I mean when you look here, her fall on a required element was a mandatory .5 deduction (not optional, required), and I think another .1 for not even attempting the 2nd jump of the combo. When you add that her scores would have been really good had she not fallen. And the 2nd mark which were already ok, would have gone up too now. It is not the judges fault in this case.

The first spin she does is one of my favorite clips of her. She knew she was behind the curve with training going into the '92 Olympics...and went into that first spin like her life depended on it. Beautiful program. Landed 3A or not, she's still my ice queen.
@Dylvente2 жыл бұрын
Her layback was always quite good and she really did it well here. She actually did a somewhat easier sideways-leaning position (allowed under the rules) but it was an attractive position, well-centered, fast, and well over the required number of rotations. In an era where most laybacks were pretty lousy. Hers was better than Nancy's, for example.

Actually the judges were very fair to her, she fell on the required jump combo and didn't attempt the 2nd part of it. That is a mandatory deduction. She was over scored at 1992 US nationals to ensure she made the Olympics, and her 1986 Skate America performance, where she was a more rounded skater with excellent footwork, they scored her very high.

Some commentators noted her strong spinning ability (Sandra Bezic in 1991, Dick Button on several occasions) but her spins did not get the attention they deserved overall, perhaps because she was so known for her jumps. Scott Hamilton had plenty of praise for her jumps and her speed across the ice but never remarked on her excellent spins or overall superior skating skills. She doesn't get the credit she deserves for her very good technique. As one commentator said in a program she skated in the mid-80s (I think), Tonya really "did her homework" on the basics of skating. Especially her spins. What's so impressive about her spins is how well-centered they are. I'm sure that helps the speed as well.

@BmcC1026 жыл бұрын
Sylla Atlas, not trying to start a fight, but I don’t agree that Trusova is faster than Harding was here. Sasha Trusova is exactly what Carlo Fassi was afraid of with the age limits. She somehow manages to do amazing things like quad salchows, but her skating leaves many cold. Since she’s Russian, I have little faith that she isn’t cheating, since that’s what their judges, officials, and doping athletes are most known for these days. I won’t answer your other condescending question, but will instead ask you, have you been in fgure skating for 20 years?
@dominicweber6 жыл бұрын
BmcC102 I was being nice not starting a fight at all. I just don’t think that you could generalize this much and decide that all russians are doped. It’s just not true, and definitely not in case of figure skaters. But if you don’t like Trusova, fine, that’s not my business. I just find fascinating how fast she flies over that ice, suddenly jumping enormous things out of nowhere with no hesitation at all, everything going so easy and fast. She’s a ball of energy, so surprising. I enjoy her performances very much, though I have to say that I prefer Shcherbakova.

A fall made it so she didn't do a required element, automatic deduction
@flightoflightning25054 ай бұрын
Because there’s a mandatory deduction for falling. She didn’t even do the combination 2T which is an extra deduction. Even if your program is difficult you have to realize you’re taking a risk so if you fall you know you are getting blackballed for it. That’s like saying “I’m gonna do a 3A-2T combo because I’m so good” then fumble at the competition and still expect to be rewarded. Also Midori Ito landed way better 3A than Tonya, Ito also landed the combination more consistently, Harding lost her 3A after 1991 so I don’t even know what she was thinking doing a 3A after 2 days of jet lag.

Her story just proves that talent alone is not enough in life, you need work ethic, motivation, consistency, and without those other elements chances of success go way down. She's even said in an interview she didn't need to practise as many hours as other skaters to reach that high level. She knew she was talented and became too comfortable with it, that's the real tragedy here.

I saw the movie, and it doesn’t forgive or make excuses for her attempt to sabotage her competitor. But i will say that she was a very competent athlete in her own right.
@quiddy6 жыл бұрын
She’s always tilted in the air, even in the few times she’s landed it in competition. The reason why is that her entrance switch from back to a forward takeoff is not efficient. In other words, the way she switches from right back to left front skate is not smooth and is microseconds too long. As a result, she’s not able to anchor/brake herself optimally to transfer all that horizontal speed into vertical thrust. As a result, you feel that loss of thrust and speed due to essentially a microscopic slip (instead of a critical brake), and likely her reaction is To muscle/force the completion of rotation. But when you do That with your arms and upper body , you just increase the discrepancy of energy /force between your torque-ing/overcompensating upper body AND your lower body (possibly exacerbated/further slowed by bigger thighs). The result is an inevitably catastrophic backwards lean (opposite of the ideal axis-maintaining slightly forward lean) that leads into a spill on the ice - visualize the arms of a speedometer as it moves from left to right. Instead of maintaining that forward lean in the air , where your toes are slightly ahead of your upperbody, your body experiences that speedometer motion , which ultimately could result in your head hitting the ice.
@quiddy6 жыл бұрын
In contrast, Midori Ito- and not take anything away from her talent, unparalleled athleticism and genetically superior short-twitch leg muscles-had always found the axel a much easier and more natural motion than most women (and men for That matter ) because of her naturally bow-legged structure. There’s one article that Newsweek published before Albertville titled “Next stop, Albertville” wherein Midori’s beginnings mentioned her predecessors having “daikon (turnip) legs,” one of whose characteristics is of a bow-legged nature. So when you have this natural state of both legs facing outwards in opposite directions, then that unique Axel transition from Back to front becomes so much easier for you. Your legs would already be in that critical midpoint state, ans because of This, it’s just almost a matter of turning your head and shoulders forward. For Midori there’s virtually no inefficiency or energy loss that is inevitable in pivoting forward at the same time letting your other leg/skate off the ice to follow forward and whiplash upwards to help guide the energy transfer to vertical lift
@catherines40886 жыл бұрын
quiddy I prefer Tonya’s because it’s tilted. This one was *so close* she was just a hair too far over on the outside edge. She was actually too high in the air and had too much time to check out. She nailed it in warm up. Of all the 3A misses she had, this one haunts me the most. You should look at the ones she was doing in 94. They were gorgeous. She had really polished things up at that point, had more musicality, and was in amazing shape. Ironically the hoopla was exactly what did her in IMO. “She could’ve been a contender.”
@quiddy6 жыл бұрын
Catherine S you’re right, I remember being in 7th grade in 94 and everyafternoon in the news they would show clips of her practice triple Axels in her black leotards in her hometown mall rink. But do you remember that the axels she hit were not tilted? That tilt will almost always result in a fall. In fact that’s what did Midori in on her triple Lutz. She was also slightly tilted back when she landed.
@quiddy6 жыл бұрын
Catherine S also I didn’t think she was in shape in 94 either. The black leotards made her look thin in rehearsals but when she actually put on her dress she has heavier than pre 92. In fact after 92 she really gained a lot of weight and there was a time during 93 when she couldn’t do the triple axel
@catherines40886 жыл бұрын
quiddy she wasn’t as “thin” in 94 as she was in 91 but she was also older and had a different body in general. She was in rock solid condition in 94 & lost a ton of weight from 93 to 94. You can look at her legs, arms, and face to see the difference.

Unless you tilted forward like Yamaguchi did, then yes, it is very hard to distribute the weight. The outside edge and forward takeoff makes the jump even stranger, Harding in reality did not have a good 3A technique since she always tilted it and didn’t know how to manage the weight distribution like Midori did.

I was confused how Tanya made it to #2 in the world…all in all Kristi and Nancy were better skaters…especially taking out the Triple Axel (which Tanya was not consistent on anyway). 🤷🏻♂️

Wish I could just listen to that killer of a song and watch her skate without hearing the stupid people criticize her.

I'll never understand why she put in the triple axel. Dumb.

Never seen so much distance from the ice to the skates on that jump she missed. Had she landed that the pressure would have been off the next round and on the competition.

Tonya has always had the body of a woman. The rest have little girl “teeny tiny too-skinny ballerina” body types..⛸

You mean the other girls were feminine?
@itsallgoodman12445 жыл бұрын
@@slavicvolk I think she meant the other girls were little and anorexic. Which I agree, but Nancy, Surya and Midori had nice legs though not gonna lie. Yamaguchi body type was like a little girls.

Still watching, still admiring Tonya ... "still having sex" - she did more for this sport (made it one before it was one) than anyone did for anything.
