The Schwarzlose Model 1898 was a semi-automatic pistol designed by German gun designer Andreas Wilhelm Schwarzlose (1867-1936) in the year 1898. It was one of the first pistol ever designed with less than 1000 manufactured. It was chambered for the 7.65×25mm Borchardt and 7.63×25mm Mauser calibers.
Andreas Wilhelm Schwarzlose served as an artilleryman and armorer in the Austro-Hungarian army. Schwarzlose also invented the Maschinengewehr (Schwarzlose) M. 7 (aka Schwarzlose MG), a medium machine-gun, used as a standard issue firearm in the Austro-Hungarian Army throughout World War I. During this time there were numerous companies attempting to produce semi-automatic pistols for the world market with only a handful actually coming to fruition.
The Schwarzlose design was advanced for its time, but not widely adopted. Small amounts were sold to the Boers during the Boer War. The Model 1898 has a rotating bolt mechanism, and is similar in design to the M16 series of rifles only 110 years earlier.
