You said it... I got hit by a car years ago while riding through an intersection in Perth (driver didn't give way and T-boned me)... it shattered my patella to smithereens ... 20 min after the accident I was in the ambulance to RPH, then X-rayed, operated on, 2 days in hospital, physio as an outpatient and it didn't cost me a cent... and the surgeon did a bloody excellent job too!!!!

Make sure you follow your surgeon's advice about when to start using the arm. It would be a bummer to mess with the bone healing. I've broken my collarbones a total of 5(!) times and have had 3 surgeries. I've always waited 6 week before getting back on the bike. I'm an ER doc. No more crit racing for me.

I am so mad for you. Mad about how messed up our country is (re: medical stuff), how messed up that crash was. fuu..... I broke my collarbone (first ever break) at 45. Snapped in two places, total bill was over $85k but luckily my insurance was excellent and covered most of it. Major ptsd watching some of this. :D The weirdest thing for me is the lack of nerve sensation, even years later and I have 2 plates and a bunch of screws so I have a fun metal bone. whee. I didn't choose to have it removed. Now, 5 years later it's starting to feel a bit more integrated. Anyway, not sure if you got any hardware installed. Very sorry Claudio.pleased that you are on the mend. That must have been a huge shock for you. What a shame. I only ever raced once and came 3rd but that was riding a recumbent. I just wanted to feel the crowd euphoria. It's intense and so much prep. Never thought about crashes and pleased it never happened. I've been over the bars a number of times and it's not good. Recumbent is different but you can't do crits. When you are young , you mend quickly. 💫

I broke my humerus bone in a bike crash 1 month out of 3 right now. Doctor said no surgery just a brace and let it weld by itself. Spent 200 on a plastic brace they replaced 3 times my cement cast . I had employment insurance so at least i get paid 75% until i get back to work also the plastic brace and pills were covered by 70% . I have spent 300 the most. It was painful the first week but I am lucky it was not that bad financially. I live in Canada

Ah, sh_t. Sorry. You are a good man, Claudio. I don't think I would be as forgiving of being run into like that. I hope SPOT comes through. Supplemental insurance is honestly mandatory for US bike racers nowadays. I did my collarbone almost exactly a year ago. My total medical bills were over $45K and I DIDN'T even have surgery (literally just didn't want to pay for it). I'm telling my story because I have the best insurance available to me (as part owner of a small company). The total cost for my "family plan" is over $25K/yr (I pay a bit over $10K out of pocket, the company pays the rest) but I still ended up on the hook for over $13K. It would've been over $16K if I haven't spent a crazy amount of time contesting most of the bills they barely paid (or straight up didn't pay - they literally rejected the entire cost of my ambulance ride). Anyway, don't be me, with my gross lumpy collarbone and monthly payments to two separate hospitals. Get extra coverage if you race. Oh, congrats on the bike being undamaged. Should've said that first, right?

That is some luck! In 2016, I broke my elbow and required a plate & screws.... I skipped the ER visit as it would have just been a waste of time and apparently I saved myself some cash (although my insurance would have covered it). I did the urgent care the following Monday morning and was able to get images done there ($350 visit). All in I was about $40K, but you know who is really well paid? The anesthesiologist! Good luck with the recovery!

I fell off my bike in May during a ride and got a fracture on my shoulder and I'm still healing from it, I'm lucky I didn't need surgery but I have the same insurance as you, the worse one, and those doctor visits and PT add up. Also that MRI cost a lot, ~$1800 since insurance doesn't pay jack. Had to do a payment plan for that.

Heal up quick dude! With 2 laps to go when that 2-man attack gets caught you are sitting in the top 5 wheels, you have momentum, and the road is open in front of you. Why not be aggressive and attack? Even if you're tired, you wouldn't have to do hardly any power to roll off the front there. The swarm is coming, so why not get ahead of it for almost no effort? Seems like a little more aggressive riding could be a good addition to your racing when you're healthy again imo

So the spot insurance didn't cover anything of that? What is it good for? All of this is direct result of the race. I remember at my race crash ~15 years ago what bothered me is all the separate bills. A bill for the ambulance ride. A separate bill for the skull CT (I lost consciousness, my helmet saved my mind probably), then another for the hip and knee X-Ray, another for the shoulder X-Ray, I cannot remember exactly. The various radiologist doctors were part of different factions and I was wondering if there are any bills left, when they would stop coming in. The health care system is a complete screw up! It's not even good for a bad joke. Be happy you haven't ended up like Phil Gaimon ($200K bill). I'm so happy I'm a EU citizen and can retire there.
@1cb2bc

wow. tough. that looked like a big displacement so surgery warranted. do your rehab. I broke mine bad years ago and it was tough for me. as for your race - good job. my eyes popped a bit when you mentioned your weight ! you work much harder than me :-> one thing I noticed is your heart rate was pegged high 170’s , like close to 178 for much of the race ? which seems crazy enough i’m not even sure it’s reliable. so when you’re like , ok claudio is getting tired on the last lap - apologizing - I’m like , are you kidding me ? I’ve no idea how you could keep your bpm that high for that long. lastly, maybe less so in a 3/4 race, but at those high speed , high effort races you’ve got to be glued on wheels to take advantage of draft and not get drained. but technique and field must be dialed or else crossed wheels and you know what eventually comes next. even more dangerous when you’re tanked and just trying your hold on. I guess all that is obvious. except your heart rate which you never mentioned. I’m a little older now but I think if I dangle close to 180 bpm for a while , I’m going down man - end is nigh haven’t used heart rate in a long time but that’s my recollection. I’ll have to re-confirm :->

Dude. It is 1000% the guy that hit you's fault. He wasn't paying attention to what was ahead of him, he was looking at his computer or his front tire or something. 1000% his fault. Do not be so forgiving. Stuff happens, but that guy taking you out is not the normal race stuff. Realistically you can't sue anyone in a race for something they did, because by racing you assume heightened risk. And I get it, stuff happens, people crash. But your crash was totally unnecessary and never should have happened. Absolutely ridiculous that he took you out.
