I use this concept for vacations. People constantly ask how I can afford to travel. I say I treat my vaca budget like any other bill.

My mother did this for vacations and Christmas presents. Smart thinking!

1. Treat savings account like a bill 2. Cancel subscriptions not needed 3. Round up purchases and save the difference 4. Save money you would have spent on impulsive purchases

I do mock shopping. I look for things that I 'might' want to have and make a note of the costs. Instead of putting it in a cart to avoid pesky reminder emails, I put it on my wish list. For the items I decide against buying I put that amount into savings.

This is extreme, but people I have known have used these. Cash your paycheck at the bank and get all one dollar bills . If you have a few dollars extra buy a money order, make it out to yourself, rent a safe deposit box at a bank and put that money order and any others into the box.. Thanks, Walt and Chrissy.

It does seem extreme but whatever it takes. It works for them therefore, it's a great idea.

Love all of your ideas especially about cancelling a subscription and pay the amount to to your savings. I'm getting back to rounding down my checking account Fridays. I look at the balance, the amount in the 1s place and the change is transferred to my savings. Fir example Friday balance $543.50...I will transfer the $3.50 to my savings. Of course, while keeping my out of the negative when other transactions clear the account.
