300k mile review of my 2018 3rd gen Tacoma.

Hey man, consider sanding those headlights and using 2k clear coat on it to make them glossy again for ever + put some LED bulbs for the headlights since they’re a lot safer and illuminate much more

17 Taco with 222,000 .All maintenance by myself. Fluids , brakes, tires, and one windshield. Run hard hauling firewood, about hundred ton of balsam boughs, traplines , and fishing trips. Never to far to drive to trap or fish. This is my third Toyota. 91 has 383,000 still going. 2000 has 326,000 still going . Hit two deer broadside one November day , that's what brought on the purchase of the 17 . All Amsoil every 5000 miles religiously. Can't say enough about how tough those trucks are.

I found out that Toyota switched to a 4 cyl Turbo for 24, so I started looking for a late model 3rd Generation. In 2/29/24 I found a 23 TRD Off Road, Premium pkg with a 6’ bed. There’s plenty of 5’ beds, but the 6’ is very hard to find. The Tacoma had only 6K miles. It booked out for $51,500 and I bought it for $48K. I’m pushing 60 years old and retired so I drive only about 5-6K miles per year. I’ll be driving my Tacoma until I can no longer drive or I’m dead.

I cannot believe the factory clutch lasted that long! That's amazing. I recently got a 19 with 39k and they had just replaced the clutch because apparently who ever had it could not drive a manual well. That or they thought they were doing one wheel peels and they were really burning up the clutch lol

Here is the thing to remember, are you towing and making it a work horse like his? HE needs to do 5k for sure with hauling and working everyday. if youre a daily. 10K is solid. Just a matter of what you do with the truck. Im a happy medium with 8K mile changes.

It's has a 6.2 qt. oil capacity so that helps.

It depends what kind of oil you use. I have a 2016 Lexus IS300 which has a similar engine to this and I change my oil with full synthetic every 10k. If you use just basic oil you will probably want to do it in the range of 5-8k. But it also depends how hard you work your engine and what kind of driver you are as well.

i aimt for 5k oil changes i have a 05 4runner 4.0 it has 220k i am planning on doing the leaking valve covers soon bit in a 5k oil change it looses about a quart of fluid so i just change it at that point.

That’s incredible I have a 21 TRD OR just like yours 4x4 with a automatic trans , I bought brand new and now has 40k miles on it , I absolutely love it , it tows good , it’s a beast for off road and I’m getting 24 mpg on highway , I’ve learned to use 91 octane fuel after switching from 87 octane the truck just ran better and fuel lasted longer and it was more responsive, thanks for sharing and please keep us posted on your Tacoma . You can use 87 octane but the truck will feel like a dog , the 3.5L that’s in the Tacoma has high compression ratio of 11.6:1 it will liven up after a few fill ups of 91 , my wife’s Lexus GS350 has the same motor and it says use 91 octane when you open the fuel door . This 2GR-FKS is a beast of a motor it’s very robust it has a 6 bolt main . Louts has it in their sports car it’s the exact motor they borrowed it from Toyota and pumps out almost 500 hp..

The sedan has a full time AWD 70/30 planetary xfercase with a lockup if it slips. Very reliable setup. I use regular gas in mine, maybe it would have a bit more power.

450k on my 04 tundra. Been pushing 33s E rated tires since 320k. Had a trailer brake controller when I got it at 292k from original owner so I assume it saw decent trailers prior. Dump trailers, landscape trailer, equipment trailers all been behind it. From mowers, sxs, mini excavators, mini skid steers, to pallets of materials have all been behind it. (5) 30 hour road trips to Mexico. Still kicking it on original power train and drivetrain. Everything works as it should. I stay on top of maintenance and swing oem parts as much as I can. Just got another water pump, timing belt, did all front engine seals, and an oil filter housing seal replaced. Worst thing I have had is a radiator go and a thermostat stick. Also had an aftermarket ubj slug pop out of the spindle. Been an amazing truck though. I would drive it to Mexico rn zero hesitations.

I love how this vid showed up in a sea of vids whining about trivial Tacoma problems that mean nothing or boo hooing because the auto trans hunts for gears or it's missing a soccer mom comfort feature. This is why Tacomas still hold value. My favorite part is you trying to think of something that needed to be replaced lol. I have the same truck with 100k and minimal changes, it doesn't manage near the loads that yours does so I expect it'll probably last a lot longer. Thanks for posting this.

Had a '16 SR5 Access Cab 2.7 2WD when I was stationed in desert. Moved back home to northern WI, it towed my boat {Nitro 4.88's} and did ok with snow tires but I traded it for '18 F150 2.7 4WD. 40k miles later on the Ford, i just traded it for another SR5 Access Cab 3.5 4WD. This configuration just feels like home to me, the SR5 suspension is the plushest riding truck Iv ever been in. Super light steering, manueverable in city/woods, and the bed is almost as big as the 6.5ft Ford truck bed. I will miss the instant 400ft lb torque and that 10 speed trans, but over all the Ford was more than I needed. Im used to the 6 speed auto in the Tacoma, Im actually impressed by the 3.5 after everyone bashed it. With an intake and keeping the OEM tire size on it goes pretty good and i can get 24.9 keeping it under 70mph highway.

@@verlaryder The Hitachi's on the SR and SR5's are plush and their 16" wheels have more cushion. The Offroad and Sport upgraded suspension is rougher, but handle better at fast speeds {which i care nothing bout, its a mid size truck} The door sticker says 32psi cold, which heats up to 34 usually and is way to hard unless hauling/towing. I run mine 30 cold, and at 32 on highway its plenty stiff. Cooper AT3 4S, Hancook HT, and Michelin LTX especially soften the jarring bumps in the road.

Thank you for posting this. I have an automatic V6 access cab 2022 Off Road trim. I use it for only camping stuff and I work at home so I'm not going to rack miles as fast. It's good to know that the V6 can make it to 300k bc lots of people doubt it in comparison to the reputable V4. You abate my fear. And no, I'm not going to tune it since it never bother me that much. Unless someone who tuned their car gets 300k+ then I'll reconsider.

That's very impressive. I have a 2020 SR5 4x4 that I purchased new in July 2020. Currently only have 23,000 miles on it. Only trouble has been the stock battery and the dealership replaced it under warranty with an 84 month warranty Toyota sure start. I been changing my oil every 5,000 miles doing it myself when I was still covered by Toyota care. I've was using Shell gas truck 0w20 but not been able to get that so I been using Supertech 0w20. Was already planning to use ravinoil and redline in the transfer case and diff. My plan was to care for and keep this truck for 10 years or more. With fluid film and good maintenance and the miles I'm putting on her it might take me 20 years to get to 300,000

I got a 2020 TRD Off-Road and can confirm the stock batteries are kinda crap. Mine died on me out of nowhere and it should have lasted longer. However I replaced it with a very nice interstate AGM battery which has been fantastic. No issues ever since.

i have an 18 with the stock battery lol. Need to do something about that i guess. I did redline in all the diffs and cases, and use Pennzoil ultra platinum oil. The ultra platinum is just about as good as amsoil and redline, but at half the cost. Its a little harder to find than the regular platinum, but the ultra platinum is worth ordering.

@Chiam Rosenberg-Steinwitz Penzoil is definitely good stuff all product levels they sell. Changing fluids regularly is one of the things that I have learned extends life and often avoids some issues with vehicles.

I bought my 02 Silverado new, the check engine light has never came on ever, has original alternator, belt, plugs and hoses, 400k miles, but I’ve all ways garaged it and change oil every 3k miles, it still runs great, the newer Chevys aren’t as reliable, electric fans computer etc, I also put 285k on my 07 Colorado and 300k on my Chevy HHR, IT is how you take care of it, I also own a new Tacoma, I will NEVER change every 10k like Toyota recommends, every 5, they do use Mobil 1 I do believe my 02 Chevy is more reliable than the newer ones! That’s why you still see so many early 2000s still on the road!

It’ll easily go another 300-600k with regular maintenance. Some would say hauling all that wood is overloading it but I’ve seen em tow way more. The only thing that might stop it is rust if you live in a snowy climate.

Wrangler you are correct. I own the 2013 2nd Gen Taco TRD Sport with the 4.0L V6 and I pull a trailer similar to one in this video. I load it with fire wood and fire wood in the back of the bed of the truck. These Taco are work horses for sure.

Nice. I’ve got a 2021 6-speed manual. 46,000 miles. Only “issue” I’ve had or essentially gotten used to is the “clunking” sensation you get if you’re in 6th gear and if you let off the accelerator, then go to resume speed, you’ll feel a “clunking” sensation. Took it to dealership at 3500 miles when I first noticed it. Told its normal characteristic of this drivetrain. Idk. My 5th manual transmission. Never noticed that on my other vehicles. Runs fine. Found out this past weekend, if you have it running at more than a 45° angle (on a decline), within minutes it’ll say “contact dealer immediately, no oil pressure”. As soon as I leveled the truck, that notice went away.

Mine will sometimes do that. Been that way since new. Change transmission/transfer case/differential oils out with red line brand. It made the clunking almost non existent.

Not good in the mountainous area I live with the E rated tires. 14-15 running 75-80 on interstate. It’ll get 20 ish running 55 on flat ground.

Mine is 2013, 226 k (2nd gen). Spark plugs and u joints replaced this year The rest was basic maintenance...fluids, tires and a battery in 2022. Been to the Arctic ocean once...still original shocks. Drives the same as when I drove it off the lot

I have a 2016 with 53k miles only, and hoping that it lives up to the Toyota reputation by lasting me another 20 years, so I don't have to buy some newer POS. It's nice to see that there's people out there pushing these into the 300k plus range now, and seeing this kind of reliability out of them. This is tge reason I bought it in the first place.

Awesome 😎! I have a 2018 TRD off-road 6 ft bed auto. I only have 30,000 mi. Lol It doesn't get driven as much as I'd like because I travel a lot and I'm out of town all the time. But I love my truck. It's amazing to see the load that you're putting that to come under and it has lasted so long. That shows you how much Toyota underrates their truck because it looks like you're way beyond Toyota's ratings. I was thinking about towing a 7000 lb boat after watching this I think I should be totally fine. What would you say your total weight is the way your truck is set up right now with that trailer? This definitely gives me hope. It's hard to say how good the automatics are, hopefully not terrible. I have a 22 SR5 that I've had for a little over a year now, I'm hoping to get to this mileage eventually

Change the trans fluid every 60K (for normal driving) and you should be good.

Just take it to the dealer & MAKE SURE they flush it out & change the filter it's a screen if I'm not mistaken from what they were telling me. ❓🤔 But if you get that done I'm sure it will last for almost ever.

You will, the auto trans is solid, very solid. It's just the programming that isn't good. Easy fix. It's built on the exact architecture of the 4runner transmission.

My 20 Sport has 62k with the battery, idler pulleys, serpentine belt, tires are the only issues I had. Running 3 in lift with 265 70 17s. New Tacoma on pre order showing after waiting 10 months and the one I have will be the truck ill use as a mountain truck for camping and off road. Great trucks 👍

holy cow! 53K for a TRD Off Road 4x4 V6. Crazy prices, crazy times. Purchased our new 2020 TRD OR 4x4 with a manual transmission with LED headlights, leather seats plus other stuff for 37k, Currently have 46k miles on it. Never going to get ride of this taco. I can only imagine what the 2024 models are going to cost.

I saw a third gen 4 cylinder for sale on auto trader was a 2018 with 380k. Dealer wanted $16,900 for it ! Might still be on there. Would definitely take a fool to pay that much for it

This is awesome. You look like you use it like a truck too. Bet that trailer is close to the tow capacity now. I have a 2006 tacoma 4.0 I tow a john deere 1025r tractor with and it does fine.

Mannnnn solid truck. This goes to show what just using it as a work truck can be like vs mine. You definitely look like youre "offroad" alot but youre not going out crazy? I got quite a list on mine with 113k but theres stories! Ive replaced my whole power steering system for one! Keep on racking those miles, i do 8K mile oil changes. All i got is a drip around the timing cover. Slow slow leak.

My 2007 Tacoma has 130,000 . It sat is a Police impound lot for 4 years . After the case was finished I bought it at the Auction . 2007 Toyota Tacoma 4.0 lt. I hear great things about the 3.5 v6 though

I wish my 3rd gen tacoma was as reliable as yours. I had rear brake drum problems, leaking rear differential, serpentine belt went out, ac compressor went out and to top it off a rear main seal leak all before 50k miles.
