touch up work I've done elsewhere, and you'll never hear me say I'm an expert on it at all, but once you get a level of the house done, you'll feel you've accomplished so much..and no matter the pull of the other work, use that time doing it to think and plan that front porch, that stairwell, as the drywall work becomes almost automatic.
@JohnDoe-np3zk5 жыл бұрын
As the hillsides collapse, with risk of the solar array that blocks the view tumbling down, and the other steep hillside an issue, and you're planning a front porch? He should call the inspector he missed a drywall prior to taping inspection. Time to check in with building dept.
@niceguy21715 жыл бұрын
John Doe, he knows the hillside needs some attention, but the solar array is in no danger..either is the house, so yes he can think of other things. He knows he needs to backfill the hillside after he puts up a retaining wall, and hopefully he contacts the country or state in his area, and see's if they have any of the temporary concrete medium dividers that they use for construction that are broken..as they often give them away, just for picking them up. He could lay those against it and backfill behind them, and then re-dig a trench in front to keep the small ditch system he has built to keep water away from the house.

When we used to do that we would mix the mud to where we could roll it on then come back sooth it down with bedding knives. After it was dry then sand down the walls with lighter grit sand paper then touch it up where needed, but to each his or her own.
@KevinJohnson-fx6wq5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know the feeling of working inside, wanting to be outside, but we all need to do what we need to do, lol. Looks good. Such an oxymoron where the dry wall has such a textured finish and just taping that has such a smooth finish. It took me about 3 mos. to paint my 400 sq. ft. apartment the first time. Started painting and found wall paper underneath from bubbling, had to strip it down and ended up skim coating most of it to get a decent finish. There were also unfinished patches and such. Most would say, 'Why?, but have felt much more comfortable here since finishing it. Thanks for sharing.

I know the look your aiming for with the skim coat.. you don’t want to stand back and see an obvious 8x4 sheet size in your wall. Why are you skim coating all the gib surface? A gib sealer paint will effectively do this. It has filler in it. In NZ we typically mud the joints and screws. Then sand. Then gib seal. Then two coats of paint with either a roller or sprayer.

That is how it's generally done in the USA too. Tape and mud 2-3 times fanning out with each coat, sanding between each coat, then primer the entire space followed with 2 coats of quality paint. BUT with that said, sometimes there are different ways to accomplish a task and this is his home to do it his way.

Just 3 thin coats on seams and screw holes is all that is needed. Each time with a bigger knife to feather out the seams. Sand off the high spots in between each coat. Paint, done. Semi gloss doesn't show imperfections as bad as high gloss does and cleans pretty easy.

To save you a bunch of money on paint. Spray or roll on PVA primer. It's a bright white, designed to seal the spackling and the paper on the drywall. This will keep the walls from sucking up your paint to where it may take several coats depending on the color. I did my whole house with PVA and left the ceilings with that only. Took less color paint on the walls and saved me money.

Let him do it like he wants to folks. While very few in residential construction shoot for a level 5 finish on drywall it’s not unheard of. We do it all the time in commercial buildings with long well lit rooms and hall ways. Brother just do yourself a favor and rent or buy a power sander when you sand this level of a finish. If you don’t rent Porter cable makes a good one but it’s over $400 or if you go Chinese get a WEN. That and a good shop vac with a dust deputy will make such a difference in the speed and cleanup. As another gentlemen mentioned after you tape and fill the factory and butt joints wetting down the mud, rolling it on with a paint roller, and skimming it down with a big knife will also save some time. Hang in there man your doing a great job. Drywall finishing is about the only part of building a home that I’ve learned not to do myself but looking at your progress in skill level already, you got this man.

@JohnDoe-np3zk5 жыл бұрын
That is in no way the "best way" to do it although I do agree with the paint sheen "matching" better. Spray orange peel is easy, takes literally about 1/20th the time of what he is doing, and hides imperfections way better.
@seagnatprepper96135 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDoe-np3zk youre right , its not the best way …. the best way is a smooth coat of hardcoat over all the drywall and then "glaze" the hardcoat with drywall ….. but that is the most expensive way to do it ….. and it takes way longer than regular drywall …. but if youre worried about imperfections and not doing too good of a job on the drywall finish, then textured drywall finishes are fine ………….. I would and did take the extra time to do smooth hardcoat - no textures - and it is GREAT
@JohnDoe-np3zk5 жыл бұрын
@@seagnatprepper9613 personally I detest "dry wall" to begin with. I use Hardipanel cedar pattern now. Concrete board over fiberglass insulation with the Kraft paper for where you needed drywall.
