Sandy, your commentary is simply the best. It’s as if you truly speak Eagle? You’ve most certainly developed a symbiotic-like relationship with Jackie and Shadow, to the point it appears you can accurately read their minds. My love for this pair continues to grow with each update and with every day they continue to nurture their eggs and bond with each other. Shadow showed his love yesterday by sharing his meal and Jackie did so by demonstrating patience. They are such a great match, as all relationships require effort and they are obviously putting forth the effort. It’s a reminder to all of us too, to demonstrate and exchange loving acts and kindness with our own mates. In contrast, my heart still breaks so when I think about or see these now unviable eggs. If I could successfully wish them triplets, they would’ve been parents again weeks ago. Their mating session brings hope back (to all of us I think) that they’ll have another opportunity for eaglets. Thanks again Sandy, you and all of the volunteers at FOBBV are amazing! We couldn’t have this “Birds Eye” view into their lives, with it bringing such a heightened level of Eagle awareness and education without your efforts. God bless you.

Thank you Sandy and all of your volunteers for making this such an adventure and learning experience for all of us who have been watching... You have brought us into the lives of these two beautiful eagles and made us feel a part of their world.. If only more people would be as committed to each other (and their potential offspring) the way these two are - wow, the world would be such a better place.. It has brought together so many people both here in the US and around the world. It will be difficult to see an empty nest once they withdraw, but hopefully they will come back to visit their nest from time to time.

No, I'm not psychic, lol. It's been too long. They know when she laid the eggs & they know how long it takes for them to hatch. I didn't start watching at the beginning of all this, unfortunately. But, I've read enough of the comments to know that it's been too long. The eggs should have hatched a long time ago sadly 😥 They'll give up on them eventually. She'll give up first, I think I read. Then nature will take over and something will get the eggs.

Do eagles recognize their offspring as family & not feel threatened by them, after they leave the nest & vice versa.. do sub adults and/or adult eagles, recognize & respect their "parents"?.. Also, if an eagle losses a mate, do they go on to find another one? Also, how long does it take 4 them 2 realize the eggs are not viable?

The nest is in the National Forest and the habitat around the nest is closed by the USFS during nesting season to keep the eagles safe. Even if we could get permission to enter, Jackie and Shadow are still guarding their eggs. Bald Eagles are protected on the federal and state level, so it is illegal to disturb them or their nesting process. Climbing that tree would greatly disturb them, which of course we have no desire to do. Additionally, the nest is extremely difficult to access (no road, rugged terrain, 145-foot-tall tree with the nest near the top), especially in the winter, with snow as another barrier. Only a few arborists are qualified/experienced enough to ascend to the nest without damaging the tree or any of its habitats, and with their special skills, it can be difficult to get on their schedule and get them here. Most importantly, even if we knew what happened with the eggs, there isn’t really anything we could do about it. Sometimes we just have to let nature be nature and know that is best for all.

The eagles, just like other animals, such as our pets, seem to express emotional responses to the situations that happen in their lives. We have no way of knowing whether they are similar to our way of feeling emotions, but they do take on different behaviors in different situations. When the eggs in a previous year were invaded by ravens (after they had been left because they weren’t hatching), Shadow had a distinct reaction when he came back and saw the result. He stared at the eggshells in the empty nest for a long time, perhaps trying to come to terms with what was happening, perhaps feeling something akin to sadness. From what we have observed in several years of watching Jackie and Shadow, yes, they do have emotions.

Male and female eagles are fertile for life. Female eagles can lay a second clutch if the first is not viable, but its rare.

It's hard to give an exact amount of time that it will take for Jackie and Shadow to stop incubating. Eagles tend to over-incubate for several days/weeks, then slowly withdraw from incubation as they begin to take extended breaks

Eagles actually have a very poor sense of smell and as long as the eggs remain intact, there should not be much of an odor. Hope this helps!

From here, we will see what happens with the eggs. It is possible that a raven or other predator might get them. There is also a chance that they get buried into the nest if Jackie and Shadow start bringing sticks. Fiona (the flying squirrel who visits the nest at night) may also try to carry them away-she has tried in the past, but the eggs were way too big for her to pick up. Jackie is fertile Jan-March, so most likely we will have to wait until next Fall. Hope this helps!
