Great podcast, this is especially one fans should give a listen to understand the whole Main/Portable team dynamic the franchise has going on, with some insight into how the Portable team differs from the Main team. I'm only 13 minutes in and I find it interesting how Gaijin mentions there being an "animal" focus with Portable team, which explains how they were the ones behind the Palico, aswell as the Prowler mode in GU and now the Palamutes in Rise.

1:17:13 how I feel about charms and decos i see it as you craft decos and farm charms because if you can't get the right decos you're going to have a bad time and if you can't find the right charm then your armor is going to be still good

This is how I see it. It's definitely easier or harder for certain weapon users, like it's easier to build for LS when all you may really want is quick sheathe and then you're free to build how you like. Whereas GL needs artillery, load shells, and sharpness management for better damage (worse if you like guard skills). All that said, I still prefer the Rise system because I'd rather take a charm with crap skills and awesome slots while I can make any deco I want 😛

The main thing I’d really want to see return in any future instalment in the series, are guild quests and decipher scrolls from 4U. The guild quest system in my opinion was the most flushed out endgame loop system because you’d have quests that get stronger and more difficult as you completed them each time, the monsters having a chance to become either frenzied or Apex, and the map layout of the map sometimes being random each time you entered. And the rewards were in a league of its own, depending on when you select a quest there was a chance of there being a treasure area where you were able to gather relic weapons and armour that could be appraised at the end of the quest into extremely powerful gear, on top of the quest itself already giving relic rewards (also each different guild quests always offered different classes of armor and weapons depending on the monster). And the only way to appraise such weapons was items you’d get from fighting frenzied monsters which bolsters the incentive to keep fighting them over and over again. There’s honestly a whole lot more that can be said about how well they did the guild quests, but another cool thing they did were the decipher scrolls, where after you completed the last urgent in the g-rank hub, you’d get the scrolls containing hidden messages that slowly solved itself over time depending on the quests you did almost like a puzzle, and upon solving a scroll you’d unlock a mystery monster to fight It’s things like that, that make 4U’s endgame system unrivalled in my opinion, if they were to ever bring something of that calibre back, everyone would go insane
@mhk6943

I agree 4U's Guild Quest system was the best endgame system despite its flaws for me personally. I didn't care much about the reward system personally but I loved the challenge of lv140 monsters so much even though I was never able to slay most of them. I was so disappointed when Iceborne's Guiding Lands didn't have a similar challenge.
@jordanbutler6702
@jordanbutler6702 2 жыл бұрын
@@mhk6943 Like you said, the GQ system had an good idea but poor execution on monster balance. While hardcore players might have participated more in this area of the game, I'm sure they cut back on systems like this after observing what the majority of players take part in the endgame. The decipher scrolls were basically just a HR cap that was hidden behind cool story/npc interaction with gameplay so I'm sure something like that is safe to return in some way eventually

There is a very good way to know ahead of time how many new maps a G-rank expansion will have. It worked for Iceborne and I bet it'll work for Sunbreak too: In World, there was space for six different maps in the large monster notes for the maps the monsters appear in. In base game five of those were used with a suspicious empty spot left vacant. That empty spot was later filled with Hoarfrost Reach in Iceborne. Now in base Rise we have space for six different maps in the large monster notes, with five of them being used and one suspicious empty spot left vacant. So any and all realistic predictions should point to one new map being added in Sunbreak, just like pretty much every G-Rank expansion has done. Of course there could be a special map like Guiding Lands that doesn't need special mention in the large monster notes, but I think predicting three new maps is a pretty unreasonable speculation.

For what it's worth, it's literally never taken me 7-8 hours of grinding in any monster hunter game to make an armor set. The only exception is the few sets that require a gem, but even then I feel like it took more like 4 hours total.

To Gaijin's point of playing Rise on PC: I originally played on switched constantly docked, so on PC for me it's similar but runs even smoother except when I get freezing and DC from multiplayer. There's a couple noticeable things on PC, like the UI HUD is huge if you don't sit that far from the screen. This was way less noticeable on Switch for me. There's a good mod for scaling down UI that's nice for that. It'd be cool if they could add that in the actual game

My dream charm system for Monster Hunter would be crafting a Blank one with no skills but to obtain skills for it you would have to fight the monster that would give you that skill in armor. Maybe you could go on a quest with specific monsters and you would obtain skills according to the order you hunted them.

I'm glad you guys cleared this up. A lot of youtube monster hunter content creators talk as if World and Rise are experiments on what direction the game will go, over what content they are willing to supply. I prefer Rise content over world just because the movement of monsters through a cluttered environment honestly ruined my immersion of the game. It felt less like dealing with the world and the monster and more like here are obstacles that only the player will have to deal with and not the monster like an obstacle course thing in old platform games. For example Rathalos going to small arena zones but keeping his aerial mobility with seeing both wings clip through the wall of both sides of the small arena at the same time. Makes no sense but whatever, game isn't for me. As long as I know Rise like Monster Hunter games will always be made then I don't care what direction the "World" series will go.

A big problem of the handhelöd-home console straddling on Switch in my opinion is UI scaling. That's also really important in my opinion, ESPECIALLY for font sizes and cluttery menus. There's quite a few indies clearly designed with PC in mind that I personally can't play in handheld mode because I cannot comfortably make out the text without straining my eyes. Besides gameplay loop, that's also super important, but it seems to get glossed over more and more as text sizes become smaller and smaller to make UI less and less intrusive.

A bit late, but I REALLY want to clear up some misinformation at 56:50 Rajang and Shagaru being the only monsters that can drop the best relic weapons is entirely wrong, and in actual fact ANY guild quest at level 140 can do so. The only thing that changes between monsters is how many chances you get at earning these "Beshackled Weapon" drops per clear, but essentially every elder dragon, apex monster, and even Brachydios, Black Diablos, and Brute Tigrex has good drops. If you wanted a weapon skin associated with any of the weaker guild quest monsters this was still very doable by getting a guild quest that pairs it with one of the monsters with good drops. I also wouldn't say that relic weapons invalidated crafted weapons, because life hone and defense hone, which were both powerful effects, were exclusive to crafted weapons.

I think a bulk of the community has disrespected Rise from the start because it was put on Switch and the whole idea of the “portable” and “mainline” teams have given them more ammunition to call Rise a derivative product or spinoff. It makes things even worse when people say the next monster hunter game is going to be “World 2” and will somehow return to “the good times.” Certain content creators have been preemptively calling the next game “World 2” and it’s a shame that these people with more visibility in the community further propagate the disrespect for Rise.

World had such a huge worldwide success, that it's normal to have franchise noobs, who think they know everything because they've played World for 500 hours... Since 2006 i basically played every Monster Hunter Game so I can feel your frustration when people who just dipped their toes in it, think they know what they are talking about. But in the end, it's a good thing to have millions and millions of people who play those masterpieces and then it's just a numbers game... I am of the opinion that we could eventually do away entirely with Talisman and Decoration RNG. A system where you craft empty charms and have to meld your decorations into the charm to get skills onto the charm could lead to a logical progression that would never lock people out specific builds.
@b.b6656
@b.b6656 2 жыл бұрын
I agree but also I kind of disagree. Being unable to build the builds you want is a bummer for sure, no arguing about that. But MH needs some RNG stuff. Recently i replayed Freedom Unite and back in the day, the monsters where a bigger, time consuming thing. So getting a G-rank (Gunner OR Blademaster) armor was really a 20-30 hour journey. For weapons you had to do the same stuff again and resources for the hunts where scarce too. RNG was basically only applied to quest and carve rewards. Nowadays you can easily get a whole armor set in a few quick hunts, without ever worrying about mega potions or traps and ammo and you get a lot of monster parts, with much more ways to improve your odds. So either there has to be even more content in modern monster Hunter, slower pace with more scarcity like 15 years ago, or there has to be some kind of extra RNG, to keep the masses engaged.

The break any skill limit destroyed any armor set bonus. For example, edgy Why would anyone ever use gold rathian set? You can stack virtually all skills in one armor. With the exception Safi, Alatreon, Valkanna and shara Isvalda, there's no reason to use other armors. Fatalis armor breaks the game. It's why I can't play any charaters that beat Fatalis and has asses to it's gear. Simply because it's in the game kills the motivation to play. Its like playing a game where the developers put a cheat device in the game. It feels wrong and it's a barrier to stop me from playing.

I agree with a lot that is said save a few things. I do believe that Monster Hunter World is the objectively better game when it comes to polish and the overall experience. Rise felt like it was rushed out during the pandemic, the story not being complete on release is evidence of a struggle in development. I think if it had been delayed a little bit to get some of the big content patches into the base game it would have made for a much better game.

Also it could have given the other team much more time for the next big thing. But I don't think it's a japanese mentality, to not deliver in difficult times. And I think Rise was more than good enough: New engine, very good looking game on an old handheld. Future simultaneous releases on PC and Switch. A lot of really good content. They gave us more for our money than most other companies and that for sure has to be appreciated. But in the end, Capcom always listens to the fans. I'm sure they've learned a lot from the Rise release last year and they will improve.

That kind of depends with how you define "polish" doesn't it? Sure when it comes to the story, Rise did feel incomplete at the start, since they essentially paused the game at the equivalent progression of beating Nergigante in World. At the same time, when it came to the palicoes and palamutes, there were far more customization and experimentation to be done in Rise than World. For someone coming off of GU, it felt great that they brought back that aspect of content while streamlining it a good deal (and in hindsight, makes me feel Worldborne cut a lot of corners there). Not to mention that when it comes to the actual "objective" stuff (maybe better termed "technical"?) - like performance consistency, loading time, connectivity, cutscenes in multiplayer and so on, Rise was far more polished. The endgame loop of Rise seems far less well-thought out than World to be sure, but to say the overall experience of World is "objectively better" seems like a a bit of stretch.

@@b.b6656 Yeah Rise is still good, as are pretty much all Monster Hunter games. I just would have liked a proper endgame loop and a complete game at launch instead of doing 2 big patches that should have been included in the base game.

@@Zero0mtk For me polish just meant the overall feeling of the game. It felt more complete at launch, the environment designs were a true evolution and it felt like the hunting experience as a whole had been brought to a new level. I know it's not possible for Rise to achieve the same results but it definitely feels like a game where they are just trying new mechanics. Kind of like a test for Gen 6 once that comes out to see if any underlying mechanics in Rise draw lots of attention. It just doesn't have that same polish in that sense as to me it seems like a "testing the waters" type game.

@@nubitynub1757 yup i agree. Also i feel they cut corners in Rise by removing half the armor sets and not giving armor for apexes. And then all the effort goes to the cash shop. It definitely felt like there was less effort put into the actual game and all the budget went to marketing and hype instead

I hope everyone enjoys sunbreak, I will be skipping over it Rise is too fast and flashy for me. AS such I've got tons of wants for MH6, some of these could be implemented into sunbreak. I would love to see underwater combat and seasons implemented in MH6. It would help to extend the time getting through the story and help build immersion as it would turn the game into a deeper world. Seasons would also work well with festivals as the festivals often were themed around holidays and celebrations. Having festivals tied to in game seasons would show the passage of time and help give a deeper look into the civilization of MH. What if they celebrate different holidays? Now having seasons would also change the access to different monsters, for those who don't enjoy being locked out of fights I've got a solution. Around the village there could be kids, elders, and other hunters who would like to here stories from you. Kids would come and find you, hunters will chat when near quest boards and the canteen, elders would have to be found around the villages, they will ask you to tell them stories of your hunts, sometimes they have specific request. Depending on the season the table of monsters they may specifically want changes to match the monsters you can't fight on quests. There can even be rewards, hunters will buy you a meal at the canteen and elders might give you zenny or a consumable. There will however be no monster rewards as you are just remembering an event, retelling your experience to others shouldn't give materials. This also helps to build immersion and breathes some much needed life into the villages. I would also like some more minigames to play when in the village darts could be cool, if they don't have darts they could use knives or something else. I would also like a trade system, this is to help players get materials. The way it would work is at the quest reward screen you can offer up all the items you got and trade with another player from that hunt. This could also be done during the countdown after the quest objective has been completed. To counteract this whenever a player faints, on top of the zenny reward going down all the items from the field pouch are lost. I would really like the stakes to be raised when on a quest, having the consequence of losing items that were gathered from mining nodes, bone piles, or even the carving of tails/other parts that come of like barroth scalp. I want the games to be more difficult and if that won't be done then at least make it a greater punishment's for carting. Everyone does it but it would be nice for the game to push you into getting better.

Man, how you describe the season mechanics literally sound like a live service MMO type of game loop that World experimented with timed events. Last I checked, that wasn't particularly well-received by series fans? I don't know how you envision the season cycle to work (in-game clock or real-world time?), but it sure sounds like a game designed to get people to play as frequently as possible (to not miss any monster material), as long as possible (just like how the limited-time Kulve and Safi grind did). It does sound like an interesting template for a Monster Hunter MMO though, if they'd ever make one, or they remake Frontier on a modern platform or something.

@@Zero0mtk I know lots of people don't like it but I enjoy the rotation. The event quests changing would focus the player to go for specific goals. Depending on what options were available then you might do different quests depending on which events you want to do. For seasons it could be an in game clock. When going through the story different "chapters" are locked to different seasons. The game could have you go around the old world villages. I don't like this but most monsters in 5th gen are not important weaker monsters don't need to be farmed and element/status has been way too underpowered for far too long. I love having builds built around specific monsters but it's usually not worth it as a basic set figured on raw damage will either be the same or do better.

@@Zero0mtk it would extend the time people keep an eye on the game but they could make sure to not put any true live service mechanics. Say if the game came out with all the content it would get. All event quests would be available from the starts same with monsters. I would really like for MH to just put out a game and updates would only be for big fixes. We just play the game Finnish what we want and then wait till they release the next game/expansion.

@@lijahgil Yeah I get that, but the game structure would be inevitably closer to a live service MMO wouldn't it? If the in-game clock would always lock you out of certain contents at a given time (regardless of what HR you are at), it would create 2 types of "forcing" to the player: on one hand, it forces the player to move the in-game clock (is it tied to quest completions? Is there an in-game "sleep" option to move the season?), on the other hand, it forces the player to grind as much as possible during the target season (especially since you seem to want to make the grind even more punishing than old school MH). On a related note, what happens when you join a hub and someone posts a quest from a different season? It's certainly one interesting way to incentivize people to go and communicate online, but that also has its own drawback as well (Guild Quest filtering in 4U comes to mind). And while I agree with wanting elements to matter (I play SnS dammit!), I don't see how the season-based quest structure would help, to be honest. If anything, certain monsters being locked away would disincentivize people from building many sets, 'cause you just can't build it when you need it. The answer to the raw-element imbalance is just removing/nerf Crit Boost, or removing element cap imo. Or improve elemental hitzones of monsters. Again, I am not saying your ideas are bad or uninteresting. They just don't seem to merge well with a traditional "mainline" Monster Hunter, that's all. If anything, I think this model SHOULD be built with a full-on live service planning, not a "have my cake and eat it too" mentality of trying to do both but possibly ending up being half-baked at best.

@@Zero0mtk I agree with the implementation being difficult and that working it into monster hunter would likely lead to less apeal as MH Dos had it and most people don't talk about it. As far monster availability most of them don't have ties to specific times and as such would be around for a long time. Mizutsune is really the main monster that would be affected by seasons as the males are very aggressive during mating season. Now there could be quests to fight mizutsune due to other reasons such as research or an individual being to close to the village but those would be quest that are very specific. Most monsters I would leave alone and just reference the availability of monsters in Dos to influence monster availability. Species that exclusively live in an individual map or ecosystem would likely still be available as they cant just leave, and monster that live in environments that aren't changed very much would also still be available. For the assage of time it would likely be based of the amount of quests done or an actual in game clock, I still don't really know what is the best way to do it. There would be a sleeping option to skip a season as well as the ability to go to other villages. Going off of our World and it's Old/New world the Old world is significantly larger. If there is enough distance between villages we could move around to avoid seasons. There could also be villages that are more/less affected due to location such as being near the equator or close to a pole. When it comes to element the easiest fix would be to adjust the values, granted there would be 3 parts to it. Adjustments would need to be made to the weapons, monsters, and skills. 1st of the elemental portion of every weapon should do more damage, now heavy weapons can still focus on raw but getting more damage squeezed out by element would possibly lead to using a different weapon with the same build depending on the monster. For example using Goss harag greatsword instead of tigrex, but nargacuga is still OP so that isn't enough of a change. For the monster simply raising the elemental weakness of each monster would help, especially the later monsters. The player should not specialize there gear until they have gotten pretty far considering how much of an investment element/status is. Making apex and elder monster considerably weaker to element/status would push players into using those weapons instead of just reusing the same builds. Rise and World pushed players into stacking raw boosting skills to the max. The final adjustment would be to the very skills that influence element/status, they simply don't do enough. I believe returning to the old skill system would shift build focus, if that was paired with the Alpha/Beta sets of Worldborne then there would be more customization. With the old sill system there are tighter restriction which means that investing all into attack boost, wex, and crit boost is gonna be dificult especially when there are other things to worry about. 3 points to each skill also make it easier to compare element and status. With 2 levels to the element skill they both will give a flat amount of element with level 2 giving a 20% bonus on top. I think the decoration system that World and Rise use would be great as the element/status decos can be the small/level 1 while attack boost and other such raw boosts would be medium/level 2. Having it be both easier to raise element would make it a more desirable option. However that isn't enough Crit Element/ Crit status should be 1 skill that is very powerful. The skill really needs to boost element making it equal to True Critical Element in Iceborne would be great as the skill was pretty useful there despite quickly being overthrown. Other skills such as Namiele's and Safi's set bonus should return but be only available with the value of the True versions of the skills.
