I just bought mine a couple weeks before your review. I had issues with it out of the box. I did buy from Amazon and jumped on the deal at $499 with back pack, gimbal, battery and extra props. I had to add a malware app or something and re-calibrate the unit. It flew great the first time I flew it. The second time it was hovering and randomly started flying away. I was unable to correct it as it flew towards my neighbors house. I flew it straight down into the ground. Luckly it landed in thick grass and was fine. I thought I had done something wrong but after hearing your issues it sounds like a unit issue. Then as I tried to charge the controller for the first time it would not charge. I received the RMA for the unit and returned it. They are sending me a refurbished unit and the gimbal is coming from another business. Now I see this video and am considering returning it to Amazon.

You can submit the ticket through the app. They still have some people on staff that might be able to assist you. Do it quick as the Drone will need some battery life left in it to be GPS trackable. If not, I would think 3dr could read the flight log and perhaps give you an estimated location.

Had one out of the box screwed up. This system blows chunks. Contacted 3DR only to find they stopped manning the phone support. Email support was 3-6 days response time. Shipped it back to Amazon and I said "Eff it". Amazon worked with me and even offered a Gift card for the issue. Evidently it's their procedure for this system because they said there was a technical note in the system about 3DR products. The PR machine that was 3DR sure played a good game on people. Even a past DJI user was pulled into it. Never again.

I bought my Solo on Amazon for a fathers day special ! Didn't know the gimbal was for Go Pro only so I only flew one time and now waiting to have money for a Go Pro. Since my purchase I have seen many better deals with extra batteries. Don't like the way the gimbal is attached and connected. The HDMI cable is too stiff and so are the other wires. Don't know why they didn't use silicone insulated wiring to the gimbal. Looks like it doesn't matter now. If mine keeps working I'll be satisfied, but will probably end up modifying or just using parts to build something else.

There's another perspective, and one that I want to voice... BB is selling this now as a package for $300! In my opinion I recommend if you have the funds to go buy one and set it aside for awhile - don't make this your primary drone. If you do, you may be disappointed. But understanding that you can barely but a toy drone for the same price and treat this as such - how can you not pass it up? I treat mine as a "trainer" for me to learn on before I fly my Phantom 4. For me it's a no brainer! Next point is that there's a huge community of Solo owners growing, some very resourceful people. Nothing spurs innovation better than necessity! Wait until owners start hacking the firmware, and putting out free open source updates. Take a look at what Linux did for operating systems, it's one of the most stable platforms for running applications, servers, embedded devices, etc. Heck, even the Apple iOS has Linux in its DNA. I'm thrilled to know I'll be able to participate in the future updates for the solo. Lastly, the MacGyver crowd may also hack the hardware. Meaning there are $800 worth of parts in this package, the controller alone is worth the $300 Best Buy is charging for the entire kit. You could disassemble this to its fundamental parts, and use them to build your own Frankenstein drone. It's a great experimental platform, and if you don't mind gambling $300 do you have a bit of fun then I see no downside. Just don't make the mistake of thinking this drone will be your videoing platform. And certainly don't bring it on vacation as your only drone to video with. You will Shorely not be happy if you do that. Your mindset should be this will be a bit of fun to play with. And I guarantee you will be happy. At least that's my opinion, and I have no regrets. Just a different perspective…

There were just too many instances of problems and 3dr knew it -- a case of poor management from what I've been reading what was going on inside the company .I don't know,don't care at this point . Best Buy now has them for $299 with the drone, gimbal, extra battery and extra blades. I'm getting it because I already have a GoPro and it's just $300 lol. I'll get my use out of it and move up to the DJI Phantom 4. Not sure if I plan to go with the Pro or Standard model. It's just for fun for me and I'm still new to drones. I've flown electric planes in the past and cheap the Walmart drones(VR Drone Promark P70).

I loved the concept of this quadcopter but, I think they should have followed DJI's model and just upgraded the Iris which was a decent selling product, and they needed to market the Iris better than what they did in the past. I have heard rumors that 3DR is in serious financial peril which will possibly end the company unfortunately.

I've been building my own quads and hexas for 4 years now. I bought parts for their APM boards. I noticed when I emailed them with questions or concerns these guys were not reading my email in its entirety. So that was enough for me and I predicted they would not last long. They did, just no one read the original press releases or the companies future plans to go commercial and not stay with the consumer market. They gave that and the toy market to DJI. They are partners with Autodesk, Intel, Kodak, Sony and if you don't know who they are you have been under a rock for the last 30 years.

+Kelvin R (Trying everything) I don't thing so unless you are well verses in RC and know how to replace the dialing GPS sensors and other issues that 3DR support will no longer cover. Essentially, be prepared to have to fix it yourself when(not if) parts start to fail

Very informative Tim. I,m newbe drone flyer. First drone SYMA 8x , then Bayyang (something) X16, along with some minis. Lots of fun modifying and learning -- So far around $500.. Next - Traxxas Aton (awsome drone and tons of fun. Around 400.00. Well before I listened to your video saw the price of Solo on Best Buy. I already read about troubles 3DR was having, went ahead and bought The Solo, which included -- gimbel, extra battery, 4 extra props, and back pack for $369.00 including shipping. I havnt unboxed it yet (having too much fun with my Traxxas) but some day I will if I live long enough ( I'm 74). It may not work, but at least i know I have a high tech drone. Got mine for $350, with the Gimbal and extra battery. Plus I already had a Hero 4 Black. So, it was a no-brainer. For that price I don't care what the company does. On top of that the Solo has performed flawlessly for me. Seems like most people critique the Solo as if it still costs $1,000.

It's all opinions. I'm not trying to say everyone is wrong about 3DR but when a company mass produces "electronic" devices, your bound to see some that have problems. I have a 3DR along with several other friends and we all have never had problems with the Solo. I've gotten awesome shots using the Solo. I would agree that the Solo is not worth the $800 it used sell for but for the $399 it's worth it. I also own a DJI so yes I have experience in both brands.

I would say 3dr should not be purchased unless you are prepared to provide your own software and hardware support. Personally, the Mavic Pro is on its way to me. Garrett S I think you'll be pleased. Join the 3 dr group on fb and read the sticky and related links. It will answer most beginning questions without asking a question that has already been asked 1000 times. You need GoPro 3plus black or GoPro 4 to have full camera controls while flying.

wish I'd known this before I bought. got it from best buy and flew for first time this week. flew for a few minutes before deciding on it's own that it wanted to do exactly what you described, fly sideways and right into trees at the edge of a meadow I was flying in. broke a couple of propellers so replaced them and started flying again. as battery got low I hit the home button and instead of landing as it had in the past when I hit home button it went straight up and kept going up then dropped out of the sky. hitting the ground it caught on fire. breaking more propellers. having not purchased through Amazon I'm sure I'm out the money. Fortunate to have purchased it at a deal but still not happy that it was a pointless purchase. Hope we don't see them in the market again.

I appreciate your warnings but I view your story as an anecdote. It's unfortunate that you had the luck that you had but I strongly doubt everyone will have the same luck. For $400, I couldn't pass up the software features, gimbal, and sleek drone. Now you're correct, there's absolutely no way I would've bought this drone if it were its original price AND if I didn't already have a GoPro. But I have a GoPro, and it's at a liquidation price. This drone is a worthwhile investment and I have the same luck as you, I can promise you I won't give it many chances.

Bought one of these from BB for $399 w/gimbal/extra battery/props, as I had a GP Hero 4 already. My only complaint was the first few flights it seemed to take around 3-5 min for it to GPS lock. This was remedied by purchasing a $79 gps upgrade; I also now own the Alfa antennae as well. I can say now after $500, I have a solid first quad. Does it compare to the mavic that just arrived? Not at all; but, it's really a joy to fly.

the GPS was a M8N upgrade module I purchased that is virtually plug and play if you are comfortable removing around 10 screws. There are some great videos of this process I followed here on youtube as well. The antennae for the controller were some Alfa 2.4Ghz 7dbi RP-SMA Panel type. There are better ones available though. 3DR pilots is a good resource on this bird, I highly recommend it if you own a gopro. If not, get a P3.

I don't like the fisheye distortion of the GoPro 4 and when you change the lens of the GoPro 4 to the 4.35mm lens, I can't find excellent quality video samples on youtube. Comes down to overall image quality..

DUDE......I feel ya' man. I purchased one of their X-8 mapping drone and had it shipped to my office in Nome, Alaska where it NEVER FLEW CORRECTLY, much less do any mapping chores. This unit was never bench tested before it left TJ (or San Diego) and centainly not flight tested as I was lead to believe. To make a long, sad story short, I had to contact Mr. Anderson personally to get my hard fought refund. What a shame, the Pix4 autopilot really rock hard though.....

so glad i never looked at the solo drone. when i started looking at what drone i wanted to get i started looking of amazon and at the reviews and recommendations until i stopped by the dji website and for the phantom 4 and found the mavic pro. after that all the review videos where so impressive i had no choice but to spend more than i thought i would for a recreational drone and placed the order for the mavic pro. True...but it would not have come with the gimbal and 2 extra batteries. BestBuy sells the solo drone on sale for 299.00 but no 3 axis gimbal and only one battery. Figure the gimbal is around 50 bucks and the batteries are around 100 bucks each.

I totally agree with you. This is the biggest P.O.S. that I have purchased. The HYPE intro in my opinion was FRAUD. Flying out of the HANGER was impossible. I only wanted it with the gimbal, and had to wait , burning warranty time. Now my gimbal will not properly function. All the controls work but no video to the screen. If they know this thing will not work and they are not making anymore, how do they honor the warranty.? And in California the Warranty law says parts for 7 years, and they are a Ca. Based Company. I feel like flying mine through a shotgun competition.

The guy that used to own my Solo before me didn't like it much either, I could tell because it was broken and i bought it off him dirt cheap, I fixed the little guy and have not had a single problem with it. many dji products have similar problems on launch and many issue are over played and are usually due to user error.

I don't like any video that states people shouldn't buy a product they have reviewed or had bad experiences with unless they have reviewed a lot of similar units or know the unit inside out and are experts with the technology. Its sad to hear about the demise of 3DR but at the time I bought mine the tech was pretty awesome and I've got many videos with awesome footage. It was only a matter of time before manufacturers designed smaller lighter drones but the Solo had a lot of tech that other companies only wished for at the time. I'm sorry you had a bad time but just because you did doesn't mean everyone will.

I have the Mavic and I absolutely love it. Not one hassle out of it like I had with the Solo. It's also shipping within a week now if you order direct from DJI. I would only keep the Solo if you're prepared to work on it and tweak it yourself. You'll end up having to replace the GPS unit and use third party apps for flying it. It will get technical. Timothy Sunday I just took my solo out for a flight. I do see little quirks that it does that are annoying. I have a question, what kind of actual flight times are you getting out of your mavic? If I take my solo back do you think I should go for the mavic or the phantom 4 pro?

I get about 28mins of normal flying and about 23-25 if I'm in Sport mode flying around at 40mph all the time. Which is super fun. Mavic vs P4p is all determined on what your uses. The Mavic can go places there is no way I would have been able to get the Solo. It literally just fits in my DSLR bag with the rest of my kit. The P4pro has a larger sensor and higher quality camera if the highest possible production quality is your goal. For me, getting more opportunities to fly the Mavic because it's always with me is worth the small sacrifice in quality. And overall, it flies MUCH smoother than the solo ever did.

Timothy Sunday Timothy Sunday yeah, mostly my goal is just to fly. Catch some cool video of my Polaris RZR. I'm likely going to return the solo. I must say though, I just took it on a range flight and it dropped at 7,000 feet. I'm in an area with trees and stuff. I panicked because I know the issues with the gps. But 30 seconds later the remote came back and solo was headed home. I tested the follow me on solo and the follow me was amazing. It kept up with my Polaris RZR (not running full speed on my rzr) it kept me in the picture nicely. Even getting some awesome side shots and stuff. So my question on that topic is how is the mavic with follow me mode? I've read a few places the mavic will lose its target often. Is that true? To sum up what I'll mostly do, vacation footage, follow me on my Polaris RZR. That's about it. lol

I bought mine last week because it says "compatible with GoPro Hero 3+".... WRONG .... It should say it's only compatible with 3+ Black as it doesn't work with the 3+ Silver which I have. After 5+ hours trying to figure out why the hell the drone doesn't let me control my GoPro, I find out my GoPro is not compatible, even with me rolling back to version 2.0. I'm seriously considering returning it and waiting for GoPro's drone. So frustrated !

+Aaron Macfarlane oh man, that's terrible. If you're for sure wanting to utilize the GoPro, I would probably look at the Karma system. But be sure it is compatible with the GoPro as well. Timothy Sunday I'll look into the Karma - it's not out till next spring I hear. I am willing to wait till next year and then the gopro 4 will drop in price considerably, and maybe go with that then. I am by no means using the video footage for pro purposes, so I don't 'need' the gimbal and cine feel. I appreciate the review tho and will stick with the 3DR for now. It was a gift, so I would feel bad having to return it. It does do what I want for now... Just took many hours troubleshooting to get there.

This is incorrect information. I spoke with 3DR. It's not discontinued they're are just plenty of them on the market as of right now. When supply diminish they will produce more but they are not discontinuing at all. It is a very good drone for $400.

the Solo has enough bad press that I think Tim isn't alone in having issues with the unit... and if it was still $1500 for a full kit I think they'd have a lot of trouble shifting them (I sure wouldn't buy one)... but for $400 on amazon with control, backpack, and two sets of spare blades IMO it's easily worth the risk (if you already have a camera). Sure you needed to spend another $80 to get the GPS upgrade... but that's still ~1/3 the price of comparable machines.

Jump ahead to 2022..Wrong!.. Do buy one (for the right price) and install Open Solo 4 !! Still a great drone if you have technical abilities. One thing bad I can say is the smart batteries (no longer manufactured) have reached their life cycle and although there are solutions, this will cause a big problem, but also will allow used Solos to be purchased very cheaply in the future. I bought mine for $75.00 complete with a lot of extras. I had to reflash it, but I think it was worth it.

The solo were doomed from day one, they promiced far more then they could deliver, the gimbal they got made for it have been a disaster, unstable and vibrating, and it shows left leg and propellers in the image so the design was far off, And 2/3 solos had problems with the elektronic inside, 3dr made this as the "firs" smart drone, but phantom already had the same and more, 3dr promiced that this quad should be developed in future with extra gear in accesory bay, but its already to heavy, its only last 14min on a battery now and with more gear it would be less then 10min and more stress on the motors. I like to tinker and modify things. Aftermarket support and open source make it a win win for the price. Hopefully someone will develop a new gimbal that works with better cameras. When that happens it's will be tough to beat given the price point.

I would remove the video. Like many tech equipment, there will be hiccups. Although I may not recommend the Solo for the beginner, it is a well piece of equipment that with enough knowledge and practice someone can achieve numerous of creative tasks with. I hesitated to purchase one because of your video, but after further research from other You tubers I found that the possibilities for this drone far exceeds it limits it has. The phantom line from DJI has great reviews and then phantom 3, although not the most current, is still a great drone and can be found for a cheaper price.

If you build gaming PCs and regularly void warrantees get a solo, for get the geofenced corperately manged drones you never really own becuase the flight software can be pulled at any time and your drone landed... yep RTF drones with an app are licensed and if they decide your drone should land or not fly well they can do that. Buy a solo it will be the last smart drone without a geofenced lockout on the market that's even near RTF. Other than that you can get a TBS Blacksheep drone, but don't expect a gimbal. Camera platform drones are being targeted by govenrment for anti press regulation, and they are doing this at the manufacturer level.. so TFR issuance and cell phone link means no camera platform, which means all manner of violent crime can go unrecorded, as well as failure to assist in disaster recovery, sorry TFR no evidence for you so say the Orwelian masters.

I am not a fan of BBB gripes and this video is a perfect example. The negative travels light speed in comparison to the positive. As has been suggested, check out 3drpilots.com. With the information available on that site, the deeply discounted bundle is well worth it. But that is just my opinion and it is not for everyone. But, having an article read to me on KZbin is not for me either. In my line of work, I actually use magazine articles as contrarian indicators.

Yea, for $379 it's probably worth the risk. If you replace the GPS with this one store.mrobotics.io/category-s/109.htm and it will correct much of the fly-off and drifting problems. Add these extended antennas and it will be fairly reliable fpvlr.com/store/product/solo-v-2-long-range-kit-10-5dbi/. The other issue is many new users don't understand that the first thing you have to do is recalibrate the drone. Do all this and the above and it should be ok. If not, remove the inners and put them to use on another build.

I have several of these and all fly great as do a lot of others. Can't find this kind of performance and video shot capability in any other drone for the current sale price. Too bad for 3DR, but the drone works great. Old news BTW. Why don't you buy another brand and do a new review. A bit of a broken record. I have several brands of drones, and prefer the Solo over others. Solo will continue to fly without 3DR.

honestly for 400 it's worth buying as a starter and honestly I've met a lot of people with the 3dr and I've seen a lot of reviews and it's still a positive. I'm sorry you have a sour taste for it and you seem to have a grudge since you keep repeating it. I can understand if the Drone was 1200 but for 400 it's still worth trying it out as a starter. Shoot even Lou from Unbox Therapy showcased it and seemed to have a good experience. I see in the beginning with it having problem but so far with the updates it seems to be fine. Maybe you abused your batteries? I have four Solo batteries and two Solo's and I always get 15+ minutes carrying a gimbal and GoPro, and 20+ minutes when flying with no gimbal or GoPro. This is allowing for a margin of at least 25% that is important to prevent battery damage.

Hes on here telling you not to buy a drone that you can pick up new on eBay for $220 bucks ..I would love to hear what drone you can buy other than this one that has the same features for the amount of money this will cost you?I'm guessing you can't because I couldn't even build one for that price .I do recommend upgrading the GPS which is like a $35 part if you find yourself having GPS connection problems .

Why are you talking about this like it's a revelation. This news is months old, catch up. I am guessing the Solo is your first drone, as some of the information you say does not make sense. You keep regurgitating info without any actual knowledge yourself. People knew 6 months ago where this was heading, but the thing you miss is 3DR are not a drone company, they are primarily a software company with some hardware. 3DR ALWAYS stated that they were never making a Solo 2 and NEVER had plans for replacing it as it was to be an evolving system. To this day is still has the best flight modes of any consumer drone with more options aimed at industry (power cable kit, sitescan, etc). The thing that irritates me most of all is that you bash it stating that fly aways are pretty much commonplace. You did say that it doesn't happen to everyone but you give no number son percentages. If you looked up the stats on DJI P3, P4, and Inspire fly aways you would know that the solo was far less susceptible. Ignoring the fact that in its height 3DR gave an unconditional warranty against fly aways covering all equipment attached.

Although I respect your opinion, I would have to say this video is outdated. There is now very active third party support for the flight controller (open source) and software development. Solex is a third party replacement for the Solo App that has many advanced features and is supported. There is a facebook group with 9000 members, some of them extremely experienced. If I post a question there, I usually get help almost instantly. Your comments are almost certainly based on an early release of the drone. The ones being sold now are very likely revised ones with many of the initial problems corrected. Just about any drones have bugs on the early ones that have to be ironed out. Your Mavic (which hopefully you have by now) will probably have some initial problems too, (in addition to the six months you have probably had to wait on it.) Many of the parts in the Solo could, if necessary be replaced with other generic parts. I bought the Solo recently, have several flights on it with no problems. I do agree that the marketing of this drone and some of the behavior on 3 dr's behalf was terrible. I would not recommend it to a total end user type flyer who cannot do a bit of DIY down the line on some parts replacements, but the experienced RC Hobbyist should be fine with it.

A lot of people today buying quadcopters have no rc experience and when they have to maintain or repair something the only thing they know is complain. You are 100% correct James I like the fact that I can use readily available components such as wifi cards, antennas, motors, GPS (the Drotek M8P is ridiculously accurate), aftermarket props by master airscrew, the list just goes on. I should also note that when I move to a different geographical location it pays to do a compass calibration. Mind showing me the Facebook page with 9000 members?
