After blowing the head gaskets in the '88 motor in my '93, I put this 'running' '93 IDIT motor in it. It worked... but ticks. I'm concerned.
If I can get it to not tick, I'd be plenty happy with it. Feels fine... but sounds horrible.
I've already driven perhaps a hundred miles with it, too, about 30 towing a trailer, so it doesn't seem like it's going to instantly blow up or quiet down...

2.5 years later: She still runs just fine. Somehow! She still ticks just as much as she did two years ago; I've done little to the engine other than add oil every ~3K miles and beat the **** out of it! Somehow, despite everything, she had no problems with towing a 5th wheel at ~70 back from Portland this summer, pushing EGTs above 1K constantly, and coolant temps in the 240 range! And she still seems to be doing about the same!

So... still running. Added 2 quarts of Marvel Mystery Oil and am just driving it. Yesterday, I drove 80-ish miles with a trailer at highway speeds; 40 unloaded, and 40 with 3 1/2 tons of hay on it. I friend of me was with me with a '99 ram 3500 with a Cummins and hauled a similar trailer with similar amount of hay... up a 6% grade I beat him, but not by much. Still dropped to 50 at the top and I was slowly losing ground and would have had to downshift into 3rd if the hill went on too much further(remember- in this rig, more RPM = more torque). Need more boost, that's for sure - I'm only pushing 10-ish. Might get a WW2.

Pretty sure it was/is lifters. It quieted down a *ton* with MMO in there, and is only really noticeable at idle now... which might be an injector imbalance issue. Do an oil change and use 2 quarts of MMO(BTW, if you aren't already, use a FL1995 (7.3 PSD) oil filter - total capacity of a 6.9/7.3 IDI with one of these is 11 quarts of oil). Give it 500 miles, and change it again, use 2 quarts of MMO again, and then change that at 2500 miles like normal. I believe in changing oil at the 2500-3K mark; don't try to extend it. It's not good for the engine(remember, it's not the oil breaking down or additives getting used up - it's simply how much crud can be suspended in the oil).

MacRobb Simpson ok thank you very much. I use the fl1995 filter already. I just put a 088 turbo kit on her about 100 miles ago and changed oil when i did that. I have the turbo back out because im redoing the wiring harness because the fuel shut off seleniod wire is broke somewhere so to start the truck i need 12v jumper to the seloniod. But when i ran it i noticed the noise similar to yours. That it was making before (even with turbo kit installed) We have low sulfar fuel around here so mabbye i should try injector cleaner or something first and crack each line when its running to see if it's a bad injector. I will try the mmo and do what you said. Thanks very much for your help.

You're probably the expert on these engines (over me), but if it's from down low it would prompt me to check ASAP. You can't ever be sure if some ya-hoo didn't torque something down enough.

I'm definitely concerned, but it's obvious that this motor hasn't been apart in many years. Not likely for a bolt to *just* come loose from undertorquing it; stuff like that usually comes right out within a few thousand miles.

More or less; the lope and clatter. There's a knock to it, though, that other IDIs(and I have... a few) don't. Honestly sounds like a lifter over-pumping and the valve tapping against the piston(these valves are square to the piston, so what would most likely happen is either wear out the guide or eventually have a nice valve-shaped impression in the piston).
Fuel tanks are more complicated than you think…
