Quarter 2 Week 1 - Day 3
Today we experiment with maps in Autodesk 3D Studio 2018.
We'll start by using maps in the material editor. This will cover:
1. Importing Maps into the slate material view.
2. Material file name conventions.
3. Various gray-scale maps used for translucency, opacity, specularity, and glossiness.

Can some one explain me how to make metal? i have some aged metal, but in most of the turorials dont explain nothing, and they use v ray, wich i dont give a damn about it lol, thanks.

how to get the same result in mental ray? im rlly bummed uot because i made all those textures with raytrace material and it turns out they don't render with mental ray :(

It does work with MR but you need to check your values to be set high enough. For example, a new MR map has bump map set on 0.3 by default witch is not always showing much on some objects. I made it an habit to set that one to "1" to begin with.

Thank you! I have a problem. When I assign a map to a material. The map doesnt wrap the sphere in the material slot. But I can see the map on the scene on the object which is assigned. Can you help?

Hmmmm, sounds like an odd bug with 3DSMax, is it still missing when you save and restart 3DS? Also, what type of image file are you used?

@@ClaytonDonnan Yes; neither restarting nor erasing and installing 3dsmax. Didn't solve it. I use .JPEGs

Very Good tutorial. Anyone have any thoughts on how to change all of the parameters of a material at once? I was told one of the scripts in Soulburn scripts would o it but I did not see that. The best example is if I am setting up PBR setup and I need to change the tiling of a material. If that PBR material has 5 bitmap slots, such as albedo, specular, normal, displace, etc, how can I change without having to open each one??

That is a very good question, I'm not sure if there is any way to do that in the default system. Especially is you are attempting to move them relatively to one another. You may be able to create a controller node that you can add all of your maps to, but I've never attempted much of that advanced controller stuff. If you figure it out please let me know! Thanks!

Where can you adjust the map amount while in slate editor mode? IN the Compact Mode, I can adjust the amount of the bump, displacement, etc from 0 to whatever.

In the Slate mode you can double click the Material to open the settings window (it;s usually snapped to the right of the slate editor) and then scroll down to the "> Maps" section. If you expand that you will have the same basic options from the compact editor such as amount and map buttons for the Bunp, Spec Color, Glossiness, etc.

Hi Clayton. Great video’s. I know how to make the magenta bump map. But can you explained how to make the red and blue maps.? How can I get the red and blue color on the lines between the stones. Thanks.

@@ClaytonDonnan Yes, i saw that video where you make the normal map using the Nvidia plugin.but i don't see how you make that red and blue color. Do i need to use an adjustment?

i have a problem i plug the normal map in the bump slot and nothing happened i make sure that show shaded material in viewport is on but nothing happened

Did you use the normal map adjustment node? kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaqXlp-GobymhMk or did you just plug in the normal map? (usually mostly a blue image) into the bump channel? I hope this helps!

@@ClaytonDonnan Thanks for the tutorial Calyton! I also havn't been able to get the bump to show, despite directly connecting it to them bump notch and through a Normal Bump. Clicking on 'Realistic Materials with Maps' also doesn't show it.

@@Demour77 Hmmm, did you try using my version of the bump that was included in the description? Sometimes the output format from CS6 is wrong. See if my file will work and if not let me know and I'll troubleshoot some more. Good luck!

I wrote it in college as an option for a commercial that wasn't used. When I needed copyright-free music for this series I dug it out of an old hard drive. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
