Can I just say that this romantizing of Italian mafia is annoying to no end? I am from Italy. Every year we tune in to the radio to listen to all the names of people killed by mafia. Our 2 most famous judges were literally blow up by mafia. Even in my town, that is small, we know not go in certain bars and shit because they are ran by organized crime. And I know nobody takes these kind of movies seriously, so there is no real damage here, but still. Idk, it just annoys me a lot.

I'd be perfectly fine with taking real world elements of fear and terrible things into a fantasy perspective and exploring them that way. It's no different than enjoying slasher or horror. But the issue is when people think that it at all parallels real life or find value in the reality of something so terrible. Mafia is just glorified greedy corporatist thugs who work outside the law. It's a lot like the glorification of gang culture overall. It's horrific and depressing, but I don't find an issue in exploring those ideas or an alt-universe version of it in entertainment media. The only time I take issue with anything portrayed in media is when it's based on real circumstance and undermines, devalues or changes the lesson learned. I got no issue with horror stories, I take issue with horror stories based on actual murders and real victims. That's when something is perpetuating romanticism of a terrible thing. Using real world examples as a basis for a fictional representation blurs reality from fiction. If there was a movie based on some terrible well known mafia member and it tried to picture them as a sympathetic character or glorified what horror they wrought, I'd absolutely be on the side of shutting that down, because it's no longer artistic expression, it's glorification and misrepresentation at the cost of victims associated to horror.

Person from Poland here to give our perspective on this movie. We absolutely hate it and are ashamed that it became a thing outside our country. the author of this tragedy is horrible both as a author and person (also interesting thing Laura Biel is obvious self insert of Blanka Lipińska, look at their initials XD). Together with Białowąs (which is absolute douchebag that makes bad movies and then goes on a meeting with critics to prove them wrong in the most pathetic way) they make disasterous duo. It is especially hated considering that in Poland things such as sexual abuse and discrimination based on gender are controvelsial topics right now and this movie that basically makes parody out of this things is REALLY not helpful in this important to us debate.

I dunno, writing romance is hard. Writing healthy relationships is boring because a story generally requires a problem for it to be interesting and it's easy to make a relationship disfunctional and build a story off of that. Put them together and you get horrible relationships.
@musse48693 жыл бұрын
Romance is often not seen as being able to carry a story, but more of a subplot to other stories. Soo if you're only going to focus on the Romance you generally needs something to spice it up. And a good and healthy relationship is generally not considered drama filled enough to carry a movie.

I think I found a way to make this work. It still won’t be a good movie but it’ll be better than this. Since they’re not interested in much character development anyways, make them already married. That’s it. Make Laura a newly minted mob wife who’s into elements of BDSM. That way you can have the sexy partners in crime and rough romantic kinda thing. That’s it. Make her actually in charge and have all the actions be part of the game they constantly play with each other. It works much better if the two are equals pretending to have a power imbalance because that way Laura is never in any real danger. It’s just part of their kinky dynamic. Boom that’s it! I'm so sorry you had to deal with all that nonsense with the c*pyright bl*cking. I remember having to deal with those headaches back when I made video essays on YT. I stopped and switched to podcasting because I got so tired of it, but I'm happy that you're able to keep making them. I was lucky enough to watch the original video when it was up and I'm glad that it was able to come back, despite outside forces trying to stop it. Thank you for making it.

Can we talk about the "She's not like fairytale heroines" thing for a minute? First off, you really just pat yourself on the back for writing better than centuries-old fables for children in your adult story. Second off, most fairytale heroines are NOT characters, they are the means to get to the moral of the story, you can use those stories as a building block and trim some of the magical nonsense to make a coherent narrative, but you need strong character(ization) to make people care. Third, those stories are usually set in medieval times, when women had limited agency, and you set your story in modern day and went out of your way to create a scenario where the main character has limited agency to create this false sense of empowerement.

I could honestly listen to anything if it was narrated by Quinn Curio. Like seriously I haven't watched this, Gotham, or Riverdale and yet I've still seen all of Quinn's monologues and I LOVE ALL OF THEM. There's just something about Quinn's voice. It's not "soothing" like Morgan Freeman, instead it's awake and alert and snarky and clever and genuinely engaging in like every respect. Please keep making more of these, however long it takes. I WILL LISTEN TO IT ALL. EVEN IF IT'S 50 HOURS. I WILL TAKE TIME OFF FROM WORK AND BINGE IT.

Came back this video and realized that it's been 2 years since you last posted, Quinn. I remember finding your Harry Potter stuff, subscribing and then this video dropped. It was quarantine, I was burnt out and dropped out of school, in a unhealthy realationship (not this unhealthy, thank god) and basically just watching youtube all day. I makes me sad that you might not post again, the few videos you have are dear to me. This '2 years ago' is really fucking me up. I don't know how old I thought this video was, in a way I felt like it was much older. I have flimsy memories of the last 5 years of my life wtf . I rambling but it's really hitting me . Was I even still in that relationship when this video came out? It's hazy, scary how little I seem to remember

Most of the videos I've seen on this movie don't actually dive too deeply into the whole issue of WHY lack of consent is an issue in this movie. It's really nice and refreshing that you talk about the issue from both inside and outside the movie. Like, verbalizing how the issue of Laura's consent is presented as the antagonist is SUCH a good take! I love it

Poland still has it better than Austria! It's been years and yet to this day, when people think of Austria, the first thing that comes to mind is Josef Fritzl and the incest dungeon he kept his daughter locked up in for over 20 years. Trust me when I say No amount of apologies or diplomatic 'rehab' can possibly undue the damage that inflicted upon their nation's reputation!

They can’t copyright a review if there’s barely, if any footage, the footage belongs to them but a review is freedom of speech. At least that’s my point of view, then again the creators of the movie might be complete arseholes.

@@tiresome6124 That’s different then a movie review, freedom of speech is a human right, they can’t legally take that away when there’s no footage, and music copyright can also be dodged if you remix it enough, a lot of people done that on KZbin and got away with it.

The worst part about this genre of 50 Shades clones is that ... they're not even particularly good at catering to people with those kinds of kinks? Like, I'm a kinkster. I've read, written, watched, listened to, and otherwise consumed or produced some pretty intense smut, some of which includes stuff like non-consent (or compromised consent), kidnapping, slavery, brainwashing etc. The thing about that is that there are only two ways to make those work without being super creepy and gross about it: Either you present them as consensual roleplay within the context of the story, or you take it seriously, but add some level of abstraction - for example, you set it in an alternate universe, possibly one with fantasy or science-fiction elements. 50 Shades wisely circumvented potential consent issues, but by trying to depict an actual BDSM relationship without understanding how those work in real life (Christian Grey's dom mode is indistinguishable from his regular persona and all scenes are based around HIS needs and desires, with all pleasure Ana gets out of their playtime feeling almost incidental; there is no separation between their sex life and their out of bedroom interactions in general despite the fact that they're not in a pre-negotiated 24/7 lifestyle D/s relationship and Ana clearly doesn't want one of those), that franchise paved the way for half-assed knock-offs like 365 Days to blur the line between kink and abuse even further. As a result, you get all these really questionable "erotic" stories that don't have the catharsis of a real BDSM scene, the melodramatically exaggerated tension of classic bodice ripper novels, the shameless unreality of hentai-esque fantasy porn, or the fun danger element of grimy erotic thrillers. You just have borefests like this piece of shit - nothing like healthy kink as practiced by consenting adults, but JUST grounded enough that they end up reading like genuine endorsements of abuse, filled with beautiful people, some nice scenery, and outrageous displays of luxury to paper over the ugliness at the core of it all.

The moment when you said "our only hope" and there appeared photo of Barbara Bialowąs, I literally burst out laughing. She's kinda a legendary polish director because of one of interviews she gave. Basically, she's defending her work and actors' plays saying that critics don't understand her genius, shouldn't be allowed to speak publicly about "art" because "how can they criticize directors if without directors they wouldn't have anything to criticize and, as a consequence, they wouldn't make a living of it.
