@@BillMcGirr That must have been pre-COVID. All ammo went up 2-4 times soon after COVID caused labor shortages. It has been only recent that ammo has come down, and only a few calibers cam back down to pre-COIVID prices. The 9mm was one of these, probably because the US military buys it, as well as the 9mm semi auto handgun's popularity.. I have bulilt a very large ballistics file which lists 35 handgun and 25 rile calibers, with a total of over 3,500 entries. Each entry has a link to the site that sells that ammo, as well as contains the info on the ballistics info, that ammo's price at that website, and its availability, plus more. Who knows, 10mm for the longest time was obscure, and its seen a resurgence. To get much out of it you have to reload it too. I've heard that factory 357sig is a bit on the light side. Two thing about 357 Magnum: 1 - It makes substantially more gains when put into a rifle than a 9mm or 357 Sig would. A bolt-action 357 Magnum starts to get close to a 30-30, but with the extra benefit of being chambered in your side-arm for logistical ease. 2 - Without feed-ramps, 357 Mag can also have more exposed lead at the tip, which makes for consistently better deformation on impact. That said, I prefer 9mm overall.

@megastick93245 ай бұрын
Which is exactly what it was designed to do. Emulate a 357 mag, 125gr from a 4” bbl. That’s exactly what it does. The mag has the option of up or down loading for different uses, the Sig does what it was meant to do, one shot stops, like the mag, it was the gold standard for decades and this gave people an option to have an auto with the same ballistics. People say “ it’s too snappy” , well they wouldn’t like the mag either. Self defense isn’t bullseye shooting, and the mag was renowned for its one shot stops with a hit, pretty much anywhere. Not instant death, stopping the fight. The Sig is the same on the receiving end, as designed, so a little snap and hit will end fights just the same. And it’s not like one is shooting boxes of ammo in a gunfight, that hit is what counts, not how many you get in the 10 ring at 25yds the fastest.

@@megastick9324 I’m not knocking the .357 sig at all, I wish it were more economical and as easy to reload as straight wall cartridges. I’m a fan of 10mm myself, and certainly don’t think 10mm, .40s&w or .45acp are difficult to shoot/too snappy. I really like the .357mag compatibility between my revolver and lever gun and can train with cheaper .38spl. Balistically .357 sig can be loaded much hotter than any 9mm +++P+++ (insert 9mm fanboy made up chrono numbers here) can achieve. Same with 40 and 10mm as all can achieve 500lb feet of muzzle energy without it being a compressed load or requiring special gun/modofications to tolerate the chamber pressure. As far as hits on target go in decensive shooting, that’s what matters, not bullseyes but torso or head shots, next would be pelvis shots. I think people should carry what they can shoot well under pressure- even if that’s a 22mag. If people are getting shot and want to continue fighting, give them seconds and thirds.

The argument for the .357 magnum revolver is the same as for a classic 1911 w/ just 7 or 8 rounds: with good shot placement, anything in excess of 6 or 7 rounds is just extra weight. And I've never heard of a revolver having an FTF or FTE, or having "magazine issues" either. Of course, if you need to throw more than a dozen rounds down range in your house or in a public place, you damn sure better put them all on target, or your misses could be disastrous!

Your video points out exactly what I have been telling him for some time now that while the .357 does have a little more penetration and slightly better terminal performance however, the slight ballistic advantage does not outweight the 11 more rounds in just one magazine when compared to my H&K. I must say, he did relent and picked up a Sig P320 in 9mm not long ago (the ones that are supposed to have the fix done to them to keep them from randomly going off when loaded). @Misplaced_Acres19 күн бұрын
The "flashy thing" of the 357 Mag is adiabatic compression. The immediate colapse of the wound cavity acts like a piston. The sudden rise in pressure heats the cavity's air. It then ignites unburnt propellant dragged in by the bullet. This happens mostly at close ranges. (Note the unburnt propellant dissipates over distance.) This is how diesels burn fuel without spark plugs.

MHO and Analysis FWIW: The difference in these three calibers every time somebody compares them is this : Basically bullet development stopped on the 357 magnum 20 years ago because everybody is focusing on auto loaders and most people that are shooting the 357 magnum are shooting hard cast bullets or just plain old traditional hollow points like Remington, green and yellow box. Sure you can get some thing like a gold dot for the 357 magnum, but that doesn’t really take it vantage of the extra velocity, and they haven’t continued to develop to find a way to build a hollow point that takes advantage of that extra velocity in a way better than it did 20 years ago. Enter the 357 Sig, it’s a really good blend of a shorter casing with a faster, burning powder and a modern design bullet that performs well, and has as you pointed out more ammo capacity than the revolver but it has a downside as well… Ammo is not as easy to find and it’s not as cheap to shoot. Then you have the 9 mm, it’s maybe 10% down on the 357 Sig 15% at the most, but it’s significantly cheaper to shoot… And a lot of people shoot it better because it has slightly less recoil. Also, you’ll never find a more available round than the 9 mm. You can find 9 mm anywhere, I have found 9 mm in places that didn’t have 22 long rifle. From my experience, it’s the most popular caliber out there worldwide at least in 2024. That makes it for me an easy choice for a carry to go with a 9 mm. Now I could see if you were somebody like a state trooper and you had an endless supply of free ammunition to go with the 357 Sig. with routine practice I don’t think the extra recall would be a problem for a big, burly state trooper and you’re not gonna have a problem buying or affording ammo. 158gr 1525 fps from 8.375-inch barrel. That was the original "magnum" in the 1930's. That performance is exceeded slightly today by Grizzly, Buffalo Bore, and maybe DoubleTap on a load or two. Underwood is far less in rimed revolver performance than they publish. Although saami might have reduce pressures somewhat (that point has been filling forums with long winded debates), it doesn't mean every company that loads for .357mag must load to absolute limit performance for every single projectile stuffed into that casing. They have a lot more to consider. If people want magnum performance from .357magnum, it's easy to achieve that (commercially) with a few boutique brands. Otherwise you'll have pretty stout, but nowhere near max potential from the big box companies. Does that influence the market opinion about a given cartridge? ABSOLUTELY. Does that move people away from it toward something more voluminous or popular? I think it does. Consider the reputation the public has over .38 Special vs. 9mm. The former is more powerful but you'll rarely find that opinion, mostly because of how industry treats these cartridges on average.

The only thing this video proves is that people aren’t made of building materials and inanimate objects don’t fight/shoot back. As a former crime scene investigator, I have seen the 9’s lack of ability to stop determined felons in a timely manner leaving them the ability to cause havoc with hits that may later be fatal. In reality, with “good shot placement”, larger / more powerful duty rounds simply end things more quickly with less rounds expended.

I shoot and handload all 3 calibers. They all their own advantages and disadvantages. The 357 mag does a lot better with long barrels, but has limited ammo capacity. The 357 Sig is great for deep penetration and higher ammo capacity than 357 mag, but 357 Sig is much louder than 9mm and 9mm is great at having the lowest cost for ammo. If I had to choose only one it would probably be 9mm with 357 mag in close 2nd place just because from a carbine length barrel 357 mag has almost the same muzzle energy as 30-30 Winchester or 7.62x39 and 357 mag is a lot easier to handload than any bottle neck calibers.

"The newest study of police shooting accuracy in deadly force encounters reflects the experience of just one municipal department. But to whatever extent the findings can be generalized, the picture is indeed a disturbing one. Researchers analyzed 149 real-life OISs recorded over a 15-year period by Dallas (TX) PD. In nearly half of these encounters, officers firing at a single suspect delivered “complete inaccuracy.” That is, they missed the target entirely. In 15 incidents, the total number of rounds fired could not be determined. But in the 134 cases where researchers could establish that figure, they calculated the hit rate, “incredibly,” at merely 35%. In other words, more than six out of 10 rounds fired were misses." 9x19 wins overall. Why? Much cheaper, yet pretty much on par with .357 SIG (or .40 S&W) when using higher loads. High capacity, easy to find and/or reload, huge number of loads & bullet types available... The .357 Mag. difference is undeniably there, but IMO isn't worth the lower capacity, nor the bulk & weight of an adequate revolver (or the mule-like kick if you shoot it from a light one). (Don't even mention Desert Eagle... ;-))

The Remington 125 grain SJHP 357 Magnum is still unmatched in one-shot kills from any handgun cartridge ever, with over 60 years of data to prove it. Yes, a sacrifice in capacity is important, but with each bullet you fire, each over-penetration and miss will have a lawyer attached to it.

As much as I love the idea of .357 Sig, it makes more sense to just go with 9mm. Concerning .357 mag, you can get crazy hot loads for it if you have a beefy enough revolver, so it has a lot more ballistic potential than the other 2

Hmmm….it has less recoil, more magazine capacity and costs less. All good reasons for the FBI to select the 9mm for “struggling shooters.” Not good reasons if you can actually shoot the 357Sig.
@robnorth85145 ай бұрын
If capacity is what you’re after, then no. If you are off the mindset that less penetration for EDC self defense is better, the 9mm is best option. 357sig is the most expensive and can be difficult to find. All 3 calibers are prone to over penetrate. You are responsible for where your bullet goes even after you hit your target. Personally to me, penetration isn’t as important as the energy deposit on soft targets. All 3 you just tested have the same bullet size and can the same bullet type. With the exception of the 357sig. As I stated, they can be hard to find unless you buy all your ammo online. Places like Midway, Underwood ammo and Brownells (just to name a few) are good places to shop.
