The priest in charge of Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral says the landmark, nearly destroyed by Monday's fire, will be closed for five or six years. Twenty-first century technology will likely be pivotal in its reconstruction. Jericka Ducan reports.

Dresden’s fabulous Frauenkirche was virtually completely destroyed during WWII, and today it stands proudly reconstructed purely from donations. Purely by chance I was actually there during the reconstruction work, and each and every stone used to reconstruct the church was stored and numbered on pallets, and had a defined, planned position to fill in the new construction. Using today’s technology, it should be relatively easy to re-plan and reconstruct Notre Dame as well. It seems that there are enough mega-rich people willing to donate huge sums of money to resurrect it. I remember when Lucerne’s wooden Kapellenbrücke burned down they even sold articles made of its charred wood to raise cash for its reconstruction. I’m sure that the same could be done from the charred wood from Notre Dame for the same purpose.

Thanks to this Frauenkirche has no historical value. It stands there as a symbol and from outside it looks authentical, however from inside you can instantly see it is a modern structure. I hope they will learn from this mistake and they will try to restore atmosphere of true gorhic cathetral. Just look for cathedral in Köln, it has steel structure as it was finished in 19th century, however they preserved illusion of gothic cathedral very well. Now they need to decide what to do. But I think steel is out of question as walls of Notre-Dame cannot bare its weight. To restore it they need to restore acient knowledge of 12 and 13th century.

There is more: the Walt Disney Company unwittingly might be sitting on top of a very large trove of sketches and drawings of the cathedral, done 1993-1995. At that time, there was a branch of the animation studio in St Denis, a suburb of Paris. They DID do work on the Hunchback of Notre Dame along with L.A. (they did the same thing years before with Beauty and the Beast: artists went on field trips to the Loire Valley to draw the manors and chateaus in order to create the castle.) These images are about 25 years old, but they are close enough to the present time to be useful. (Remember, they also would have had to research what it would have looked like c. 1480. The spire that burned 3 days ago was an addition by Viollet Le Duc after the original medieval one was too damaged to be salvaged. They won't be useful for anything technical, but they could be good for aesthetics.

well good they can source all of the photos and then map them to the point cloud and make an accurate reconstruction. I wouldn't be upset if they could also improve the stability of it in some way although I'm not sure if steel reinforcements inside of the stone would be the best way to do it as it would rust..

Andrew left an important, state of the art record, retrospectively. He died of aggressive brain cancer. Hopefully the cancer cannot be linked to the scanning process.
@epincion
@epincion 5 жыл бұрын
These sort of 3D laser scans are have been done by many people all over the world and if the process caused brain cancer the link would have been shown. Aggressive primary brain cancers in adults (e.g. GBM) are rare but do occur mostly in males in the 60-75yr age group. Its not known what causes them with certainty but is probably not just one factor.

@@epincion he was not that old some forms of scanning are linked to brain cancer ie x rays 19 Jul 2018 · A new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute suggests that CT scans, commonly used in medical imaging, may increase the risk of brain tumors.

@epincion 5 жыл бұрын
3D Laser scanning uses coherent visible light not x-rays. The worst damage that could come would be from looking straight into the laser beam which could damage your eyesight. While the peak incidence of GBM is in the 60-70yr age group it is seen in younger adults- even in the 20's.

@@epincion I know. So he was doing one type of scanning? You know his life history? "Radiation is the emission (sending out) of energy from any source. X-rays are an example of radiation, but so is the light that comes from the sun and the heat that is constantly coming off our bodies. When talking about radiation and cancer, many people think of specific kinds of radiation such as x-rays or the radiation made by nuclear reactors. But there are other types of radiation that act differently. Radiation exists across a spectrum from very high-energy (high-frequency) radiation to very low-energy (low-frequency) radiation. This is sometimes referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum. Examples of high-energy radiation include x-rays and gamma rays. They, as well as some higher energy UV radiation, are called ionizing radiation, which means they have enough energy to remove an electron from (ionize) an atom or molecule. This can damage the DNA inside of cells, which can result in cancer. Radiofrequency (RF) radiation, which includes radio waves and microwaves, is at the low-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is a type of non-ionizing radiation. Non-ionizing radiation has enough energy to move atoms in a molecule around or cause them to vibrate, but not enough to ionize (remove charged particles such as electrons). RF radiation has lower energy than some other types of non-ionizing radiation, like visible light and infrared, but it has higher energy than extremely low-frequency (ELF) radiation. If RF radiation is absorbed in large enough amounts by materials containing water, such as food, fluids, and body tissues, it can produce heat. This can lead to burns and tissue damage. Although RF radiation does not cause cancer by damaging DNA in cells the way ionizing radiation does, there has been concern that some forms of non-ionizing radiation might have biological effects that could result in cancer in some circumstances.""
@MilesBellas
@MilesBellas 5 жыл бұрын
@@epincion "Man-made RF radiation is used for many different things, such as Broadcasting radio and television signals Transmitting signals from cordless telephones, cell phones and cell phone towers, satellite phones, and 2-way radios Radar WiFi and Bluetooth Cooking food (in a microwave oven) Heating body tissues to destroy them in medical procedures “Welding” pieces of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) using certain machines Millimeter wave scanners (a type of full body scanner used for security screening) Some people can have significant RF exposure as part of their jobs. This includes PVC welders, people who maintain antenna towers that broadcast communication signals, and people who use or maintain radar equipment. Most people are exposed to much lower levels of man-made RF radiation every day due to the presence of RF signals all around us. They come from radio and television broadcasts, WiFi and Bluetooth, cell phones (and cell phone towers), and other sources."

Not my words, I’m not so eloquent, I understand the need for cultural icons and am myself in awe of some of the architectural marvels around the world. But, it's just a "thing", no matter how pretty or how embedded in history. I cannot help but find it somewhat obscene that $1billion dollars can be raised in one day to rebuild a material thing that is predominantly just a tourist attraction. When millions of people starve to death daily for lack of food, water and medicine; when refugee camps (incl. within France itself) are left in squalor; and when the builders and tenants of said attraction spend millions annually defending child abusers. It shows the peculiarity of the human condition and the ways in which values are assigned...
@annekedebruyn7797
@annekedebruyn7797 5 жыл бұрын
1. We have to learn that people are replacable and that we cannot save anyone. Overpopulation is doing its thing. 2. The issue of refugee camps are the refugees. Food is not being accepted, frequent fights are breaking out it's well documented. 3. The building is state owned and the builders historically, have been regular citizens. It generates more money than it costs due to the influx of tourism which means a better economy which means a better living for the refugees and poor people world wide as French is a heavy donator to poor countries. It needs to find the money somewhere. 4. A lot of people are spiritually attracted to the church so it's no wonder that a lot ofp eople donated.

I am not putting gaming down - but getting too much credit is not necessary in this case. This research was not done by a gaming company. I was pure digitizing of the real structure. Thank goodness fo that... Today - a lot of design fields are overlapping. Yet - architecture still holds the crown when it comes to historical landmarks. I actually believe that gaming develops intellectual skills and other faculties in players. Minecraft comes to mind. It is basically programming...
