THANK YOU for such a candid dissection of your thoughts going through med school. I'm considering becoming a doctor and your point of view is refreshingly transparent.

Ya its tough. I thinking sitting down and brainstorming for a personal statement really helped as well. Puts into persecutive what you really care about.

I feel exactly the way you do~ I’m a MS3. I’m trying to choose which speciality and I’m also deciding between surgery and family med. thank you so much for your thoughts.

if you want the best of both worlds, Emergency medicine/ Trauma might be for you? I know a lot of ER docs who can still schedule in shifts but still go to family events and have a life outside the hospital.
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
But I was so jaded during my ER rotation. I started hating my patients and I don't want that.
@llawliet23108 жыл бұрын
+Jenny Le Perhaps then cardiology, opthamology or neurology? having a fellowship in pediatric cardiology would allow you to also form pretty close bonds with your patients as well. You wouldn't be working as hard as a surgeon all the time and could still assist in surgery. Plus, you can travel to different countries for vacation and conferences as well :)

+L Lawliet how is life in neurosurgery?
@llawliet23108 жыл бұрын
+Jenny Le It's amazing. I love every minute of it. Most of the time though we have microscopic surgeries due to aneurysms and whatnot but occasionally we have really interesting cases. I got to assist in a hemispherectomy of a 3 year old with Rasmussen's which is practically unheard of. A lot of neurosurgical residents also have research on the side which I enjoy just as much so I'm usually working in the neurorobotics lab which is fantastic. The only downside, really, to neurosurgery is the gruelling nature of it. We see more deaths and comatose patients than any other sub specialty. The hours are inhuman at times and the memorization of functional neuroanatomy and physiology is just crazy. Our hours can be unpredictable too considering how many times we are paged to the ER. Weird thing is, I don't regret my decision in choosing neurosurgery. There's a huge shortage of them and way too many people in need of us. I enjoy what I do but I do hope we have more advancements in this field to help us understand the nervous system more.

Have you ever dwelled on direct pay/concierge medicine for FM? it's something I'm interested in and I was wondering your take on it.
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
Kaitlyn Kilpatrick I have not had much exposure to concierge medicine so I can't give much input. The plastic surgeons that I rotated with do it and they love it.

Your videos are really inspiring! Currently I am a high school student and would like to one day attend medical school as well. What types of classes did you take in high school that helped you get to where you are today? Did you take any AP classes?

Hey there! I'm having a really hard time deciding between PA school and DO school! Just as you mentioned, the OMM is a MAJOR reason why I would love DO school. Besides the OMM, were there any other factors that helped you decide DO school was the way to go??
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
You have many options as a PA, but ultimately, you will one day work under a physician. I've worked with PAs in the ER, in surgery, with kids, etc - at the end of the day, the last clinical decision is made by the physician or reviewed by the physician. I also wanted to have the option of opening my own private practice ... if it ever comes to that.

So what did you decide on?

FM!

+Jenny Le good luck! Do you want to go back to cali for residency?
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
+Tiffany Vu Financially, it is better for me to attend residency in WA. The pay is more and the tax is less. And they have great loan repayment programs. Eventually we would want to live in California but probably not anytime soon.

@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
I am a DO. MDs and DOs and both physicians. Except as a DO, I learn and practice OMT (osteopathic manipulative treatment)

+Jenny Le what is the difference between DO and MD ??
@Styl3Associt38 жыл бұрын
+sara_kurd from what I always understood DO's practice more preventative and holistic care. the goal is to fix before it begins, as well to try all methods before resorting to medications. MD's more so fix the problem after the fact, and of course resort to medications.I personally have considered the DO.

Im exactly at this point of my life where am confused if to choose Family medicine. i wanna have a life outside medicine and i realize is not all about money. what did u later settle for?
@drjennale8 жыл бұрын
I'm choosing FM. I realized that with the years, the adrenaline and excitement of procedures might fade. I realized that the happiness I feel when I am able to make a positive impact on a patient's life and the continuity is the reason I went into medicine in the first place. Don't worry, your choice will become more clear with more exposure in your third year.
@cynthia11768 жыл бұрын
Thanks dear, yeah am in third year now. At first i wanted to do peds when i was much younger , as i entered medicine deeper i realized kids aren't the only set of patients i wanna deal with. Then people talk of IM and all the various specialties with money and stuff but i just wasn't so intrigued plus it takes longer years. i didn't know much about FM but as i watched more videos and researched i realized its a very good fit for me. Being involved in a patients life from beginning to end and coordinating their care is wonderful. i hope i get to love it more in the nearest future. Are u done with med school?
