260 cfm with that valve size and that port is very impressive. Alot of 2.02 aftermarket heads (Ford or Chevy) won't do that.

We were fairly happy with the cylinder heads. The next big restriction is the intake manifold. It's making 315ish at the tires with my ported and modified kegger.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. I have watched this video at least 10 times, taking notes, so I can do this to my heads. It will be baby steps for me, though. Nice flow machine too, wish I had one :-)

When you find out the pinch keeps necessary air speed at the floor and opening it allows it to be siphoned away by the dogleg. Good video. The chamber was worked over I see too. I get the impression jegs,speedmaster & others all sell the same head...only diff is the price. The valve job buried in the chamber ootb and that's the first thing you need to address to have decent .100-.400 flow numbers. The information you state is absolutely correct. I get practically identical numbers. 225cfm ootb and 261 worked with a 1.94 11/32 valve.

They aren't too bad after being reworked. It would be great if somebody made a decent aluminum set that used the factory style valve train.

It goes to show it's always best to work with a trusted performance cylinder head shop. No matter the brand it's best to have the heads gone through to be checked out for issues, and or needed improvement. I never run heads right out the box no matter the manufacturer. Best to spend the extra money to make sure things are right the first time.

No doubt about that. Tim has shown me some factory issues even with some fairly pricey cylinder heads.

Thanks for sharing your experience and also doing it a way that we can better understand how your chronologically approach each improvement. My experience lies with Vortec SBC heads which really come alive with some porting and had zero experience with 360 magums even though I owned one in a Dakota RT as a younger man Lother than the 5.2 was a torque monster and way too much for that truck). I was surprised how much tech like MPFI and Roller Cams they adopted well ahead of GM. Very interested to learn what these can do.

I’m am beyond jealous you have a machine shop worth a damn I’ve been through so many here in Florida I do it all myself now but I’m not this good I can’t believe they got 250 at .500 lift my eddy heads don’t flow that till .550

Just want to share another important rule regarding VJ even before porting: Assure that your Guides are good first. If your machine shop fails to mic valve stems and only checks the Guides by hand and says...."That Guide is good", you're in the wrong shop. My prerequisites to a good cylinder head/engine shop.... • Head machine (Not a Head Bench) • Cutters not stones • Use of Dial Gage cutting Seats • Inspect and sharpen Cutters whenever necessary • Clean up lowest Seat 1st. Bring others to exact depth • Intake Seat (if applicable) over-laps Exhaust Seat • Use of Concentric Runout Gage • Use of Guide Honing bench • Flow Bench equipped If you're going to spend the time, labor and money on good flowing heads, seek the most reputable machine shop known for producing winning and/or HP/Race engines.

Best video I've seen so far porting a Magnum SBM head. Good technical exploration and explanation. Did 93% at throat kill numbers? I was taught 91-91.5% Street, 92% Race. Did you also spot face or reduce length of Guide in the Bowl?

i'm glad you kicked in that little statement about valve lift,more sometimes does nothing,duration same way,more sometimes is not necessary either, super high lifts just makes high dollar parts kiss each other at inappropriate times, like 7200 in high gear,you really know what you are doing on that piece of equipment,carry on,i just spectate now

Excellent video. Lots of proprietary information given out. To see tangible results instead of anecdotal or speculative is awesome! Where is he located? I think he could do a lot of good work to my RT heads.

Chattanooga TN. He is going to be making more in depth videos on his channel to teach people how to port their cylinder heads. I did the grinding on these just follow the math and it will work. Ask him on his channel if he would want to. porting heads is very time consuming and very expensive to have done

@@thomasbeyer Yea I know its pricey. With that being said I think heads are the make or break of an engines potential and can only be as good, or limited by what they can do. Granted all other components are chosen to compliment each other and installed correctly. On a side note, I am tuning my 408 with HP tuners and am dumping fuel with AFRs in the 10s at idle. What is a safe amount of fuel to pull from my table to correct that? I am completely new to tuning and don't know if 1% 5% or 10% is a safe "baby step".
@thomasbeyer
@thomasbeyer 3 жыл бұрын
If it's that far off at idle I'd be thinking take 20-25% to start with.

With back cutting the valves do you have any issues with reversion?
@thomasbeyer
@thomasbeyer Жыл бұрын
Not on the intake side. If the air speed is up high enough it will still be stuffing air in while the valve is closing. But don't backcut the exhaust

So you have 1.92 valves? Would 2.02 even make a big difference? Great video by the way!
@thomasbeyer

1.92 no I don't believe the 2.02 valves will help I believe the pushrod pinch is the limiting factor on these cylinder heads

@@MP-pz9oe IF ITS SMALLER than stock,hell yeah,you wouldn't believe what 8 pounds off the 273 crank did for me in the summer of 1969.had the 3rd fastest car in kc mo,then,it was a formula S cuda with a 273 blueprinted engine with fenderwell headers,in the 1/4 it turned 12.82 ,but the 1/8 times were damn impressive,that's where i made all my money,1/8 runs or stoplight to stoplight,made more money street racing and drag racing than i did on my job,the headers were good for 60 horse,just by bolting them on,but the 273 came with floating rods and super lightweighted cranks,solid lifters,went for a large carb,went slower,585 cfm carb was matched by the factory,so i used it,changed the rear axle to 3.91 gears it went even faster,think lightweight and use them gears if you are racing or what out of the hole jumps,think light

Unfortunately there won't be a part 2 to the head porting. We did a good valve job and tested the exhaust and I believe they flowed 185 we didn't do any extensive work in the exhaust ports just cleaned up around the guides and let it rip. Now I never made the second video because my buddy is supposed to be starting his KZbin channel his channel is (the porting room) on cylinder head porting so I was going to leave it alone let him pick it up and use that for his channel and he's yet to do anything with it. But I harass him every time I see him to get started.
