Get a lot of questions and some think I'm lying about the temperature (no, I never have). If the title says -30, it should go without saying that that's the LOW for the trip...the temp fluctuates, of course. So I made a video for the top 11 FAQs I get about winter camping: *1) If it's so cold, why can't you see your breath?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *2) If it's so cold, why is there slush on the lake?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *3) Why aren't you melting snow for water?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *4) What is the temp inside the tent?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *5) Why winter camp at all?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *6) Why aren't you wearing snowshoes?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *7) How do you poop when it's that cold?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *8) Aren't you worried about carbon monoxide from the stove?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *9) Aren't you afraid of animals attacking you? Where's your gun?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq88 *10) How you you power your devices?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 *11) Why don't you use a floor?* kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5DRo3qLqcprmq8 Hope it helps clear some things up.

Friend I love your channel. I have had this video saved as a watch later for a while now. Maybe since month's back. I loved to subscribe because you treat camping the exact way I would and take a book along. That is pretty bad hearing about your friend's mishap. I asked some ice fisher's in PA once what was the thickness of the ice and they said 3y inches deep. I still didn't feel very comfortable and walked back to shore. If anything trust your gut. 😊. Have a good Summer 🌞.

Bro I've been ice fishing my entire life and always took every precaution possible, until last winter I was off grid with snowmobiles at a lodge and went to get firewood down the lake because there wasn't much good jack pine close to camp. My buddy who was with me at the time didn't have a float suit and I did, he ended up going through an otters breathing hole it was late January as well, I turned around and he was neck deep and his legs were entangled in roots and sticks from the bank... Anyway lets just say he was lucky my adrenaline was through the roof because he weighed nearly 100lbs more than me not including the water soaking in his clothing, somehow I managed to yank him out without going in myself... Cheers stay safe :)

Oh no! Jon! I'm 64 years old and have carried a pocket knife for 58 years. Started out with a Cub Scout knife in 1966 then graduated to a 6 inch folding knife for protection though High school (rough school)! Bought my first Swiss Army Knife in 1976 (the Tinker model) and never looked back. I know that its a personal choice. My survival teacher said, "Survival is not an exact science, its an art, and each person should be left to their own expression. It would probably seem strange to you, but I have carried the exact same thing in my pockets for those 58 years. Handkerchief, wallet, Zippo lighter with a spare flint and wick tucked in the packing of the fuel tank, Swiss Army Knife and a 72 inch boot lace. And I always carry a Canadian made LED Mini Maglite with a set of AA lithium batteries that will function up to 30 degrees below zero, on my belt. I cannot begin to tell you how many hundreds of times I have been glad to have those items on me or how many times my friends have asked to borrow something that I'm carrying! Mind you that is the bare minimum that I carry! Super good video, miss seeing Erin with you.

Back in the late 1980s we were making a trail from one lake to another to build our camp. I was walking on the ice and went thru with a brand new snow ❄️ mobile suit on. It smelled like swamp water. Days before when were at the camp that we stayed in, the snowmachine went thru the ice at the bank of the creek. The ice auger in the carrier stopped it from sliding in backwards and sinking. I am to old for that crap now. The night sky shots were amazing. A wood stove is a man's best friend in the cold.

I've found steam coming out of the ground a few times here in northern Alaska. I dug down and found spruce bows from forestry operations that had been buried. They had been breaking down (rotting) for some time which causes heat from a lack of O2. So I cleared out the other debris and made my bed there. Keep fairly warm that night. Basically like a compost pile getting hot.
@LostLakes2 жыл бұрын
Pretty amazing it can generate heat in such temps

Could the steam at 0:40 have been decomposition? I saw at least a couple other spots steaming (not just log piles). Hard to imagine anything out there producing that warmth with so many nights in the -30s this winter.

Howdy Jon, just having a coffee before I head out for lakers myself this morning and it was a treat to see an upload from you, a great way to start the day. After 50 years on ice in Northern Ontario, I have seen many spring holes etc.. with some incidents in almost all ice conditions. I always tell people no ice is 100 % safe ice despite it's thickness. That's a marten, I have trapped them for many years and only seen a couple live ones. You got lucky, nice capture. Depending on the size of that void in the logs it's hard to say what animal could be denned up, it could be anything from a skunk to a small bear. I have seen some yearling bears den up in some pretty small root tip ups. Was cutting wood off a pile of logs left behind by loggers one spring and I rousted one out from under the pile. Scared the shit outta me. Anyway, those lakers aren't going to catch themselves. You guys keep doing what ya do and stay safe. I look forward to the next episode and I'll yak at ya when I am older.

Wonderful as usual. Thanks, Jon. Would you share with us the current ice conditions you encountered when your buddy went through? I usually use a 50% rule in Minnesota, but now I’m reconsidering that. I assume the ice will be 50% thinner in some spots than what has been reported or what I’ve found to be the “average” as I venture out. So I won’t go on foot until there are 6” of quality ice, figuring that in some places there would only be 3”.
@LostLakes2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Sean :) It was pretty similar to what I showed in this vid...maybe 6" of black ice on bottom, a foot of white ice and slush on top, then water and snow...so pretty terrible. That's a good guideline though

Very good chance that the steam you saw under the logs is indeed a smouldering fire underground. If it’s a recent forestry cut they likely burned their slash piles and just buried them. They’ll burn for months and months. I was working at a gold mine project in northern Ontario and the several of the piles they burnt early in winter (Dec/Jan) caused flare ups as late as June and July when they started the earthworks again. With that said, another awesome video!

Thanks for this Matt! The odd thing was that the top logs appeared to have no signs of charring which leads me to think decomposition. Others are saying a bear den or water lol...total lack of consensus on this one

Epic John loved this one. Whiter camping is a mission. Great idea to have camp set up. What boggans are those ? They look easy to pack with enormous amounts of gear lol a downfall of mine... pretty wild someone going through the ice that heavy snow causing water to well up not good freeze up and possibly recent pressure crack may have been reason. But just wild this time of yr still. I have seen some really trash ice on super cold years however so you never know.

Thanks a lot Ted! Just the good ole Pelican Trek 60....they're great but the way I see people haul freight toboggans so easily, the more I think that's the play. Yeah it's such a wild card, scary thought if it happens alone out there

Thanks a lot Tanks shield! On the subsequent trip it was actually unresponsive in the cold...then somehow started. But I can always message Erin on the ZOLEO (sat comm) to meet me (usually I'm parked within 90 mins of where we live). And worst case, I'll keep hiking to keep my blood warm and head toward the most trafficked roadway around :)

so fish heads are a good meal, clean & put into pot of water add sliced onion salt pepper & then a couple of potatoes, simmer until cooked. it is almost like soup, nourishing & does taste darn good. Try it.

Never seen a fish cleaned with an ice auger before. The whole time you were doing it I was thinking about the time I cut my foot on a freshly sharpened auger blade. A plus for ingenuity Jon. I cleaned a 3 pound walleye with a pair of those little stubby scissors that come in a cheap first aid kit when I was working at Points North Landing in Northern Saskatchewan. You gotta use your imagination when you are in the bush sometimes and that's always been a fun part of it for me.

The steam coming from the cut down tree, maybe there is something hibernating under there or perhaps there is a pocket of decomposing Plant life that's giving off heat. That's got me curious. I absolutely loved this watching this. The beauty of the surrounding the roar of the wood stove. The beauty of the night sky. It entrances me. I love how you always say thank you to your catches before you dispatch them. I would love to experience cold camping just once to say I have experienced it. Maybe one day. I did have to watch the part where you were gutting and preparing your fish from behind my hands 😱 Thank you Jon for sharing this. Thank you.

I have fallen thru lake ice, while walking confidently. No picks. Wearing carhartt coveralls, multiple layers of clothing and boots. Nothing like ice cold water will make you think faster and with dire certainty. For a few feet all I was doing was breaking ice. I got lucky, I was by myself in a howling wind. On shore, my clothes started freezing up, I was beaten red all over and breathing hard but very alive. Measure the Ice thickness, don’t be overly confident

I saw your comments about the Norvegian G-stove in a earlier video, and I agree with you. That stove is fine down to just below freezing or in a smaller tent its fine down to minus 25-30 celcius (I have a tentipi nr 5 and thats ok at 20 minus probably lower too). What I love about the G-stove is the accessories, the water heater, the owen... Love your videos, you capture the feeling of being outdoor in harsh condition as well as the nice sunny moments so incredibly well. I miss Erin, to see her splitting wood is a great inspiration...
@LostLakes2 жыл бұрын
Greatly appreciate that Bo! Erin will be back out with me this weekend and I'm equally excited to have her back out :) My thoughts exactly on the g-stove. Beautiful stove, but a bigger one is better suited to a large, non-insulated tent like this. The accessories are super cool though

I got cold just watching this Jon. I think there was a bear under that tree with steam coming out of it. One whack on the top of a fish head should be sufficient. Sorry, I had to add that four whacks just seems like over kill unless you’re trying to tenderize the fish. Love your videos, you’re a good man my friend.
@LostLakes2 жыл бұрын
Hoping to check out that spot again to investigate further :) Lol I hear ya John. But one time I whacked a pike good and took it home. A few hours later I put it in the sink to rinse. It was somehow still alive. Not the kind of nervous system reactions you get after death...alive. I'm still ashamed that I let that fish suffer, so some extra bonks are for good measure :)
