In this journey called “life”, you will not only meet good friends who are always there to support you, encourage you, and want the best for you. But also toxic friendships along the way who only perceive you as an opportunity for personal gain. One bad friendship will affect you physically, mentally and emotionally. So, how do we differentiate between a real friend and a "toxic" friend? Watch this video to find out. Also, if you get a chance, we did a video on Signs It's time To Let Go of A Best Friend here: • 6 Signs That it's Time...
Be sure to watch it too if you have a chance! The animation and points are really good!

seems like you're the common denominator, like you're the one looking for these people unknowingly. When your family is toxic you'll look for friends who make you fel the same, or at least theyre dramatic. When youre used to toxic people you'll get easily bored of the actual good people. it takes time to get used to feeling a certain way.

Yo guys should i drop my friends? Ever since quarantine started they have stopped calling to hang with them. They've been out when quarantine has been less strict and havent invited me. We still talk in discord but I feel left out bc I dont hang with them. Whenever they talk about plans and stuff, some of them kind of say it quietly bc I'm in the call and dont want me to hear it I guess. But I'm scared bc I dont want to be lonely in grad but with the pace of this, I feel like they are distancing themselves from me bc I'm not like them. After every call I always feel lonely bc they talk about the shit they did or what someone said in a group chat I'm not in and I'm just there.

I felt a lot more better 🤔 drop them and start making new friends that won't make you feel left out 🙃

@@daisyx1002 it was honestly one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made and I kept thinking to myself “maybe we can make it work again?” But I didn’t let it cloud my judgment. This may not sound healthy, but I kept thinking back to all the toxic aspects of our friendship, and it did help me to cut them off. I still think about them a lot and miss them everyday, but it’s getting better. Going back to look at their social media usually makes me feel worse though, so if you’re going to block them, do not look back. Don’t ever visit their page even if it’s just for nostalgic purposes, because then you’ll feel the urge to talk to them. And if they keep pestering and finding you to talk about it, just tell them straight up that you don’t want to be friends anymore and completely ghost them. They’ll get the message. Just don’t allow yourself to be manipulated again.

“Vent for hours” is a little much. A lot of us can’t handle that much negativity being dumped on us because of our own hardships, it’s just too much. That doesn’t make us toxic. I definitely try to hold space for my friends to vent and let their negative emotions out in a healthy way, but I have to take care of myself too. If all you do every time you talk to me is either amuse yourself or vent for hours and complain, then you are the toxic friend here. I need reciprocation that I can vent too without interruption, and that we also talk about positive things like hopes and dreams and things we’ve learned.

I was there 10 min ago. Some shit happened and i finally blocked them. Now I watched this video to strengthen my resolve. The worst thing is that I don't think I have any good people at school. They always make fun of me. But it's fine, I will be alone. I have been with these friends for 3 years. They slowly became toxic. I even tried to tell them not to but they say that they are just joking and I am being dramatic. Now when I responded calmly and gave comebacks they snapped and are picking from me. And one friend who pretends to care but talks behind back is telling to stop. When they abuse me, he didn't tell them to stop. Instead he was laughing and making fun of me. I have had enough. Perhaps I just don't deserve friends. I am short, have average looks, and am middle class. Though my academic ability is far higher than theirs and I didn't pick up on that they make fun of me for my height and say I will never get a gf and say I have small pp. Yup that's the hell I was living in

I'm missing two important elements here: 1. They are *present* when you need them and actually care about you. This sort of made an appearance but just in passing, while this is really a key point. I had multiple "friends" in the past who seemed to not care much when I needed them or counted on their support, even though they more or less fit the other points here, often covering it with layers of elegant-sounding, high-horse phrases. 2. They do not just turn on you. This may seem obvious, but this happens more often than I had ever expected, and have had two traumatic situations in the last year alone when someone I considered a rather close friend just completely turned against me with no second chances - in both cases they lost it after I got slightly upset over them defending something awful. It's incredibly toxic and those are the people who usually have built up an entire ideology to "prove" that the whole escalating situation was somehow your fault when you thought it was just a disagreement.

The 2nd point... I relate to that a lot. My best friend was extremely toxic to me for no apparent reason, and that put me thru major depression for such a long time, even affecting my academic performance... But after a year he finally owned up to his mistakes and apologized to me and explained why he did that to me. If only he opened up to me a little bit earlier... But yeah at least we're on good terms now, altho the past really still hurts bcoz it was almost a traumatizing experience for me

That I actually feel better this way. I decided to let go and pretend as if we're just normal friends and nothing special happened between us. It's hard at first, but I needed to do this for myself. I was hurting, but as I let go, I'm finally feeling so much better. I'm happier on my own, and idk if this counts as sth unfortunate or not. Wow I almost cried typing this but honestly, I don't miss him at all. That past experience is just too traumatizing for me that I don't wish to go back to how close we were anymore. Its insane how many people can disguise themselves as being "friends." My problem was that I was too trustworthy and I thought I got along with everyone. Looking back I feel crappy for not being more empathetic towards people I couldn't understand because they could have been real ride or die people..at that time I was an angry person and I knew I took it out on the wrong people and in rude or harsh ways. I surrounded myself with people that weren't any better than I was and thought I couldn't and wouldn't be able to attract people with any real great energy. Letting go of people that were just using me for whatever reasons were very smart decisions. You don't think so at first because you thought those years hanging out and getting to know that person or people mattered, but in the end it didn't. If you weren't beneficial to them in some way they would drop you. Everyone stay positive and keep those gems who are friends as close to you as possible. Now we need it more than ever due to this virus. Be careful and safe everyone.

Some people here are worried that they're the toxic friend. But I would like to offer some peace of mind to all of you. If you're worried about being a toxic friend, you are probably not a toxic friend. Toxic people don't care. They don't care if they hurt anyone, they're not the ones worried about being the toxic friend. But those who are actually good friends will worry and they will wonder if they're bad and how they can improve. C.S. He's really sensitive because his insecurities leave him feeling people are disrespecting him and he gets angry and judgemental. He doesn't listen, but he's often honest about his opinion about you even if it's bad. I don't feel safe, respected or valued in the friendship but I can't tell if that's my own insecurities and I should be responsible for how my actions leave him feeling. We've been trying to clean it up but so far it's mostly just me listening to him and he can't seem to hear my side. He also said our friends encourage me to my face but say things behind my back which is making me feel bad. Literally the only person I have ever met in this life who fits the bill of "good friend" is my mother... Expecting all those behaviors from some rando you meet and who can drift in or out of your life at any moment might be too much to expect, I think. Most of us try to be the "good friend", but it gets harder when we've got our own shit going on. I don't blame people for being occasionally toxic, we all gotta look out for ourselves, sometimes. That said, there are some out there who are just constantly toxic, due to personality disorders etc., and not worth your time.

For number one you can be there for friends, but you also have to know when to look after your own mental health. You can't always be there for others problems and worries, especially if it's hurting you. Number two, it is important to no judge your friend and supports them for who they are, unless they are actively harming people around them by their behaviours and beliefs. Number four is the same as number one, you can't always be there for others mental health, you can't always be there to support and encourage them if it means your mental health is on the line and they start to expect you to always be there for it. As long as you try and direct them to someone who can help and listen and know when its really serious, it's okay to sometimes back off to deal with your own problems.

You can also try giving them another chance, maybe they’re a new person or they’ll change for the better, but you’re not obligated to be that person’s friend after they’ve hurt you time and again. I try to be a good friend, maybe sometimes I act like a toxic friend inside of me , cause I hide my thoughts in that moment to that person , and sometimes if that person did something that gives me anxiety or I started to worried about something too much I just try to avoid that person a little bit , still if he or she needs help I'll try my best to support them cause nobody deserve to be sad and felt that they are not important.

Check in on your friends from time to time, no harm in doing so. Even if they dont reach out to you, they may be having a hard time. I rarely Express my emotions to the people around me (on purpose at least) so it feels good when a friend or two reaches out to me and lets me know that they're here for me. It's also a good feeling when you yourself send a quick message to your close friends telling them the same.

I feel like this encourages ENABLERS rather than actual friends. And that's one of the bigger issues of friendships today. We associate ourselves with enablers rather than true friends because we associate criticism and harsh truths from our friends with toxicity since you can easily hide behind the "they just dont accept me for who I am" shtick. Also toxic and manipulative friends hide exactly behind the positive traits you numbered. They will easily seem as the biggest friends ever since they can fake empathy, patience, etc., while the friend who actually cares for you and tells you the harsh truth will be pushed away because he's going to get zoned out as being "toxic". This video is way too naive for this channel. Real friends and real empathy comes from harsh truths, and not from blind kindness and acceptance.

That's why they mentioned the Toxic Friend is a Backstabber and couldn't practice what they preach. I had a friend who did that with all the positive traits in place, but also had all the negative traits and the big one was "They weren't responsible." She told me to not date slime bags and guessed what.....SHE MARRIED THE FIRST ASSHOLE WHO not only fucked her sideways but accused me of sleeping with his wife, convinced her mother I was a prostitute, and has been cheating on her this whole time. She also had personal red flags where she didn't give a fuck about me. And guess who got the blame from one comment going," You know you're husband is a sleez bag right?" Me. Thank God her mom gave me the final nail in the coffin, because that bs happened for 15 years. And Showed me my own mother had my Back the whole time.....like holy hell. Kicking her out of my life, was the best Birthday Gift I ever gave myself. After that I had a White Russian and a facial because my Mom, a true friend and my Partner went ......" Girl You Earned it." Have you ever get to be the least favourite in a friends group and it doesnt matter if you're gone... Have you change after your friend change their self....? People will always notice the in your attitude towards them. But they will never notice its their behavior which made you change.. No matter how many times a snake sheds its skin, it will always be a snake. Remember that before allowing people back to your life. Fake friends are like shadows. Always near you at your brightest moment, but nowhere to be seen at your darkest hour. True friends are like stars, you dont always see them but they are always there. Or the easier way.. Fake friends are like shadows, they follow you in the sun but leave you in the dark A true friend cares about whats going on in your life. A fake friend will make their problems sound bigger. Cut heals, our friendship wont. The only people who are mad at you for speaking the truth are those people who are living a lie. Letting toxic people go is not an act of cruelty its an act of self-care Maybe the weight you need to lose isnt on your body Letting go of toxic people in your life is a big step in loving yourself. It sickens me that there are people who can make up as much as lies about someone and make them self look so innocent and they destroy someones reputation all because they are jealous and pathetic and so many people believe them without finding the truth. Simplify your life by clearing out toxic friends and habits that you take nowhere. Id rather have an enemy who admits they hate me, instead of a friend who secretly put me down. The only way to win with a toxic person is not to play. The attitude you pose is greatly influenced by the link of friends you bookmark. Good friends, good attitude. Best friends, best attitude. Guess what for toxic friends.. Real friends they accept the way you are Toxic friends they try to control you and change you. Ur allowed to leave toxic people behind Ur allowed to end friendships that hurt more than they help. If you lose a friend beacause youre honest, it wasnt a good friend. It is not my role to expose the fake people. In due time, they will expose themselves for who they really are. Simplify your life, simplify your mind, simplify your surroundings. Real friends know the importance of alone time Toxic friends they try to take up alot of your times. Whatever you do, dont run back to what broke you. Real friends know everyones has a diffrent types of friends and wont judge Toxic friends they dont like your other friends. Real friends are empathetic Toxic friends are hurtful Real friends enjoy the time of discussion. Toxic friends they insist on winning over. Even if the real friends is busy, they still here for you, unlike the toxic friends.. Real friends call you simply beacause they miss you. Toxic friends only find you when they need your help. Real friends eagerly suggest how to celebrate your success. Toxic friends get jealous of your achievement. Real friends know when to listen and when continue. Toxic friends they talk way more than they listen. Real friends they respect you and themselves. Toxic friends they lose their temper easily. Feel free to send this to someone or repost this 😌

Add to that bending the truth about things we had agreed on...I had to pull the plug when I myself am giving 100% with honest communication about hurt feelings and discussion from a place of love and trying to understand them. Not toxic, but also not able to meet basic friendship requirements. If that feels like pressure, they have some inner reflection and inner work to do, and I hope they take this as an opportunity to do so for their own relationships. I have this one friend, and when I first met her online 2 years ago we would always make the effort to talk to each other, and we were talking everyday flirting here and there and it was all going fine, we met up 2 months later to the park and she was constantly responding with “awesome”, “nice” and maybe a little bit of giggling but they were really generic answers and I remember she raised her voice at me saying ,”alright” when I told her let’s climb this statue at the park because I thought it would be fun, but she kept telling me no and I kept persisting to reassure her it was fine since adults and kids climbed them too ,not to force her, and when she said alright I stopped and I thought to myself ,”oh man why did I keep telling her, I was wrong”, one thing that I find ridiculous is to this day me and her sister don’t talk to Each other or just say a Simple hello, she didn’t even introduce me to her sister when we went to the park because her sister was walking with us, and it was very awkward, after the park she didn’t send many messages anymore her Texts were really cookie cutter type of responses , and I I remember that she didn’t text me at all for a week until Sunday that week asking me for help where her room number was for testing, and I thought to myself ,”wow she doesn’t talk to me all week but is only asking for help” then we meet up for a test at school, and me and her haven’t really texted as much and me her are talking and as I’m talking she pull out her phone and starts reading this long-ass message on her phone and I could tell she wasn’t paying attention to me anymore, and so I stop talking and she just keeps reading that message and I take a peak and she responded to that message with almost the same Length as what she was reading, and It hurt so much but I tell myself well no one’s flirted with me or a girl has talked to me like this before (I was abused and neglected for the majority of my childhood, and I get really attached to people so maybe that has something to do with this) and so I didn’t want to break it off thinking I was overreacting, months go by and it’s the same thing she doesn’t go out of her way to text me anymore and only does if she ask for help and sometimes responds back to me when I send her a message, she told me she doesn’t have her phone on the weekends, but then she tells me on of hers friends invited her to the movies on Saturday, and I’m sitting there thinking ,”WTF?! I thought you said you didn’t have it on those days” and then back before this whole mess I confessed to her and she said her “parents don’t let her date”, and she’s “never dated anyone” , I told her I’ll wait and she said that’s so sweet I’ll wait too, and we’ll back in September she told me she like this girl and we essentially became “normal friends” we used to walk together after 7th period, but then she started leaving me behind for the girl she liked, and left me as the guy on the side and I thought “okay it’s not a big deal it hurts but I’ve never really had friends so maybe this is normal to feel “ and later she tells me stories of how she dated one of her friends before to spite another girl, and before that she dated a guy that had similar personality like her, she says “the old me” and brags how she used to be rude to others and disobeyed her parents and I’m thinking to myself ,” what the hell have I gotten myself into” (I really need someone to reply to This comment, and give me validation to delete her number and just stop talking to her at school and I really want someone to tell me it’s okay to cut her off)

Did you delete her number? She sounds like she could be bad news. It has taken me years to realise that for a true friendship to happen - both people need to be kind of humble and kind of mature. When one or both parties of a friendship are not grounded in reality / fairness - that can be a recipe for disaster. The problem with having had a bad childhood is that we often come to expect less for ourselves, we often don't stand up for ourselves like we could and should do, and we often put up with a bad deal from friends and family. You sound like a sensible / grounded person to me, and I hope you're doing well today.

Recently, I had a friend who was having an argument with someone we didn't know, and ended up messaging us about it (not something I'd do, what if it was sensitive to that person?) Anyway, I agreed with both sides and explained why. She was pissed that I didn't accept her opinion, and that I had a brain that differs from hers. When I eventually asked her not to swear at me (I make it a point to not swear during stuff like this to show that I'm not being aggressive in my opinion), and she basically told me that she can speak to me however she wanted and that my opinion didn't matter. It took a few seconds for me to react but I basically said to her that she's lost. She thought I meant the argument. I meant she'd lost me as a friend. 4 years of friendship gone because she can't accept that other people have different opinions to her. This was second week of quarantine. I'm glad this didn't happen in person as I don't think I would've been able to handle it. I know I say and do things that I regret often, but if I get shown even and ounce of friendship I hold that very close to my heart. If she's reading this, yes, I miss you, but only through work do I know now that people shouldn't speak to others that way, otherwise I would have taken it. I am not the person I was 2 years ago, it's time to act like you're 20, not 14.

I was that toxic friend. I have BPD. I am working through it. I have always been the friend to cut people off when they’re telling me something that has hurt them or is hurting them. I usually interrupted with a, “omg! I know how you feel! One time I had a boyfriend and he…..”. I was too caught up with my own trauma to be there for anyone else’s. I have been a selfish friend, I have pushed people to be impulsive and do stupid stuff (like me), I have been the cold friend that told them to dry their eyes, brush off, come drink with me, and get back in the game when they weren’t ready. I was that way with my kids too …. When they would come to crying, I would ask them “Are you bleeding? Is anything broken? Then stop being a cry baby and stop crying and shake it off.”. I thought I was making them tough… I realize now that I taught them to push trauma away, repress, and keep going like nothing’s wrong… that’s how most kids in the 80s-90s were taught to be… I was. I went through volatile relationships, Substance Use, suicide attempts, self harm, etc etc etc… I see my son walking the same path I chose. Listen to your kids and let them express emotion, show them they matter, and assist them with regulating emotions… I only called friends when I needed them and the list goes on and on. Today, I am in long term recovery from BPD, PTSD, SUD…I still struggle with depression. I have 2 friends (since high school) well 1 is unavailable most the time… which I truly understand… I always call her (she hasn’t called me in 2 years) because she realized I was toxic probably… if that’s what she needs to do then I get it. She was an awesome friend though…she was there when I lost my dad 2 years ago… But she seems to not believe me when I tell her I haven’t relapsed… bc so many times when I was getting high, I was never honest about it…but it still hurts my feelings… I know it’s my fault bc I ruined that trust and friendship… I miss her and I wish she was around to see how much I’ve changed. One thing, I would NEVER be posting this in the past… lol. Don’t take those friends for granted and definitely don’t abuse them… those friends don’t come along but once in a lifetime I think.

My ex best friend was so toxic and told me I am the bad friend when she left me. I was at my lowest at that point and wasn't able to fake my happiness anymore like she expected me too. She accused me of having an attitude and being rude to her when I had a blank face because I tried not to cry. We have the same best friend until now and she's still my best friend. At a party of another friend we were in the same car but I was at the front and they were in the back. They talked about something but they never talked to me. I felt like they left me out but now I understood that I could've just said something and they were just talking. I was really hurt, mostly because of overthinking about it and decided to not bother them anymore (because they apparently didn't want to speak to me, oof they probably did) and I blocked both of them after the party. The toxic one started to accuse of everything I've been doing "wrong" to her and told me I'm selfish to just leave her and I just used her and since then never spoke a word to me again. Well, it was like you have blah blah blah time to talk to me. If you don't, I won't talk to you ever again. I was too scared because every time we saw each other she looked like she wanted to kill me. But after two weeks or so I finally found the courage to ask her if we can talk about it the next day (it was after school and I didn't have much time) The next day she hid from me and was really annoyed when I wanted to talk to her even though she told me we could. But I talked to her and really tried to understand what she wants to say and asked questions. But she answered none of them and just screamed at me and told me that I messed everything up. Since then we actually never talked again and I blamed everything on myself. Our other best friend tried to convince her to talk to me but she refused and then she stopped asking her for the sake of their friendship. While the toxic friend blamed everything on me my real best friend asked me why I did this, tried to calmly solve the problem and actually wanted to know what was wrong that I thought she didn't like me anymore. She really tried to understand me and after I calmed down she tried to explain that she really likes me but it hurts her when I accuse her of not liking me even though she's done nothing wrong. And she's right. She's never done anything wrong. I was just scared. I mean, I still think she likes my ex best friend better but at least I can trust her and she is real. my ex best friend is just her better friend. They've known each other for a really long time. When we were all friends I often felt I was interfering with their friendship so I felt bad but luckily I'm not friends with both of them anymore.

I had a toxic friend. He constantly compared me to one of my best friends, constantly denied it, and would always make fun of me for being a furry. He's one of the reasons I have issues talking to people and why I most likely have social anxiety. That's just the stuff I can think of off the top of my head.

I have been getting very anxiety filled about myself lately, and have been searching things to see if I’ll fit in a category.. but almost every time I end up watching one of your videos. the calming voiceover and judgeless examples.. it relaxes me every time. and I thank you, so much, for being a channel I can rely on when I think I might need to find advice that I can’t get irl.

I have an old friend that backstabbed me for some small thing I didn't do, and they put me in a state of depression. Although, I got through just fine.

Sounds like there's a mismatch. That could be toxic when you're trying to be a good friend to someone who's toxic. It keeps you stuck.

I’ve always worried about how everyone at my school has so many “friends”, but I have few. Then, one of my friends said “Would you rather have a ton of people listen to you, but not really care, or would you rather have a few people who have your back no matter what?” and right then I realized that with my friends and family, I have one of the strongest support systems of anyone I know. I might not be “rich” when it comes to acquaintances, but I sure have an impenetrable fortress surrounding me.

I let a toxic friend go today and most of these applied to her. I think I did the right thing. She was only there for me when it was convenient to her, she is indifferent when I express my feelings, she flips the blame around to me when I point out how she neglects our friendship and takes more than she gives. She apologizes but doesn't change. Acting like a great friend only between romantic relationships. Once she's in one, they are her number one priority and I'm just a nuisance. It feels good to be done and severing a toxic tie. Thank you for the validation.
