Kenny, I've watched 4 years of auto repair on UT and you are the first to break loose with a wrench before using your battery or air gun on the bolt/nut. Great piece of Info for some of these guys/gals, Thanks. Driver's Ed we had to step on brake when we started car the 70's, always thought it was to pull vacuum from engine to made it easier to start.

When I get one of those hub bearings seized in the knuckle, I back the bolts out just a few threads, then put a short impact socket on the head, and use the .401 air hammer socket adaptor and rattle them until the unit moves. I haven't been beaten using that method yet, and yes, I am in the rust belt. Way less time than the chisel or hammer methods.

@@daveklassen7052 I saw that, but at 0:25 he implied that he was going to replace both only because the truck owner requested it. I drive a ‘stick’ but regardless of what I drive I instinctively press the brake and clutch pedals down before I start the engine. I like the way the brake pedal stiffens slightly and pushes back against your foot as the vacuum for the brake booster kicks in. That way I know I’ve got some brake pressure in the system. I had a mechanic friend who when he got a stubborn shaft end in a hub he had a dedicated lump of round brass bar and a heavy engineer’s hammer. His method was - flat side of the bar end against the dimpled shaft end. Apply 2 very hard hits on the other end of the brass bar. He made a very strong point of insisting that it was 2 AND ONLY 2 hits. Basically ‘Shocking’ the splines like you would a particularly stubborn bolt. Like you Kenny, he was in the business very a long time so he had learnt a trick or two.

Castellated axle nut retainer and cotter pin safety device. If the axle nut comes off and the bearing fails it would be catastrophic. There is a YT video "short" on the internet showing, near Chatsworth Calif. on the Ronald Reagan 118 Freeway, just west of Topanga Canyon Boulevard, the Left front wheel coming off a pickup truck and the car beside him running right up onto it just like every open wheel racer's worst fear, the whole car shot up into the air about 10 feet ! When the Kia Soul drove up onto the rolling tire, it just took off for the moon. At one point the youtube short stops the video to show that the brake rotor is still bolted to the wheel, so that means the bearing itself broke away from the mount. If it had an axle stub extending thru the bearing from a CV joint, the joint housing would have kept the wheel near the proper location, short a lot of slack in the steering AS LONG AS THE AXLE NUT REMAINED IN PLACE. In that scenario if the axle nut holds, the tire would not be able to leave the wheel well and allow that very dangerous situation to happen. I cannot post the url for the video because googile will strike my comment. But I've given enough info to find it on googile. Be sure to look at the center of the tire to see the bright shiny brake rotor still attached to the wheel. ben/ michigan

In my experience, driving the car is the best way to isolate a bad wheel bearing. It’s not a bad idea to replace the bearings on both sides of the axle, as one could be right behind the other in terms of wear. That said, I would not bother replacing a known good bearing if you have problems replacing the bad one. Better to leave it alone in that case.
@blccf249

When my 2002 F150 4x4 had a noisy driver's side front bearing it would get louder when I turned right adding extra load and would be quieter when I turned left. I replaced the driver's side hub. About 10k miles later the truck started making the same bearing noise and was louder when turning right adding load and quieter when turning left. I thought the new bearing hub had failed. NOT! It was the bearing on the passenger side even though turning left added load and the bearing was quieter with the extra load. So, I suppose it depends on which bearing inside the hub is bad whether adding load to that side increases noise or decreases noise. Fooled me for a while.
