This is absolutely one of my favorite songs and performances of all time... I’ve sat on that bunk and looked out those steel bar covered windows and tried to keep myself from myself and talking to myself to not just go absolutely crazy and rip another inmate to pieces and then be held there even longer!!! You really need to be an animal to survive prison and then you need to somehow become a human being and act like a man and be proper over night... some of the habits that we developed in prison are never lost and they are always with you...no matter where you are or how far to the good we go...we don’t walk up blindly to a corner and I always know who is walking behind me. Fantastic song from a great singer/songwriter! Dave Coe!!

Excellent comment and I felt every word brother! I've done more than 20 years in Cali prisons. Got myself a T # when I was just 19, I'm 45 now and have fewer people to relate to each passing day! Life is like doing time our release day is coming, technology is the new ball and chain! Love and respect wood!

i met him at the long branch saloon in the stockyars of oklahoma city on his birthday he was so drunk he couldnt hardly play but it was funnywe partyed down this was in 78....30 yrs later i took my wife to back stage music in tucson where i played regular to meet him...he was playing rap for a bunch of collage kids who didnt even know the legend he is...it broke my heart i told him i wanna hear some loneliness in rubys eyes before i leave here tonight... and he looked like a old animal ...he is an old animal lmao ...only donnie young (JOHNNY PAYCHECK) is any crazier than D.A.C...but he is also one of the greatest songwriters that ever lived and he wrote hundereds of them...they are claiming he wont get into the hall of fame because of his womanizing and racial stand points but i will make sure he gets in ...all that has no baring on his musical ability and we will get enough signitures to make them let him in....he deserves it...i have everything he ever put out and some that never were put out and to me they are sacred

Otis Chandler I love David Allen Coe and his music is very special to me from crazy Mary to dancing bear and they wonder why I lost my sense of humor. We learned how to play his songs on the six string and saw many suns set and rise while we poured out them songs like we was the ones being sung about. That was around 40 years ago and I don’t have those guys in my life anymore for many different reasons but damn I do miss those sessions. Well I’m going to get down off here cause I see a semi truck painted black and white and is says David Allen Coe and the Tennessee Hat band on the side of it and look there it’s old pusher Betty driving it and she didn’t have no braw on and she said Hey Dave come here quick there’s something you gotta see that man has got a dancing bear tide up to that old tree...Thanks Brother

This is not a jail cell. However it is a prison in Tennessee. I have a video of the whole concert. I dated Diamond Jim Richmond and traveled with them for over 10 years. Very talented bunch, still are. Fred Spears on lead guitar, Bill Clark on bass, Donny Soaps on drums and Jim Richmond on pedel steel. You can catch Diamond Jim and his band around Dallas at times. They are called 3 fools on 3 stools. Also The Tennessee Hat band gets together every year for a reunion show. All except for Bill Clark. He passed away this year from cancer. R.I.P. Wild Bill

Mickey Newbury, who wrote this song, does his own version ... far more preferable than this. I just do not care for the way that DAC changes the lyrics of most of Newbury's beautiful songs. He has a good voice, granted, but he alters too much of the original material from the way it was originally conceived by the 'Mick.'
