Nice explanation video! I started with blender around 10 months ago and found out about typology mostly by trial and error, later with some courses. Though I am still a beginner in 3d modelling I think it often helpful to watch such videos aimed at beginners to remember the basics which might get a bit lost on every creative sector. For me this was helpful ☺🤘

Awesome bro. I have just started out in Maya and was searching what exactly is good topology. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of good information on it. Your video made it easy to understand for me. If possible can you make a tutorial on solving mesh and modeling with good topology.

That mostly takes practice. Model, look at topology references, fix it, try again. Eventually you learn the patterns...

To be more accurate, you shouldn't say that tris and ngones are not suitable for animation. They are actually, as long as they are not in areas which will be deformed. The tank is a good example: even when animated, there are no deformations (except maybe on the tire's plastic part and stuff like that), It will be just about moving and rotating linked geometry parts around without deforming the actual geometry. So even in that case, a geometry full of triangles/ ngones and without good edge flow, is not that needed.

tri's okay but not n-gons

Hi! Any good tutorial videos for changing a 3d model's Ngons and tris to quads? Ive played with a lot of Sketchfab models and learnt alot from "good" and "bad" models, making quad based 3d models from scratch is one thing, but not really sure the steps of "Fixing" a bad topology model thats been already created.
@bshukrallah3 жыл бұрын
You would need to retopo... I do have a video of that process from when I made a tie fighter (it's not the best... but may be worth a shot) there are tools like Zremesher in Zbrush that can take care of this for you also, but results will vary.

Are there any topology rules
@bshukrallah4 жыл бұрын
Hi, it all depends on what you are going for, here are some tips though: Organic facial topology will look different than a hard surface machine mesh, and will animate a little different also. In areas that move, like the mouth, or an arm I would try to keep quads and keep up with a flow of polys like shown in the video, so the animation is smoother. If you absolutely need tris, put them somewhere that doesn't move, like the bottom of a foot, or top of the skull where it will be covered with hair. Don't be afraid to google images of topology for different types of models, such as arms, hands, faces, etc. Lots of people have done studies on deformation, so no need to reinvent the wheel.

@bshukrallah5 жыл бұрын
It takes time and practice. Don't quit and try to fix the quads if possible. You can Google images of other faces and their topology to get ideas on the flow of polygons.
@purewinter56505 жыл бұрын
Topogun with the drawing tools that let you cover large surfaces quickly and evenly, then grab the verts and move them around freely? The extrude feature would help you around mouths and eyes, it automatically creates another 'ring' around the first set you made and you can real time control as it crawls out.

Maya automagically makes good topology?

I used to do that too, model first in blender and ensure proper topology from the get go. However, I now actually prefer the flexibility to concept and sculpt in Zbrush not worrying about topology right away, until after I have pretty much wrapped up the model.

@Zoids-bf6op5 жыл бұрын
what if you r merging many parts into one parts. Its impossible to avoid triangles. Triangles is a must to have equal dense spaces around the whole model. Example u r merging a complicated belt object with the body into 1 mesh. besides people bake the normals nowadays they dont subdivide is anymore. Maybe unless you are doing modeling for films than that may need subdivision then quads is very important i suppose? whereas n-gons is a must avoid since the renderer will not know how to triangulate since its not a 4 sided poly.
