4.17 The Heresies-Iconoclasm and the Art-Smashers | Way of the Fathers

Does the devotional use of Christian art and iconography break the commandment against worshiping idols? How and where does one draw the line between legitimate reverence and idolatrous worship? In this controversy - as is often the case - the heresy is a criticism of an ancient practice. And you may be surprised to learn that the related tradition of the veneration of relics is even older!

Enlightening! I thought you might have touched on the loss of sacrifice as true worship and since Catholics do not offer sacrifice to images there is no idol worship going on. Thanks all the same.

All Saints Day is now on November 1 in the West, because Pope Gregory III held a synod against iconoclasm, and in favor of relics, starting on November 2, and celebrated by dedicating a new saint relic oratory in Old St Peter's, on November 1. Halloween fights iconoclasm. Pass it on. :)

Pope Gregory II was the first pope to oppose Emperor Leo the Isaurian/Syrian about iconoclasm. The emperor tried to get him murdered. When the pope died naturally, they elected a visiting Syrian priest, Pope Gregory III, for having given a great memorial homily.
