Amazed at the ignorance of the keyboard mechanics here. First, this is clearly a cold start on a carbureted car, which is why he had to pump the pedal to get it started AND why it took a few tries to get it to fire. Doesn't sound like he's running with a choke, but that's fine. I ran daily drivers without them for years. You can't go back inside and let them warm up, but they'll still start and run just fine if you know how to start them and warm them up that way. I usually idle them a little higher than that when I've got a big cam, but I also run 4 speeds. Nothing wrong with how he has his, it's just a different preference. Sounds great! I love 327's! Accelerator pump doesn't effect idle. In fact, when he stepped on the gas without the motor fumbling and falling on it's face that tells me that isnt the problem. I'd be willing to bet the step up springs are too heavy and that isnt allowing him to pull enough vacuum at idle to keep it running without giving it the pedal. Oooorrrr, it's just cold and the electric choke isnt set proper.

I love your build, I love all 327s especially and sbc period. But to everyone talking about pumping the pedal.... and the good Ole days... yall don't know what you are talking about.... This car needs a fuel pump. The diaphragm is weak. Any sbc, from a 265-400.... dosent need a choke, and you shouldn't ever have to pump the gas pedal except maybe one time if it is cold and dosent start right up. EVERY small block chevy I've owned/tuned especially 350s and 327s, have always started cold on the 1st-6th crank depending on how long its sat and if started every day it will crank ONE TIME and fire right off. I REPEAT, IF YOU'RE PUMPING THE PEDAL, ESPECIALLY WITH A MODERN CARB, PLEASE PUT A FUEL PUMP ON AND SET YOUR TIMING AND VALVE LASH. I don't care if I have a cammed engine or a stock 305, I promise you'll very very seldom see me touch the pedal cranking, why would I want all that fuel in my cold combustion chambers? Or in my oil? Or fouling my plugs? Oh, I forgot to add, I never EVER run a choke, just feather it like this man did in this video. He's not wrong, he just needs a fuelpump. Also, dial back your fuel pressure too. Even mechanical pumps. Especially with a Edelbrock, vic was a Ford man, early Ford psi is 2lbs. Chevy is 6lbs+ in some cases. Holley is the way to go for power, Edelbrock for daily/cruisers. I wouldn't worry so much about dialing it down for a holley. All your power comes from Trans and rear end gearing anyways. You can take a stock 350 you threw the Saturday night special book at with stock bottom end internals and with the right drive train and chassis combo run mid 6s or less in the 1/8th mile. Get er done boys, This has been my tedtalk Until next time, keeper between the ditches

That’s exactly why I like fuel injection , or an aftermarket EFI kit . If that was a 20 degree morning ,, this whole video woulda been trying to get it to start , forget it idling . It did sound good , but definitely something off a little . But I’m not a gear head , I just love cars and old Chevy engines . You’ve got a sweet project there , keep it and enjoy it !!

I once had a 75 Chevy pickup, small block v8. originally had a 2 barrel carb. I swapped it with an adapter and put an Edelbrock 4 barrel on it. Had about 200 thousand miles on it. Was living in Crow Agency, MT, where it gets damn cold. One 20 below zero morning, couldn't get my wife's fairly new fuel injected Taurus to start. It would turn over but wouldn't fire. Chevy pickup fired right up. Drove her to work just fine. Came back and jumped the taurus and finally got it started.

Man! Working that gas pedal like a bass drum on a drum kit! Yikes! Lol. GASOLINE FLOOD! HYDROLOCK! lol Two good full pumps is all she should need, if your accelerator pump(s) are in good order. That’s all my 68 Stang gets with a very radical cammed 347 stroker. Lol. Sounds good though.
