One comment that I get, again and again, on my videos is that viewers are grateful that I'm not advertising products to them, but, instead, showing card-makers how to use what they have and get the most out of their tools and supplies. That's a real encouragement to me, and is part of what makes me want to make videos. In a previous incarnation, I was on a number of design teams, and that is what burnt me out as a video maker. Having to use and advertise products I wouldn't necessarily have bought for myself became exhausting. I am so much happier now, making videos using my favourite tools and supplies and focusing on teaching techniques. I think advertising and sponsorships are contributing to not just creator burnout, but viewer burnout too. :)

To add to this- I love how you show a variety of ways to use each product, not just the same set up each time but for, for example, a different colour scheme - instead completely changing up the layout/object sometimes whilst still keeping it fresh & inspiring. Have I bought one or 2 things similar to what I see you use? I might have- but I'm also confident to know how I can use it & where to go for extra inspiration if needed. I like there's a lot less pressure to click a link & buy just because it's the latest.

I have gotten to the point that I have so much stuff it’s stopping me from being creative. So I am in the middle of downsizing and getting rid of a ton of stuff hoping that that will make me be back into loving my cards again and I agree I want to use whatever stuff I have and I think people know if you show them how to make a card they can use their own stamps to make that card too, so it doesn’t have to be brand new stuff all the time, I have thousands and thousands of dollars tied up in craft stuff. Absolutely agree, Janie. Our UK equivalent of Hobby Lobby is Hobbycraft who have done exactly the same thing - who on earth needs to be sucked into these big computer programmed electric cutting machines and now 3D printers costing over £1000 just to get started. They've stopped selling supplies for normal Sizzix type machines altogether. When they first opened they put three super art shops out of business iin Lincoln by selling whatever they sold and then cut all the essential branded artist's materials, replacing them with their own brand. Heartbreaking but they've shot themselves in the foot as people like us are now buying on line but we're no longer inspired by the ability to browse good card making materials anywhere except craft shows, at least those are going strong.

Making and sending cards got me through the pandemic. But at the same time, I was getting resentful of the flood of product, the more and more expensive and fancy tools and machines, entire new product lines every three or six months. It was too much. I went into a bad consumption spiral, and I did have to just stop and go no-buy for about a year. I had to stop watching influencer videos: the constant parade of new papers, inks, dies, stamps was exhausting me. Stopped crafting at all for a while. It was making me anxious and was not fun. As you say, most of us have enough in out stash to craft for the rest of our lives. I know I do. I so appreciated this and the other videos! There are companies that obviously must demonstrate to sell, and I love the tutorials . But they need to be honest about defective products. What can they do when they got stiffed themselves? Maybe lower the price, refund, and explain why and how to still use them, I don't know. I feel for them thinking they had a great line to sell, but their suppliers fell short and left them in a lurch. That has to be crushing, but there should from then on, be a back-up plan. I got tired of big hype, big prices, and damaged products from one company. I quit card making until I started watching other cardmaking videos, found there were other suppliers, and found a very easy, flexible, good quality die cutting machine I could afford. It cut my costs and frustration dramatically! I could create again! It was a game changer. I was back at having the best time of my life and sharing lots of love and cheer. I won't live long enough to use all of the paper I have now. It's all part of our education. These videos encourage exploration and creativity. I am finding many new ways to create. I agree with this. If it costs so much 1) your customer base can't see the value of the product, or 2) simply can't afford to buy it, or 3) company can't make a large enough batch of product to enjoy discounts for volume processing, then companies are in the wrong business. No one is going to buy these products if there are used products at 2nd hand craft stores or buying direct from China. Sorry, that's just the facts. Most people cannot justify paying these prices to make something you can buy for $6-$8 at Walmart (my husband told me to buy cards at Walmart from now on) during these economic times with inflation eating up 25% more of our disposable income. Companies need to think about how they can get the prices back down below $10 with products we see the value in - or go under.

Hi! I do not have kids but do have an 8 year old great niece & her 5 year old brother who are very close to me. Like most kids they love to stay busy and share my love of cool papers, stickers and such. So I fixed up a kit of assorted card making supplies - a busy box and keep them stocked with refills. The basic items are precut & folded blank cards, panels to add, stickers and gem embellishments, and such. I find incredibly cool and funny and beautiful stickers, puffy stickers etc. at many dollar stores, At the rate they use up pretty embellishments it helps to find cheap, attractive sources. I also stamp my own creations to punch out and let them paint or color. This helps me use some of my old paper stash as well. The kids just love everything, it's all new and pretty to them. We don't live far apart, but generally craft individually as the mood strikes or schedules allow. So, at those moments, they tell Mom they want to make cards, go to the 'busy box' and pick out whatever inspires them and get busy creating. Hours of inexpensive fun creating cards to share with family, friends and classmates, Sunday School classmates, and others. Win/win for everyone. I am so impressed with their work! Stamping is messy so I don't stamp much and know their Mom does not appreciate messes either. So I use my laptop to make pages of greetings and texts printed on heavy weight cardstock that their Mom can trim to size and shape or punch out and help them adhere to the cards. I am not sure how to upload images to this site. The big holiday season is almost here so I will be busy updating the refills for Halloween, Fall. Christmas, Valentine's, Easter and always tons of birthdays. I see them loving to entertain themselves, develop their creative geniuses, not be glued to to electronics, learn to express themselves, to show their feelings for others and be caring little people. As long as card making helps us to grow in these ways and discover the joy in sharing this craft, card making will never die. 2

This is a very important topic and you presented it well. I think another aspect is people retiring from the hobby with fewer new or younger crafters coming in. This hobby can be done simply but as we all know our stashes can escalate rapidly needing space, and time, not to mention money. Its hard to entice younger people to stamp although I'm sure they would enjoy it. Sustainability it also an issue. Some stamps are so specific you may only use them once or twice. Not to mention the overwhelm people feel when seeing all the new releases and options out there. Its much easier to aquire than use a supply and I think most of us have things we had to have but havent used (i hope its not just me, lol😅) but that can make us feel ashamed and not inspired by our supplies. I suffered a huge cardmaking burnout and I am just getting back to the point of enjoying stamping again and I find the products that inspire me are ones i bought, and thoughtfully considered, and not design team gifts. They are all older too before things became copies of copies of copies. I think there are probably more companies releasing more product than the customer base can support. It will reach equilibrium and shift and evolve like scrapbooking did over to cardmaking. Junk journaling and planning are big. Mixed media and art journaling are big. Stamping isnt over, its just changing. I think its broadining which is good. There's room for everyone on every budget to express themselves and create.

Let me add this thought too because it is very important, when the local businesses go out of business because of cheap foreign entities have put them out of business then their prices will go up and they will have the monopoly over customers and their prices will increase. Thank you for this video. Appreciate your thoughts, and for the most part, agree with you. What I find disappointing in the card making industry is the flagrant and pushy promotion of products. I like the KZbin videos, but the posters are not upfront about the fact that that they are promoting more consumerism. Do you ever see them re-using older products? Never. Some posters, like AmyR, are upfront about the value of using their links. Other don’t talk about it, almost as if they need to hide the fact that that they are salespeople. And no one mentions the inflated prices. The latest STAMPTEMBER release is a classic example. More stamps and dies that are costly? BUY BUY BUY seems to be the message. I have Tonic kits, Hero Arts kits, Gina K kits, Altenew kits, and Spellbinders. Most are still in the box! I appreciate your videos because you are honest and upfront.

I don’t want to speak for the poster, but Gina K is one of the ones I won’t buy from anymore - I don’t care what it is. New products, ridiculously priced, that are not ordered in sufficient quantity so they are hyped and talked about for months to create FOMO and then they aren’t what was advertised! The Fuse was billed as having 4 rollers instead of 3 like the Swapp. After it sold out the first or second time, they quietly announced it only had 3 rollers and was identical to the Heidi Swapp machine - oops, someone misunderstood the manufacturer. Did they compensate the purchasers for the misinformation? No. The Intri-cut. Brand new product designed by Gina K and for a ridiculous price. Sold out instantly, months of hype generating. Only, surprise!, I have had one for years. It’s called a Bira Bira adjustable die cutting machine and the ONLY difference is it has orange accents instead of teal. As for Tim Holtz? Love their products and continue to buy them, but the repetition does get annoying. Distress ink, distress spray, distress watercolor, distress…it’s kind of entertaining to see how many ways they can market the exact same color.

I find card making has become too expensive. As soon as you buy a tool, the companies seem to wait until everyone has purchased it and then design a new one, with maybe one small change. And then so many videos push it. Then there is foiling. A whole new series of supplies is needed. Copics, sneed I say more? They seem to be the best, but do they really have to be so expensive? I refuse to use them, due to the cost. If you want a nice stamp set with stamps, dies and stencils, you have probably spent $50-70. So no, we can’t buy several at a time. That is my rant, it is an expensive hobby. I am still making cards, but I don’t use foiling, copics or other expensive gimmicks.

The comments that I got was 'Why pay $4-$5 for your cards when I can go to the dollar tree and get it for $1." Those comments hurt my craft business. I started making Thank you cards and tags for my direct business and paper products to help my direct sales business. When I ended that business and started my crafting business with my Cricut. I was making all kinds of things that no one had. When the Cricut started become popular, we started seeing all the same thing at craft fairs, holiday boutiques etc and that I took a hit and stopped my business. Also, I don't have the need to make stuff for our house. So at this point, I am in the process of selling all my stuff as my crafting era is ending and this is very hard for me. But I don't have the space that I use to have and the space that I do have it is hard to craft. I think there are two more reasons why cardmaking is in a slump right now. First: The cost of sending one single card in the US now is .73! That's a lot--and, for me, it's made it unaffordable to continue sending out big batches (such as the annual holiday card I've mailed for years and years--especially when you also want to send cards out overseas if you're in Facebook groups.) Also, square cards cost more to send here, so I find that's out for me, and it seems like adding dimension if it's over 1/4", needing to make specialized, handcrafted envelopes, and requesting hand stamping all require extra postage. Enough is enough!! Secondly: Though you are young, I think many in the hobby have aged to the point where they're now looking to just use what they have, as you've said, or they're trying to downsize everything they own. I know. this has made me really picky about how much I want, how much I want to spend, and what I want to buy.

While I completely agree & understand, and don’t support overseas copycat sites, the cost of releases & constant pushing new sets/bundles/releases at outrageous prices, it’s very hard to justify the cost for papercrafting. Take for example the ridiculous prices of Stamptember sets, where there is a new one every day for 30 days. Gina K’s set is over $60 USD - that’s $100 AUD plus tax plus shipping. Also, I want to use the supplies I already have, but then products are discontinued and there is no way to get affiliate commissions. I have spent an enormous amount of money on supplies but am so overwhelmed by it all that I rarely craft anymore. There’s an over saturation of product coming out all at once. Long shipping times cause you to forget why you got the product, thus setting them aside and forgetting you have them. There’s this new trend of saying things go ‘out of style’…keep up with the Joneses, don’t be left out etc., etc., etc.. I love this hobby. I love collecting an array of products, but I have been seriously considering a no buy period. Thank you again Justine for always keeping it real.

I have noticed so many companies closing their doors. It is sad. It has been overwhelming the last few years with so many companies releasing so much in a short amount of time. It was too much. I am still buying products but spend most of my money on tools and sprays/inks. Thanks for your thoughts.

I think the cost of postage has a huge effect, particularly international. Both the postage involved in supplies but also sending the cards we make. I'm sure I'm not alone in having a huge stash of cards I will probably never use. Laura Beacham does a "Take Charge Thursday" which is all around using what you have. Love those!

It's hard when you've been stamping for almost 30 years. I have so much stuff and each year I buy less and less and try to use what I have. I also avoid all Temu, Aliexpress, etc. hauls. The people who buy from them try to justify why they do it. Not having the money for the real thing is not a reason. It's theft, plain and simple.

I feel overwhelmed by all my stash. I’m trying to use more and by less. I feel used when I see influencers using a new product and never use it again. @@americacuevas9954 that is a point I don’t think Justine addressed. One company brings out mushrooms and suddenly everyone has a mushroom stamp or die out there. Makes me wonder why that is and if the pool of designers is also getting smaller.

You described exactly where I'm at as a paper crafter. I have a craft room filled with product that I bought over the years and now that everything is so unbelievably expensive, I made a commitment to craft more than shop. I no longer buy anything and spend my time using what I have. That will have to stay that way until prices return to normal if they ever do. The economy doesn't allow much room for recreation that's for sure!

I like the idea of focusing on the themes and design of a card, versus any specific brand or products. Some people can do this on their own watching a company sponsored video, but others struggle.

Crafting is a luxury... When people struggle every day for food, needs & basic expenses, fun or hobbies are the first to go... I hear it all the time... For me, money is not the issue, it is the never-ending push of products, the sameness of every company... The repeat of products and designs on a loop... It gets old. I have found that when I do buy it has to be something I don't have or I really like. Even with the sales and store clearances, I don't buy. I can't wait for the day when craft companies go back to original designs and fewer product releases. At least that is how I feel.

I’m one who wishes more content creators would use the things that aren’t necessarily brand new in their videos. We get caught up in the hype of monthly releases when, in reality, last month’s product sitting on your shelf is just as amazing and fun to use. But instead of feeling inspired to use it, we get the FOMO, accumulate more product because a certain designer created something beautiful in a video and then end up feeling that overwhelming, overloaded, creative paralysis of too much stuff. Then one day we come to a point where we look around and realize that we have more product than we could use in our lifetime and if we don’t stop allowing ourselves to give into the ‘influencer’ lifestyle every month we’ll never get any actual enjoyment out of what we already spent money on. Which begs the question.. Why did I spend money on it? To sit on the shelf? Also when I’m looking to buy something I’d much rather pay more for original designs and better quality and support a small business than buy a cheap version where I know that design has been stolen, so I’d be supporting thieves. I’d also be supporting questionable labor practices, lower quality materials made with who knows what toxins, etc. No thanks.

Thank you for your informative video!! One thing that I believe a lot of cardmakers struggle with is finding a certain stamp or die, etc. quickly in their huge stash of supplies and need to enter all their supplies, including stamps, dies, press plates, stencils, inks and reinkers, into a program where you can find a specific supply or see if you need to order a reinker, for example. I love your introduction to Airtable and have been using that to keep track of my supplies. Still, all in all, I think it would be great if you explained to crafters how they could begin to set it up all the way through more advanced operations, it would be ever so helpful to many crafters. I also wanted to say that I used to work in International law and even if you have a copyright or trademark in a foreign country, it doesn’t necessarily mean the foreign country will monitor your intellectual property and when you have to battle it out in court is when it becomes very expensive!!!

Stamps and dies can be used over and over again. You get tired of them, then you’re stuck with them and feel guilty buying more just to have something different, that really might not be all that different. Maybe 15yrs ago now there was an amazing local craft store in Canada that had at the back a wall of punches and dies where they would also host classes. During the day while the shop was open anyway shoppers could go and sit down use any of those tools for $2 per hour. Store already owned and used them anyway so why not? And while there people often needed or wanted to try different papers etc so they still got some sales. It was amazing customer service offering that and a very loyal customer base. Was very sad when owner retired and closed the store.

I have stamps I have owned for over 30 years, I love looking at them and reminiscing about who I brought them from, the uses I made of them, and how much joy they have brought me. It seems most card designers are out to sell their sponsors' products first and foremost. This kit or that new gadget that costs far more than I can afford. The moment I see a video captioned with "You've got to try this new product," or "It's a game changer!" I scroll by. I want techniques, ways to make my own supplies or do things differently, etc. I want to learn how to make unique backgrounds and greetings. I want to be able to use the products I have, not have to buy everything new each month. I still make cards to give to others but no longer buy the expensive kits.

I have not lost interest in making cards but successful adhered to a no spend on craft spending season for 8 months due to financial season. The last few weeks I have bought a few supplies, filling in perceived needs. My attitude has changed. I have lost the desire to invest in complicated techniques. Current interest is quick and easy techniques that use the supplies that I already own. I usually avoid knock off products but will admit to rarely buying one. I am restarting a card making group of young inexperienced card makers. I have given some surplus to them. There are no local craft stores, that I know of within an hours drive. I am elderly and only drive that far.

I really appreciate that you opened this discussion, Justine! I have a lot of products and enjoy a occasional card kit. Note-- "occasional" as it might inspire me or lead to a new product. I like companies that allow you to turn off the monthly subscription if you don't want it that month. That said, I am at the point where I have so many supplies that I prefer tutorials that combine stamps and supplies regardless of the maker. So many cross over and create beautiful cards etc.! I vote for GENERAL CREATIONS regardless of brand. Thanks again.

Like you, Justine, I used to scrapbook, and back in the day, I bought ALL THE THINGS. Then, when I got bored with that, I naturally morphed into cardmaking, since it uses mostly the same supplies, and I still had (have) a craft room full of stuff. I have to say, over the last ten years or so, I've just been using the stuff I have. I haven't bought much, besides cardstock, in years, not that I wasn't tempted! Now, I'm getting a severe itch to try some new (to me) techniques and tools. I've been getting so inspired, watching wonderful videos by the many talented makers, including you, who do all the amazing things, like inking, embossing, and stenciling. And oh, the TOOLS! So many cool things! I'm really feeling that urge to buy some new stuff, but I'm trying hard to hold back and continue to use what I have. I think I'll start small, though, and buy some inks and a set of blending tools, just to see if I like it. But you know how it is - it's a slippery slope, right? You buy a little, you want more and more! But it's okay. I love crafting and will always love crafting, even if the specifics change.

But part of the problem is many of the products we buy are still made over there. The cost to manufacture dies in the US is not sustainable to most of the companies we support here. If they were made here because of the cost of labor, lack of manufacturers that make dies etc the cost passed on to the consumer would be much higher and most of us wouldn’t buy. This , I believe, is why consumers turn to those crappy rip off outlets like temu and ali express. They want new but don’t want to pay the price or care that the product is ripped off. This is a hobby and not a cheap one if you are of the mindset that you need everything. The question is what are you using? But at the same time so are other hobbies like golf, travel etc. We live in an instant gratification society. We see it, we want it, we buy it. There are so many other outlets to find original product such as resell groups. I have been in many on FB and an always amazed at how very little activity there is. I have tried to sell my older, well taken care of product that I no longer use. It’s a pain in the butt. I have become much more selective in what I buy and where I buy it. People want the new and shiny and want it now for cheap. It’s a societal problem. Look at Starbucks, many people don’t blink at paying those prices so they can drive through and pick it up. INSTANT GRATIFICATION. I am amazed today when I hear how bad the economy is and yet most restaurants are busy every night in my area. If you want something bad enough you will find a way to afford. If you can’t afford it the question is how badly do you NEED IT?
