I absolutely love what you've done here. You've given me an elegant solution to a difficult problem. Thanks so much. I think my client will love this method.

I am blown away, I've been playing with resin for years and for the past year driving myself crazy with different ways to attempt faux stained glass... I'm very late to this party but just realized yesterday after ordering a 3d printer that I could do this. Your examples are AMAZING and I feel so inspired!

I've actually done something similar but instead of paint I used various nail polishes to give the tinted resin depth ( and sparkles). Your vid has inspired me to make snowflake ornaments for Christmas :)

this is so cool! since we bought our house i have been wanting to try diy stained glass but it seemed very involved. we recently bought a 3d printer so am going to try this asap. What a cool idea to use the 3dprinter to make custom forms to hold the 2d resin shapes!

That turned out pretty well. I would recommend doing research on which pigments are transparent and which have the highest light fastness ratings. Otherwise your art will fade quite quickly in direct sunlight
@shareahack3 жыл бұрын
After doing some digging I believe 'alcohol inks' designed for resin would provide the best transparency. Like these: amzn.to/3zk52N6

Question, please. If I wanted to print something similar to the the sun catcher, but needed it to have a solid sheet for the first layer, how would I do that? Thank you in advance.
@shareahack Жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, this is actually very easy to do - just "extrude" the entire shape behind the design into a solid flat piece (whatever the desired depth) and it would connect a flat backing to the design. If you need a hand with the design part feel free to email me at shareahack@gmail.com. Cheers!

Hi K P I tried contact paper, and it looked like it was going to work fine, but when I hit it with the heat gun to get rid of bubbles, the piece lost all contact with the paper. Any suggestions if you have a certain method there? I was hoping it would be fine since cleaning glue off the back is tedious.

Instead of using resin, try using clear craft glue mixed with stamp ink. It will give you the transparency you desire.

What did you use under the base?
@shareahack7 ай бұрын
Wax paper (also known as parchment paper), and a thin base layer of clear epoxy to seal the cells. Once the clear layer has cured a bit, pour in the mixed colors!

Interesting method to get a vector to 3D model. I always just export a SVG and bring into Blender and extrude. I think your way is looking cleaner, at least for onlines.

What did you use as a backing so that the resin stayed in the design? I was a bit confused on that.

Just simple wax paper (parchment / baking paper)!

I've printed some frames after watching your video, and I'm about to put some resin in them. This will be the first time I've ever used resin for anything. I expect I'll get some through, so, could you tell me how I could clean it off the back if and when that happens?
@shareahack3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean if it spills out around the outer edges and hardens on the wax paper? In that case you can try using an x-acto knife (or scissors) to trim the excess around the edges. Hope it works out!
@MsCashKelly3 жыл бұрын
Okay, I did it! I used the method you suggested of clear, with colour later. The glue looks terrible on the back, and was wondering if you know how I should get it off? I was thinking nail polish remover, but I don't want to do any damage. The front looks really good. I'm so pleased as a first try. I used the acrylic paint, and it hasn't even been 24hours and it's pretty hard and not gooey. My frames are 3mm deep. I have already made some more frames, and I think I'll try the contact paper as one of your viewers suggest. I'm looking forward to seeing more of these by you. I hope you do some more!
@MsCashKelly3 жыл бұрын
I was able to get the glue off by putting some nail polish remover on it and did some rubbing with a q-tip and scraping with a flat blade. Took awhile, but turned out good. So then I tried the method of contact paper. Seemed to work fine until I hit with the heat gun and it lost all contact and clear flooded out. I was able to cut it away after it hardened enough to work with, but the back didn't come out nearly as clean as cleaning off the glue, since there is a layer of resin over the entire fame on that one.

I love it. Can it be used any art resin ? Or Is there an specific type?
@shareahack2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carmen, sure you could use any 2-part resin! Resins can be expensive so maybe start with a smaller amount to see how far you can can stretch it...a small 8oz Art Resin kit can go surprisingly far. One user suggested using stamp ink (alcohol based) but I bet you could get away with food coloring too for some nice transparency. If you're really on a budget, you could get some dollar-store "5-minute epoxy" but make sure you're very well prepared to color-tint and pour because you only have a few minutes before it hardens (the plus side being you get to enjoy your final product faster). You could try experimenting with adding very small amounts of rubbing alcohol to the 5-minute epoxy to 'thin' it and increase the curing time. Let me know how it works out for you!

Why use resin instead of Glass if you used metal frame?
@christinavonsiebenbeurgen2 жыл бұрын
Using glue to affix the 3D printed frame to actual glass will keep the leaks from happening. The clear resin first is also a good idea.

This has convinced me to buy a 3d printer! Do you have any 3d printer recommendations for creating a 4ft tall vase?
@shareahack4 жыл бұрын
Love to hear it! A 4ft print seems huge for a regular consumer printer...so unless you buy an extra large printer and can wait the (potentially) multiple days to print the whole thing, consider breaking up the print into multiple sections and gluing them together afterwards. For taller prints, look at 'delta' printers...they can provide a lot more height usually than regular cartesian or coreXY printera. Let us know how it goes!

It's been soon 1.5 years since this video. Has your 3D Stained Glass Suncatcher warped in any way? Does it look the same today as back then?
@shareahack3 жыл бұрын
The round one curved slightly because it is one large piece with more tensions across the cells. A little shot with a heat gun on a flat surface would fix this...and the PLA frame would relax a bit while hot and could counteract any more warping once it cools. The birds one looks exactly the same with no warping at all...probably because the cells are small and the tension is spread out. Thanks for watching 👌

Resin makes it too dark. It must be more transparent. Some people prefers to use clear school glue + food paint mixed
