3D EMBOSSING FOLDERS - What Are They? How do they work?

Justine! Thank you so much for explaining the difference between a regular embossing folder and a “3D” embossing folder. I’ve been confused because technically a regular embossing folder creates a 3 dimensional effect. I have felt like such a dummy, I’m very glad that I now understand the difference.

I dont have any 3D embossing folders because i didnt know what they were..But now i do..and i will invested in a few..I like the embossed card the best, although both cards are lovely!...Great tutorial.....many thanks!

I like the embossed side best. I have two of the 3D embossing folders. I don’t use them much but they sure have a great look to them on a card.

I like the embossed better. I was watching Tim Holtz do these and he said to give the paper a tiny spritz of water and it will emboss better and keep the embossing. Thanks for explaining what makes it a 3D folder.

Hi, came across your video today. Love the embossed side! I have a set of these folders and love them but as someone else stated a light spritz of water makes the paper a bit more pliable and allows it to go more deeply into the folder without the chance of any tearing or if your paper has a white center, keeps that from possibly breaking through. I have used mine more than I actually thought I would. Thanks for the info!

I really need the proper sandwich for the Vagabond with Crafter's Companion 3D embossing folders. I've been to the Crafter's Companion website and there's nothing listed for the Vagabond.

I'm a big fan of embossing folders but haven't tried 3-D embossing folders yet. I do prefer the dimension in your card with the embossing and popped up oval frame! Beautiful cards!

I bought 2 of these 3D folders and then couldn’t get my reg. Size Gemini to take them. It kept reversing like it was too thick! Thanks so much, guess I should read the manual, huh! Will try it again with proper sandwich this time.

I had that problem. I solved it by just using the regular bottom plate, then the embossing folder and cloudy shim rather than the top plate. I also sometimes use the metallic shin under the cloudy one.

I love my 3D embossing folders. My instructions also suggest to spritz a little water on before running through machine for a more 3D effect. I can see the difference, can you? Try it. Thanks for a great video.

Pretty cards. I always preferred the embossed side however, that’s not to say that I wouldn’t try the deboss side. Thanks for the tutorial. I have a question for you. Have you had a problem with your Gemini cutting plates warping badly and quickly? I have had this problem with all my die cutters but my Gemini seems to have a bigger problem. The plates I’m using now are only 3 weeks old! Not sure what would work to straighten them out.

It depends how often you use them of course as to how often you will need to replace them. I use mine quite often. I use the same cutting plate on the top all the time and I flip it each time I use it. I read that they warp quickly so I always alternate sides. I find that if you use the metal shim, they will warp more than if you don't. I have had my gemini for about 4 months I think and I haven't replaced them yet, they are a little warped but nothing of concern.

Justine Hovey thank you. That might be my problem, I use the metal shim all the time. I too use the same clean plate and rotate the sides of both plates. I’m going to see how I do without the shim. Thank you again.

I have also found that if I place the plate I am cutting into on the bottom that it doesn’t warp as much.

Thanks for the “how to.” I prefer embossed over debossed because I like to add ink to the embossed side to add extra texture.

Thanks for the video. I tried the same sandwich with the Sizzix 3d Lumber embossing folder and the Gemini Junior rejected it. Any idea why? Is the lumber 3d folder thicker than the one you used in the video?

I seldom use the "debossed" side when I use reg embossing folders so you know which way I liked the best. 😊 As for your cards...hmmm...not crazy about the outcome but you gave us another awesome tutorial!! 😁
