For you youngsters out there, I was raised in the 30s and 40s when things were tight. My mother always cooked in cast iron and LARD .Now before you give it a thumbs down, during WWII things were rationed and butter was not available. We bought a pound of lard, shaped just as a pound of butter. WITH a capsule of yellow coloring which we mixed in the lard. That was the butter I was raised on. I’m 89 and cook with cast iron only and YES I USE LARD. It does add a new plus flavor to your food. Give it a try. Refrigerate or not doesn’t matter. It will not go rancid.

Bring in a straw bale or 3 and break them up to pack around the sides of your tent. We used wall tents when going into remote lakes to ice fish for weekends at -40 to -60 and it makes all the difference to keeping the cold out. then run a slack line from one end of the ridge pole to the other, or shorter, your preference. this way you hand your clothes up high to dry out and stay warm for the early AM getting dressed time.

You can control cooking temperatures by adding few stone slabs between pan and stove, Also for cooking make ghee, its clear butter its easy to make and it will never go bad. Even in hotter summers it can be left stored in tent if you dig small hole on ground, ice box size is enough and if you just put small plywood cover it stay near 10 celsius. For those who also have plans to keep tents on place for years, use some stone/clay etc to make stove bigger, those metal boxes get hot fast and also cool as fast without fire, when theres some stone and masonry surrounding it itll keep temps, just leave top mostly open to keep that great cooking stage working fast. If you make great masonry covers for stove it can be used as oven after fire is gone as it keeps temperature really good
@georgemccurdy46836 жыл бұрын
That sounds kinda new to me.. And I want to be sure I'm understanding you. Please, tell me how to surround stove with masonry clay..? Can I use cement? Thank you. ✌
@LazlaTheFallen6 жыл бұрын
@@georgemccurdy4683 Yeah, i think clay works too, any stony substance will take heat and keep it. You can add metal scrap to quicly take heat but it also cools fast where as stone slabs, clay and cement (make sure it takes heat, most will do fine but direct flame contact will break or make it frail. also many so interior should be metal). Any "stony" substance they use on ovens and fireplaces in house will work 100%, and like i said it will make it very heavy so its no more movable. You just simply surround/cover your metalstove with bricks or stones/boulders, and then add something like clay or cement to make "full armor" around it. If you have time add some metal scrap/shaings etc to mixture to make it take heat faster, but also it cools a bit faster then. As long as you have some of original metal stove visible it will emit heat to tent but with stone covers it will be warm for 8-12 hours after few hours of burning. Much depends on size of the stone you surround it and insulation of tent and outside temperatures, i live in finland so we have -20c winters also and it works here. You can search youtubne for how to make oven/pizzaoven/fireplace to see principles. Ps. sorry for my bad english at somepoints and that i have to explain this long way

Great stove incorporation idea. I am recently looking at tents and have found Tent Shop to be what most people are talking about. Heating the 16 by 20 tent I'm looking at with them has been one of my main concerns but with a little bit of stone and clay work, I can see how that would really make a difference. I have also been looking at easy insulating solutions as well. Glamping at its finest.

Army vet here I don’t know if this is been mentioned yet. But I know a lot of our tents have a multiple wall system to build a thermal barrier and seeing how your tent is a single wall tent. Perhaps maybe you should look into making a inside canvas that can attach to your support beams on the interior of your tent so you can have an air pocket between the cold air and the warm air from your stove plus would make your stove a little more efficient. I hope this helps 👍

What you should do for the very hot frying pan is to get an old pan rest from an old gas stove top burner and put your frying pan on top of it so it doesn't come in contact with the direct heat of your stove. You could stack them higher to regulate the temperature in your frying pan. I did that when I was in the Boys Scouts.

If you are concerned about the heat from the stove making the cast iron pan too hot for cooking. Use a couple 1/2 in steel bars (simple right) to lift the pan with a space that will reduce the heat. I would also recommend a Dutch oven to play with.

Good work. Keep in touch. Another thought, what if one prepped the bread and pan with butter 1st. The inside face of bread will warm, crisping while we’re slicing salami and cheese. Flip the salami into pan fry. Turn the toasty bread faces up. Lay on the cheese. Voila, the salami will give grease and flavors even as the cheese melts above.

I survived 34 below in my camper this year. Here's what happened to me all in one night. It was so windy it blew my camper door off. My wood stove clogged up and smoke the house out. The regulator for my ventless LP stove froze up. My backup LP heater decided not to start.. this all happened at the same time at 4:30 in the morning. Sometimes it makes you wonder why we live off grid, but it's all worth it if you survive.

When I was a kid my dad took me fishing with my mom's cast iron pan. We cooked some fish in it, then my dad flipped the pan over on the hot coals proclaiming "That's the best way to clean that!". As I watched the pan start to glow red, I thought about how much care mom put into handling that seasoned surface, so her cooking wouldn't stick. She wouldn't even let me wash it with strong detergents. Needless to say, dad caught hell for his shortcut when we got home.

Stuart McRae I noticed I was giving him the business end as I was reading you're comment . When I was a young girl there may or may not have been a similar incident involving my Granny's cast iron Dutch Oven as for me I have no such knowledge of any such activities , that's been my story and I'm sticking to it !!! LoL !!!
@nedkline8866 жыл бұрын
i can see the inside of that pan , it is not smothe, my daughter had one to and said dad i have ruined this pan so i took it down to my work shop and spent an hour with an orbital sander and 60 grit paper till it was as smothe as a baby but, washed it real good with soap and water and sos. then applied a very thin layer of olive oil, very thin, wipe it out 4 times, put in an oven at 400 for an hour, repeat as many times as you have time. after using rinse with hot water while still hot and apply a thin layer of oil before storing. gosh they look beautiful all black and oiled up. it will take some time before it turns black again after grinding, but it wont stick, if it does , put half inch of water in the pan , heat , and it will come clean with minimal effort. be very careful on electric stoves, gently heat cause if the middle of the pan gets to hot the metal will expand and the pan will warp. good luck and take pride in you iron pan, they are like family, i have my moms and love it.
